Woman stabs robber to death in Lagos in self defence

A middle-aged woman is currently recuperating in a Lagos hospital, after robbers stormed her rented apartment on the Lagos Island, during which she stabbed one of the assailants to death.

It was learnt that the woman, identified simply as Adenike, and her family were attacked on Tuesday at about 2am on Eyin Iga Street. It was gathered that the robbers, who were armed with knives and cutlasses, reportedly gained entrance into the house after damaging the gates.

It was also learnt that when the robbers got to Adenike’s apartment, a struggle ensued between Adenike and one of the robbers, identified as Quadri Iginla, who cut her with a knife. Adenike was said to have wrenched the knife from Iginla, and stabbed him in the stomach.

The robbery suspect reportedly lost balance and fell off from the two-storey building. Neighbours, who learnt of the robbery, were said to have alerted the police at the Adeniji Adele Division.

The other suspected robbers reportedly escaped after the police got to the area. The policemen were said to have rushed Iginla, who was unconscious, to the Lagos Island General Hospital, while Adenike was also taken by her family to a private hospital.

Unfortunately,  Iginla died in the hospital.

Adenike’s husband, who declined to give his name, said the robbers injured his wife.
He said,
“We cannot confirm the number of the robbers. They entered my apartment at about 2am. One of them injured my wife in the hand and there was a struggle. As this went on, other people called the police and a patrol van was sent to our street. “The robbers quickly fled from the house. One of them, who had sustained a knife injury, fell off the staircases. The policemen took him to a hospital for treatment.”
A police source said that Iginla was not attended to at the general hospital for lack of a vacant bed.

He added that the robbery suspect died at a health center on the Adeniji Adele Road.

He said:
“The police patrol team responded to a distress call on the street at about 2.30am. A male robbery suspect, Iginla, was found injured. The suspect and others, who are still at large, allegedly entered Adenike’s room. While making away with possessions, the woman overpowered one of them, and stabbed him in the stomach. “She was also injured in the hand. During the struggle, others escaped, but the robber fell off the building. The police took the suspect and the victim to the hospital.”
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Iginla’s girlfriend showed up at the police station, and wanted to know where he was being treated.
He said,
“No one in the area knew the identity of the robber. His girlfriend showed up at the station, and was asking the police to let her stay with him, but they did not allow her.”

The knife has since been recovered, while the case had been transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.

    1. Your first sentence is totally unnecessary. Do u expect her to wait to be stab before defendin herself? For the robbers to come in with or without sharp objects is a danger on its own. That's where self defense starts from. Deacon.

  27. The police has arrested the husband of adenike claiming they committed manslaughter and are demanding 500k as bail. I don't know what the police expect one to do when u r been attacked @ 2am the lady is even a nursing mother and she was stabbed beside her baby and in the presence of her other children and thank God she overpowered him we don't know what might have happened

  28. Well done to this woman! As for the robber, if you choose to live by the sword, that is also how you will die!

  29. Brave woman! I pray the other robbers don't make a come-back for her. Why was the victim's name released? What happened to anonymous? Yet the husband is regarded as anonymous!! Police men....not up to scratch. Why chase away dead robber's/ Iginla girlfriend? Her presence would have helped solve the identity of robber. That was a no-brainer!! But trust the Nigerian police to act otherwise. Now, he's dead and no clue. Utter rubbish!!!

  30. So she murdered the guy? Where is the evidence that the guy robbed her?She must be charged to court this is not self defence. Just a blood thirsty woman that took a man's life. My heartfelt pity goes to the family of the late guy.

  49. I wish Adenike a speedy recovery. This episode reminds me of the saying: "Everyday is for the thief and one day is for the owner" Yeah, no sympathy for the thief who met his water-loo. There is so much suffering, such that people are ready to defend what they have at every cost. I guess the gang of robbers were used to scarring and intimidating their captives. Unfortunately they met their match or should I say they wrongly calculated. If everyone could be as brave as Adenike and her family I believe the spate of robbery would be forced to decline. Thanks Nigerian Police for responding to the call the people made.

  50. There are gaps in the story that don't add up. For instance, typically it's the man of the house that robbers will target for intimidation, unless they want to rape the women. I believe this is what may have happened, hence the retaliatory stab wound. Whichever way, great kudos to this Amazon for her guts! She's a worthy woman to have as a wife. In the meantime, people should go and demonstrate in front of the Police Station where the husband is being held, until they release him! Better still, let's write a petition against their action to the Lagos State Governor and copy the Police Commissioner for the sake of this victimised couple. Linda can champion this cause for us. This is how the Nigerian Police Force go about disgracing themselves all over the place!
