Buckingham Palace reacts to image of a young Queen Elizabeth II giving a Nazi salute

British Tabloid newspaper today Saturday July 18th published images showing a then six year-old Queen Elizabeth II giving a Nazi salute in the early 1930s. She was with her 3-year-old sister Princess Margaret and her uncle, who would later be crowned Edward VIII. The dramatic headline on the story read; Their Royal Heilnesses - a reference to the 'Heil Hitler' greeting used in Nazi Germany

Buckingham Palace released a statement through a spokesman saying "It is disappointing that film shot eight decades ago and apparently from HM’s (her majesty’s) personal family archive has been obtained and exploited in this manner."

The Sun also published a separate explanation of why it decided to run the footage, saying the images must be seen in their historical context.
"These images have lain hidden for 82 years. We publish them today, knowing they do not reflect badly on our Queen, her late sister or mother in any way.
"They do, however, provide a fascinating insight into the warped prejudices of Edward VIII and his friends in that bleak, paranoid, tumultuous decade."
Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952 following the death of her father...

  27. Waoh..in as much as we can not really blame the queen back then,as she was just a child, her uncle needs to be stripped off every honor/title or whatever has been given or bestowed upon him..dead or alive...if you don't know about the nazi salute, you need to go see the movie.or do research..

  29. The sun in making a mountain out of nothing. In 1933, the Nazi party had not begun the occupation of Europe and its anti Semitic policies were not at the forefront of their to do list being put to work. Hitler was lets not forget a charismatic ruler who made grand speeches no matter which way you look at him. He was your modern day version of yes I can, who brought hope for the Arian race which had been battered by the effects of the 1st world war. Most people found his staunch pose and rhetorics amusing especially in the United Kingdom where attitudes were far laid back than in Germany. To practice the heil Hitler salute which became engrafted in the third Reich was done as a thing of fun. People coulnt fathom this serious German who spoke to the souls of disillusioned Germans, and could only copy his one famous act. As time rolled on, Hitler's occupation of Poland and. Chechslokovakia and other regions began to reveal the real intent behind this genius of an orator.

  30. PLEASE,

1 - Elisabeth was ONLY 6 years old in that picture. She does NOT the significance of that salute at that time.

2 - In 1933, when this picture was taken, HITLER was just a few months old in power having been DEMOCRATICALLY elected by millions of German citizens.

3 - In 1933, Hitler was a respectable German head of state. He started world war II ONLY several years later.

So basically, there's NOTHING wrong with this picture besides the need to sell more copies of some trashy British junk newspapers.
