Nigerians react to a tweet from Gov Obiano which refered to his newly appointed commissioner as a 'young & sound boy'

Anambra State Governor, Mr Willie Obiano has appointed a 30-yr-old man named Mark Okoye as a commissioner in his government. Mark was yesterday confirmed as the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning & Budget Development by the Anambra State House of Assembly and is regarded as the youngest commissioner in Nigeria.

Now a tweet from Gov Obiano's official twitter account that links to a statement on a website announcing the appointment - described Mark as a '30-yr-old young and sound boy'. The term 'boy' attracted the attention of twitter users who found it condescending. See their reactions after the cut.

  6. He made a great move by appointing a sound mind as a commissioner but the boy tag is not so befitting for an honourable commissioner.

  17. Oh please, they should all take a chill pill, the man has done a cool thing to appoint a really young person for that sensitive position they should look and leverage on the bright side rather than be sentimental... Boy or man the guy still one of the youngest commissioners in nigeria ever.

  24. A 30 yr old man is not a boy. In Hausa land a 30 year old boy has up 10 ten children. please Sir that boy given to a man of 30 years is not acceptable. Because a family that has a 30 year old boy, the person is no longer a boy please. If you can convince us that "BOY' is his nick name with good explanation. It is different. So that his experience will not be like little boy experience. Because whatever you call your dog, that is what the dog will answer. A MAN OF 30 YEARS IS NO LONGER A BOY. PLEASE CORRECT THAT IMPRESSION.

  29. Obiano is one of the best governors in Nigeria at the moment; The first governor to start stone-free rice production in Nigeria.

We all have native languages et all. I am not trying to defend him but if you translate the Pidgin English of somebody's boy or right-hand man then he would be your 'boy-boy' no matter how old he is and that is how we really speak in Nigeria because we are not British or American.

I do not know Obiano but nobody is perfect... Leave him alone!!! Why not pick on governors who not producing food items for the masses to buy and eat e.g tomatoes?

  34. Nigerians are so easily distracted. Instead of calling on other Governors to do same, they are busy interpreting English language. If they call YOU today and offer you the position on the condition that you will be referred to as boy or girl will you accept or deny it?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I really don't think he meant any harm or tried to belittle the commissioner. I believe it's an honest mistake & we really don't need to rub it in! Kudos for the appointment sir!

  36. He's a boy relative to the governor like it or not. Nigerian kids gat no respeck for elders .
