NYSC bars pregnant women, nursing mothers, PG students from service

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has barred pregnant women, nursing mothers and Post graduate students from partaking in the national service across the country.

NYSC DG, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, said the exemption of people in these categories from service was because they would not be able to undergo the four cardinal programmes of the NYSC, which is mobilisation, orientation, primary assignment and winding-up passing out parade.

Olawumi said it didn't make sense that pregnant women and nursing mothers would be absent from these stages of the national service, only to resurface for posting to their various places of primary assignments. The NYSC also said that pregnant women and children would no longer be allowed into orientation camps across the country.

  12. Very good! So everyone should be treated equally! The preferential treatment in camp was quite annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Na today? But truly, a pregnant woman/new mom shouldn't be allowed in the camp because of the rigorous training and activities taking place there. It's not safe for them.

  15. Everything is wrong with NIgeria. In this age and time, how can women be discriminated against in such manner. Mr o la wunmi no be woman born you? God punish you for denying women their rights.
I am living in the diaspora and I have come to the conclusion that women have no place nor dignity in NIGERIA. They treat us like shit. Unfortunately there is no active women's movement. Most of the women's organizations have been appropriated by money seeking idiots. It's time for women to arise and demand their rights in NIgeria. Oh my GOD I am so angry.
Where are all the rich female celebrities with leverage? Instead of you to speak for women's rights, you are all keeping silent.
If you are a woman reading this you should be boiling with anger
What the fuck nigeria? Even your so called president did not appoint any woman as part of his delegate to america.
Fuck you buhari and all the men that try to make women second citizens.
    May our ancestors punish you.

You cannot stay in diaspora and pass judgment on something you know nothing about. NYSC is too rigorous for pregnant women and Co. You don't even know what it is so what are you blabbing about. Your a fucktard!.

Ehm...madam " I am angry" take it easy oo? 2007 I served in Lagos and I can't count how many women lost their children coz they wanted to "serve". which is more important? The life of your child or the NYSC certificate? Soo many nursing mothers rented apartments outside the camp and brought house helps to look after their children, but many children fell I'll and died. I also know a number of women who lost their pregnancies because they want to be in camp by all means...they didn't say you can't serve: you can actually apply for service after weaning the child...or better still plan d pregnancy because after the three weeks in camp you are allowed to get pregnant as a married woman. it's just to save your life and that of the unborn Child...after all, you are suppose to be a life giver and not a murderer.

    4. Diane if the nysc wants to do that it should exclude the pregnant women N nursing mothers from the 3 weeks training but to bar them N hold their life down for a year is really discrimination. I also live abroad N trust me this is very wrong. You may not know how bad things are until you're exposed to so much more.

  32. The category of persons listed won't be in that condition for ever. I think what they actually intended is that once you're free, you can partake so far you still fall within the age restriction. I buy the idea of the DG and I feel it is simply just logical.
Please we should endeavour to think things through and not just jump into sentimental conclusions.

  37. Some people just pass senseless comments here. How can u call this discrimination? They are only trying to protect women by exempting them. If u have a pregnant wife, will u allow her go through the rigorous NYSC exercise?

    ReplyDelete
  38. How can you be leaving for your service and the only precious gift your hubby can afford is to get you pregnant when he knows he won't be their to carter for you, come!that's foolishness no bobo will help you in the camp because you're heavy no jollof for them and only you will be suffering with your heavy belle like say na my name you bin dey screem when ur hubby dy give u d ogbono...

    ReplyDelete
  39. u dont exempt them totally from the program but give them considerations. pregnant women work in the military, offices and all spheres of life. they only get maternity leave. we pretend alot in this country. Hypocrites

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with this. Pregnant women have no place in Camp

    ReplyDelete
  41. All I see here is gender stereotype! If they should be exempted, the guys that impregnated them should also be exempted. And pls, their certificates should be made available before the end of the service year so that they can get something doing while the 'so-called eligible participants' waste their time! Mtchewww

    ReplyDelete
  42. YEAH its sense making , buh all these are for women, they should put options for MEN too, and ladies dis is an added advantage, if you knw you dont want to serve JUST "GET PREGNANT" DURING YOUR FINALS......

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think this is not fair. The pregnant and nursing mothers could be exempted from camp activities, but should be posted to their PPAs after the three weeks exercise. Or their entitlements and NYSC discharge certificates should be made available. barring them from serving for a whole year is like holding them to ransom, bcos they can't look for jobs without the NYSC cert. I call on women activists to look into this urgently.....is it a crime for a married woman to be pregnant? This is UNFAIR....this decision should be rescinded or modified.

    ReplyDelete
  44. What about those who can't participate in camp activities on medical grounds? Especially those with asthma or physically handicaped? Shud dey wait till dey are cured too?
