Wike restores Omeha's rights as former governor of Rivers State

Press statement from Rivers state government
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has formally restored all the entitlements and benefits of Sir Celestine Omehia as a former Governor of the state. Governor Wike on Thursday also formally reinstated the official portrait of Sir Celestine Omehia amongst the line up of former governors of Rivers State at the Government House, Port Harcourt Executive Council Chamber.
Performing the exercise, Governor Wike said that the decision to restore the entitlements and privileges of Omehia as former governor stemmed from the fact that he worked as governor of the state between May 29, 2007 and October 25, 2007, wherein he took decisions on behalf of the State and initiated projects. He said: "I hereby put back his official portrait among those of former governors. He is now entitled to the benefits of all former governors ".

The governor said that the era of politics of bitterness in Rivers State was effectively over, noting that it was not right to personalise governance as was done by the immediate past administration. Responding, former Governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia described Thursday as the most historic day of his political career. He said that the restoration of his rights as a former goveenor indicates that his dark political days are over.

The event was witnessed by the Secretary to Rivers State Government, Kenneth Kobani, Rivers State Housing Commissioner, Barrister Emma Okah and the State Attorney-General, Chinwe Aguma.

Dear Bonario, please ignore these rabble rousers attacking you, they are confused and ignorant, The Supreme Court which is the Apex Court in the country removed Celestine Omehia from office, so from where did Wike derive the power to reinstate him as a former Governor? To say Wike is supposed to be a Lawyer? This guy is a tout, he will show them pepper. Ride on Bonario

  9. It's all politics. But let's face the facts, the Supreme court restored Amaechi's mandate, which automatically invalidated whatsoever decisions and claims Omehia must have indulged in. Wike as a lawyer should know this, but like I said, it's all politics. And this is Nigeria, with weak institutions.

    3. So by d supreme court judgement does it mean Rivers State had no governor d period Celestine Omehia was there?

    4. Now people are busy praising wike, forgetting he was the one that ran the court errands used to unsit omehia. Funny enough the same man that's talking about ending bitter politics is the same person that started it, he spearheaded the removal of that portrait in the first place only to come now and replace it as to deceive his ignorant fellowers. If ameachi had played a bitter politics, both Peter odili and Celestine omehia would be in jail by now !

  15. When the court sack omehia did they acknowledge him as ever being governor of the state? It shouldn't be about what wike thinks, it is about the law. He should stop being sentimental. When Uba kidnaped then governor Chris ngige does that makes Mba a former Governor if he had illegally acted as one?

  47. I live and work in R/S. Wike might not be perfect but he will do extremely more than Amaechi.
1stly, if the election is conducted 100 times again; Wike will floor APC. In the past one year, the House of Assembly been under lock and keys. Rivers State under Amaechi was a mess, dirt littered everywhere in the state. Workers were owed several months salary. Timariv were harassing motorist helter-skelter. The State Judiciary was under lock for over a year....Lawyer could not work and awaiting trial suspect were rotting in Jail. Less than a month of Wike, he has corrected all the above listed challenges facing the state. The State was at a stand still under Amaechi , yet he was looting heavily and funding APC. Amaechi has 99.9A in arrogance and no regards for anyone. He insulted the former president and wife, despite the fact that GEJ never answered him. Buhari promised to go after looters at the Federal level and recover monies, I feel it's only right for Wike to do same in Rivers State. And Lastly, the LG scam election Amaechi engineered can never stand because there was a court ruling preventing the election from taking place. Justice for All. Cheers. Don Casey

  53. The supreme court, per Katsina Alu, delivering the lead judgment in the case of Amaechi v. INEC (No.3) (2007) 18 NWLR (pt.1065) p.105, declared Amaechi as the rightful candidate of the PDP, who remained so in the eyes of the law and should be treated as such. And being so, Amaechi was deemed to have won the election, not Celestine Omehia. It was based on the above reasoning that Omehia was asked to vacate the seat for the person (Amaechi) who is deemed in law to occupy it. With this Supreme Court decision, Omehia, in the eyes of the law, was never a governor in Rivers state. Therefore, what Wike has done is illegal. If his action of declaring Omehia as a former governor is challenged in court, it will not survive. Politicians ought to know that sentiments and law do not mix. If Wike wants to give Omehia any other special recognition which the law permits him to do, he is entitled to do so, but definitely not unilaterally making him a governor of a state. That is the height of illegal impunity.

    ReplyDelete
  54. He is just deceiving himself, the supreme court annulled his election, that means him been a governor never existed. All it will take now is for a smart lawyer to go to court and Wike's decision will be reverted - Wike has shown how daft a lawyer he is.
