Photo of young boy registered as errand boy at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria

Imam Imam who is the spokesperson of Sokoto state governor, shared this photo on his Facebook page. According to him, the management of ABU Zaria has now accepted 'child labour' by registering children to run errands within its premises.

We used to call them 'any work' back in UNILAG. But is there anything wrong with the School management registering them? In western world, youngsters who want to, can start working at 16.

are they not supposed to be school too at their age, when they are employed to run errands in the university, what time will they go to their own school, night time??? God have mercies.

So long as they're not exploited or abused, it's ok, cos the fact is, they do more tedious work outside the campus without a penny. The registration is justified,I think, for their safety.

Does this boy look 16 to you? Why do we refer to western world when it suits us? Do the so called 16 year old western boys work at the detriment of schooling? Do they abandon school to fetch water for others during school hours? Abu as a citadel of learning should know better, we know Nigeria, we know how to turn a blind eye to all these, but registering them? Does!

I don't see anything wrong with this. The sch registered/documented them so they don't run away with students' properties. Instead of them running around playing football after sch and constituting a nuisance, they can come and do menial works and get paid to help their parents make little cash. It's not like they are forced to. They gladly do these little running arounds for a fee.

There should be a time frame were these boys are allowed to work, maybe 1pm -6pm daily except weekends. To ensure they go to school and get home early.Besides these boys need the money to care fot themselves and family.

In my days in UNN,they go door to door asking to fetch water for us and we pay. Some of them use this money to buy sch books and sandals and all that.
