NBC urges DSTV not to air transgender series, 'I am Jazz'

The National Broadcasting Commission has urged Multichoice, the parent company of DSTV, not to air a programme titled "I am Jazz" which is set to air on TLC channel soon. In a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs of the NBC, Mr. Awwalu Salihu, the commission explained that the programme is about a transgender child.

The NBC said the programme is capable of corrupting the youths as it is also at variance with Nigerian law which prohibits homesexuality. The statement added,

"The attentions of the NBC has been drawn to the concern raised by some members of the public about some alleged plans by the TLC Channel on DSTV to begin airing a programme, I am Jazz, which is about a transgender child. "The commission has drawn the attention of the service provider to this concern and has received firm assurances that it will investigate and if it concerns that thr programme is indeed promoting undesirable ideas that will offend the Nigerian public."
The show follows the life and family of Jazz Jennings, 14, who was born male and transitioned into a girl.

  10. The biggest tool for manipulation has become the television via entertainment. Almost every show these days broaches the topic of homosexuality. I do not have a problem with people being gay, far from it. If you want to be gay be gay but the media should stop subtly implanting the idea in people's head via agents of manipulation. Let it be a person's choice not what is impressed on them as the right or wrong thing.

    1. Do you think Kids aren't smart enough to override the perennial control features. Most kids are even more technologically advanced than their parents. This is a show aimed at kids. They can leave I am Cait because he is an adult but the rate at which CARTOONS are showing homosexuality is alarming Naruto, the Simpsons and so on. This are aimed at kids. Yes as adults we can make our informed choice but not children

Am very sure, DSTV can not try this in Mugabe's country who outrightly his against such.
NBC, welldone yo have quickly come to rescue our society and many thanks for social media who shouted. NBC, what we need is follow up, is not enough to just issue instructions, you should have enough personnel to drive your policy statement.
    LIB.....welldone..

  24. Is NBC just waking up from sleep?the 1st season of 'I am Cait' is almost coming to an end!thats when they should have spoken up.Anyways it's never too late so let's hope that this complaint makes a difference!

  26. It's not for the NBC to tell DSTV what to air or not, this is not a Federal or State broadcasting station that you can direct. DSTV content is based on what they think will keep them in business, what their viewers will subscribe to and not an NTA that government pays their salaries

  37. omg thank God when i switched from E! to TLC because of the less gay stuffs i was dissapointed when i saw this stupid series i am jazz. this is corrupting young children we cant turn on any station without them shoving this gay nonsense down our throats. it affects children. if a young boy loves to dance ballerina, he feels he has to be gay to blend in, if he likes to design clothes he is supposed to be gay or be a hair stylist or a make up artist. it is sickning enough of this lgbt shit.

  54. I think Multichoice or DSTV as it is popularly called is begining to bite more than it can chew, perhaps I would say they are begining to challenge our governance to its face. First, their services are mischieviously packaged to rip off Nigerians, as if that wasn't enough, they went ahead to astronomically hike up their suscription prices with blunt disregard to the complaints of Nigerians using their service. Government intervention on that issue left alot to be desired- Well that was the GEJ's corrupt government, where anyone could be bought over (from GEJ down to the lowest man in his government). The indifference of the previous administration to the malignities metted out to Nigerians by DSTV has made the organisation see our governance as nothing but weak, and now they're about to graduate to a new level of blantantly disregarding our laws which frowns at any media publicization of homosexuality. This is disrespect and disregards taken to another level. It is now time to awaken this parasite of company to the new reality of Nigeria, that it's no longer business as usual. They'd better aligned to our laws or GET OUT! Any thing othyer than this is a direct pass of vote of no confidence on this administration like its predicessor.

  55. LMAO! This is how it starts people. Not only are they policing your morality, they are tell you that you are stupid. Next thing Nigeria will be like Saudi Arabia. Please we don't accept homosexuality here but it doesn't mean my son would want to become a girl because he saw it on tv. Educate yourself and allow your kids to learn that such things do exist in this world.

  56. If it ll corrupt us d more pls dont show it
