Photo: RRS saves sickler from committing suicide after he lost his mother's N6k and his phone

Operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad today rescued a 17yr old boy named Lanre pictured above from jumping into Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge. A RRS rider on regular patrol of Third Mainland Bridge was notified by a mechanic of a teenager standing on the bridge and looking into the Lagoon. The RRS rider moved towards Lanre who was already standing on the crash barrier and looking into the lagoon.

The RRS official gently held Lanre by the legs and moved him away from the edge of the bridge. He was taken to RRS headquarters where he was counseled. When asked what made him to want to dive into the Lagoon, Lanre said he was frustrated after he lost N6,000 and a phone to some area boys in Lagos Island. He said his mother had given him N6, 000 to get food stuffs at Ita Faaji Market when some area boys accosted him and collected his phone and the money from him.
“I felt depressed after losing the N6, 000:00 and phone to the five boys who waylaid me on my way to the market. I couldn’t summon the courage to go back home to confront my mum that I lost the money she gave me to purchase food stuffs at Ita Faaji. I don’t know those guys and I have never seen them before” he said
Lanre’s mother who was immediately invited, said that she has been looking for him for couple of hours after sending him on errand.
“I have searched everywhere, his friends’ and the entire neighbourhood. I was shocked to learn that he has attempted suicide by jumping into the Lagoon. He has just finished his secondary school. He went to Lagos City College. I don’t know why he wanted to commit suicide. He is a sickler but he has never been admitted in a hospital before. He is healthy. If I didn’t tell you, you won’t know. He is athletic and doing just fine. His father has traveled overseas and re-married. We are doing fine and okay with our lives. If he had returned home to tell me what happened, the worst I could have done was to slap him and threatened him to return my money for me. I know I have been an exceptional mother to the four of them. I have never allowed them to miss their father and they are doing quite well in their studies” she said

  6. Thank God for prompt intervention

The woman must be a very strict parent for the child to contemplate suicide instead of facing his mum

I think some parents need to loosen up a bit

  8. Guess she is a terror. For your kid to fear you & would rather commit suicide than face your wrath really says a lot about how in humane & formidable she is.

  10. Mother's words doesn't add up,for your 17yr old to be on the verge of attempting suicide because he was robed off your 6k speaks volumes about your parenting skills. She must be one harsh mum.

    1. You are the only person who have made sense so far. The mother might not be as strict as you all think. He felt depressed because he couldn't forgive himself for not being able to protect what was handed him esp. In this harsh economic situation. As a sickler, I've contemplated suicide more often than not. Our self worth is heavily battered. We feel like a burden to our loved ones and d world at large. Please everyone, continue to pray for us

    2. @she: my Prayers are with you! I cried after reading your comment. May God intervene in your life's situation now in Jesus name, Amen!! God will keep u and establish you beyond your aspirations in life!

    3. It is well with you. You're a warrior, sickle cell doesn't mean you should be depressed. Be thankful, I'm also a sickle cell patient, I'm always grateful to God for the gift of life. Never see yourself as a burden, always trust God for the best. I know most sicklers battle with depression but it can be overcomed with positive thoughts and confessions. You also need supportive friends and families who understand your plight, never believe the lies of the devil.

    1. The mom is not a beast, she is a disciplinarian, imagine having to take care of four children all alone. She has to be sonewhat strict with them less they go astray..
I remember loosing 4thousand as a child, I hid under the bed for well over 6 hours while my parents had been in serious distress, I actually tot of killing myself cause I knew my parents wont take it likely..
I came out in the midnight during prayers for finding me, and no, they didnt beat me and they are not beasts, they just never took any form of indiscipline, carelessness inclusive.
      .. ... .
