FG denies asking Nigerian Athletes to buy their tickets to Rio 2016

Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, has released a statement denying claims that they asked the Nigerian Athletic contingent to Rio 2016 Olympics to purchase their tickets themselves. Read the statement from Dalung after the cut...

WE DID NOT ASK ATHLETES TO BUY TICKETS TO RIO
The Ministry of Youth and Sports Development says it did not direct foreign based athletes going to the Olympic Games in Rio to buy their own air tickets. The Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon Dalung said this in a statement following a purported mail asking athletes to buy their tickets to the Olympics and which was said to have originated from the Ministry. Barrister Dalung stated that the Director, High Performance Angie Taylor has been saddled with the responsibility of arranging for the flights and movement of the foreign based athletes to and from Rio. "We did not write any mail asking athletes to pay their way to Rio. As the overseers of sports in the country, it is our duty to take care of all our athletes. The letter did not come from us and we will investigate the writer of that letter. It does not represent our stand concerning the movement of athletes to Rio and the writer or anybody asking athletes to buy their tickets to Rio will be investigated. We ask Nigerians and athletes in particular to disregard the mail" Dalung said. The minister however regretted the embarrassment caused by the letter and asked athletes to remain focused on their build-up to the Rio games.

  15. FG is not serious about sports. So let us not pretend about this. The Olympics is only days away , yet they have not released the supposed funds for preparation. And they expect the Athletes to perform magic and bring back medals. Now the so called journalists are silent . After the Olympics, they would bring out there so called articles to critic the performance of the Athletes.

  40. We are so dumb in this country! No wonder we are yet to get things right. Ok, I received a mail from my 'bankers' saying that my BVN is not valid that I should go to the nearest branch and sort it out or call... This kind of mail could come from anybody. I have read the purported mail over and over and come to the conclusion that it is either 419 or a prankster.

  52. What a disgraceful catastrophe! Sorry but I believe the athletes were told to pay their own way. Some months ago, this same Minister Dalung complained that monies meant for the Rio-bound athletes had gone missing. As usual, nothing was done. So you see, this is BLATANT CORRUPTION at its peak! How many years has Nigeria had to prepare for Rio 2016? It is not a good idea to send monies to the gofundme pages, the athletes should not expect their fellow Nigerian to pay them monies that should otherwise come from their government (taxes) via the Ministry of Sports. The athletes can not expect their fellow right thinking citizens to aid and abet this evil corruption by doing the government's job for them. One hopes that Dalung & Co will do right by all the Rio Olympiads. How can Nigeria win gold medals when the athletes have to deal with these kinds of issues?

    ReplyDelete
  53. What is wrong with Nigeria. Bloody kleptomaniacs!!! Athletes need to be careful cos GoFundMe is not the answer. The athletes must call their bluff. No tickets then plenty of lawsuits to come.

  54. I believe the minister- most people did not read the email before commenting- it didn't look like something an official would write and it is so full of spelling errors and grammatical mistakes

    ReplyDelete
  55. @ anonymous 8.30pm, grammatical errors is no proof that it did not come from the ministry. Have you not come across the blunders coming from even people in the presidency? abegi!

  56. We blame the PDP govt for writing this letter ,subsequently we have invited the EFCC to investigate this act of lawlessness and bring them to book...just assisting them to deceive us more mtcheweeee

    ReplyDelete
  57. It's a major embarrassment already even if the directive didn't come from U... I only wonder why the letter had to emanate in the first place!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lie lie! Keep on disgracing yourselves. Thank God you were exposed. Thank God for Linda's blog. It has actually stopped a lot of evil from happening and has exposed the ones that have already happened.
