Ikorodu robbery suspects sue IGP; say they were forced to make false statements

The four armed robbery suspects arrested in July in connection with the Ikorodu Bank robbery which occurred on June 24th, have dragged the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase before a Federal High Court in Lagos over claims that they were forced to confess to being part of an 18-man armed robbery gang that attacked the banks.

The four men were paraded before newsmen on July 6th where they confessed to being involved in the robbery attack. The court paper which has been filed before Justice Mohammed Yunusa through their lawyer, A Akanbi, states that they made confessional statement to newsmen under duress.

He argued that the police had no right to parade the suspects to be interviewed by the press unless such a suspect wishes to give interview after the matter has been charged to a court of competent jurisdiction.

Their counsel also alleges that the police have denied him and the family members of the suspects access to see them since their arrest
"The applicants’ counsel were not allowed to see the applicants even to have a brief interview when they visited the defendants on July 15, 2015. The applicants’ constitutional rights under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution are at stake because the defendants have already taken a bias position by denying the applicants’ family or their counsel their right of visiting them in police custody. It will be in the interest of justice if the applicants are brought before this honorable court so that the court can ascertain whether the applicants are still alive. It will be in the interest of justice if the applicants can be charged by the defendants to court since they have already spent over 24 hours in custody and failure to do this will amount to usurpation of the constitutional powers of the judiciary.”the court paper states

    1. The police is one of the most pathetic institution in this country. Has anyone ever seen police men actually investigating? They only go to d homes of innocent men to search. They will rather beat suspects to stupor then force them to sign to a confessional statements and d only evidence they will hv in court is d statement and a lying IPO! God help us, criminals are on d loose everywhere.

  9. I hate the way the Nigerian police treats people even when they haven't been proven guilty. They brutalize, detain,& gives you a general feeling of being a criminal even if you're innocent. They determine what you should be through their body language.
These guys may be saying the truth coz its been their way.

  15. If second class citizens like this could be subjected to confession under duress(as they alleged), our looters should equally be subjected to same duress to release our money abeg. Linda take note.

    1. What d heck do u mean by second class citizens? Why should a citizen of a country be considered second class in his or her own country? They may belong to d middle class cos they ain't rich, but they r in no way second class citizens!

  22. It will serve as a deterrent to other police quarters and to make proper investigation before any arrest. Many innocent lives are in police custody languishing without trial.

  23. Good for the robbery suspects to be charged to court and judged by incorruptable judges based on substantial evidences available. This is the rule of law. However, Nigerians must understand that adhering to rule of law or democratic governance is not a license for indiscipline. Today when matters of dealing with indiscipline and lawlessness are brought up U hear many Nigerians saying "we are in a democracy" as if democracy is a license for indiscipline or lawlessness. This mindset must be corrected.

  26. I can authoritatively say it that the guy in pink shirt is a confirmed member of the gang cos he was seen days ahead of the scene begging for money while spying on the area with an excuse that he needed money for T-fare to Ijebu-ode.
He was almost arrested the following day before he escaped and they eventually came for their stupendous act.
    They must rot in jail.

  27. I knew it,their confession didn't sound right to the ears.I knew something fishy was going on.How can you participate in a robbery attack and use more than half of your loot to purchase a car.The real culprits should be brought to book. I hope they don't get away with this.

  28. In many cases, some inocent people uses to accept a charge accused on them in police custody due to the torture they go through by Nigerian police. In this case, they police many be wrong and they have to pay for it simply.

They have caused more harm than good, unresponsive to SOS calls, irresponsible womanisers and their female counterparts are not left out, saucy and unruly behaviors. They have brought pain to families especially Abraka policemen, harrass students all in d name of cyber crime in fact Buhari should come to our aid in Delta state university, abraka campus.
