South Africa returns $15 million seized for the procurement of arms

There are claims that the $15 million seized by the South African Govt. in 2014 that was meant for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian military has been returned to the Nigerian government.

The sum of $9.3 million was seized by the South African authorities on September 5, 2014 and another $5.7 million was seized later in a transaction involving Societe D’ Equipments Internationale of Nigeria and Cereberus Risk Solutions, a South African arms company.

The first seizure was by South African custom officers who intercepted  two Nigerians and an Israeli who arrived the country in a private jet allegedly owned by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) president, Rev Ayo Oritsejafor. They found 3 suitcases stashed with money when they ran them through airport scanners.

The money were reportedly concealed in two black plastic suitcases. Also found on the men, were, an invoice for a helicopter and armaments meant for Nigeria. The Nigerian government then quickly admitted that it was aware of the transaction and informed the media that the process was legal.

The former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) who spoke on behalf of the government then, said the Nigerian government had no choice as some powerful countries had refused to sell arms to Nigeria.

The South African government through its High Commissioner to Nigeria, Lulu Mnguni, said it would not release the funds until after “due process” was followed.

Yesterday, the consulting firm issuing statements on behalf of Nigerian security agencies, PR Nigeria, said the money has finally been released.

According to the statement, the money was released as a result of some legal and diplomatic processes initiated by the former NSA which “ensured that cash seized by the South African government during the cash for arms saga last year have been fully recovered by Nigeria”.

It added:
"President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration was forced to resort to the alternative market to obtain arms when western powers blocked every access to the formal arms market but the cash were seized both at the airport and in the bank”.

  16. When there is nothing more to lie about!!! How on earth will a government go to buy arms in the black market knowing fully well the prices will be higher? Also how can it be that with all the presidential jets and other commercial jets, it is only the one owned by Oritsejafor that will be used for such transactions. So many things went wrong with the previous administration and only God will continue to help us. Dasuki will have so many explanations to make. Covering for a few like Oritsejafor and his cohorts who were busy making money in government as against preaching the word of God will not absolve anyone. The truth is, money laundering was the order of the day then and the people involved preferred to give up the money in the name of the government than face the wrath involved with money laundering charges. We shall see. God knows best.

  18. They refuse to sell us arms because our military still uses barbaric methods forbidden by the U.N after world war 2. Trust us to never learn from mistakes of the past.

Also most of the arms they sell us would just be siphoned back to terror groups through corruption. Why should i sell you weapons when i know you'll give them to my enemies?

The returned money will also be misappropriated.

  19. we like to talk about our military but how can we have a strong military when we don't even know how to build our own weapons? White countries had already invented tanks, aircraft guns by 1920 world war 1, 100 years ago. Meanwhile technological advancement has not even started in africa. We have to buy shit with the oil we found in the ground because we are 2 dumb to know how to make our own. African men only know how to sleep with multiple women and throw parties.

  23. PMB should be tutored on how to behave himself in this hard won Democratic dispensation. He should stop harassing the former NSA. He should think first before he acts. We condemned his dictatorial moves. He should stop bringing unwarranted shame and trying to create a Gestapo state before the eyes of international community.

  34. It is interesting the way the mind works. Those hell bent on propping up the image of PMB will not read what is plainly written. For instance they glossed over this statement: "According to the statement, the money was released as a result of some legal and diplomatic processes initiated by the former NSA which ensured that cash seized by the South African government during the cash for arms saga last year have been fully recovered by Nigeria". While ignoring the former NSA's efforts, they go ahead to heap praise on PMB for recovering the money but there was no where in the report that PMB did anything other than the processes leading to the release happen to conclude at this time. This is undue bias.
