Businessman killed during police stop and search in Lagos

A 48 year old businessman, Mr. Henry Dimoji was crushed to death during a police stop and search exercise along the Mile 2 axis of Lagos state on April 30th. Punch reports that the deceased and his wife were returning from a wake keeping service in Festac town when they were stopped by a team of 4 policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Ikeja for an unapproved stop and search exercise.

According to his wife, Linda, who was with him, when he was stopped, he appealed to the policemen for him to park properly on the road but they insisted that he comes down and open his booth on the road. As he came down from his car, a tanker loaded with diesel lost control and dragged the deceased along the road, crushing him to death. The policemen fled the scene of the incident. Two of the policemen have since been arrested while two of them are currently at large.
A relative of the deceased simply identified as frank while speaking on the incident said
“When Dimoji got to the checkpoint, the policemen asked him to park and open his booth, but they did not allow him to park properly. He told them to allow him to park when one of them brought out a gun and threatened to shoot if Dimoji disobeyed. He then came out of the car to talk to the officers. Hardly had he come down when the trailer approached. The trailer driver, who was probably aware of the illegal checkpoint, tried to speed past the policemen. In the process, the trailer hit Dimoji in the thigh and dragged on the road for a few metres. When the policemen saw this, they entered their van and fled. The wife started screaming and calling for help. It was even the trailer driver and the conductor who stopped and assisted to rush him to a hospital. We have been to the SCID, and the police boss assured us that justice would be done on the matter. I saw the policemen that mounted the illegal checkpoint. They do not deserve to be in the Nigeria Police Force.”he said
The Lagos state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, while confirming the incident said “What the police are investigating is a case of a fatal accident, and the culpability of the officers in the incident. Two officers are in custody over the matter, and investigations are ongoing.”

  3. This is so sad. Our Nigeria police again. Something drastic should be done about the illegal check point.

We heard that mounting checkpoint is illegal, but you still see them.

Infact somewhere in Apapa, close to a police station. you still see them with the illegal check points extorting money from private vehicle owners and trucks.

  4. So sad. RIP sir. That's what those policemen do in Mile 2. They will leave the traffic they are supposed to control to ensure free movement of cars, and be looking for who to catch n search for nothing. They must be fished out and given the punishment they deserve.

  11. This is what happens in a corrupt and lawless country where the police are more concerned about receiving gratification than doing their jobs. May they rot in prison but knowing our country, they may be out in a week

  12. May God grant his family the fortitude to bear his loss.

The Policemen in VI,Sheraton Ikeja, and Alausa that I encounter on a daily basis are responsible and courteous.

However, when you get to places like Ogba they are very rude and violent.

Is it a reflection on the character of the DPO assigned to such areas. Do they compel their officers to go out and bring returns?

Then I thought Checkpoints were banned anyways.

The Police should conduct themselves more like the detachment on 3rd Mainland Bridge.
Those ones position themselves to prevent felony.

I believe things will change with Buhari as president.

Then there has been a spate of heightened illicit activities by area boys, hoodlums, touts, some policemen. Is it the payback APC promised them for helping them rig Lagos gubernatorial elections?

  44. The Nigerian police are responsible for more deaths than even disease or robbery incidences (even though they are the robbers) there is no end to the atrocities they commit daily. Our Govt should DO SOMETHING about these devils. They have plunged a whole family and relatives into sorrow all because of a few naira that they want to exhort.
If you are a woman and you marry a Policeman, you are cursed, if you don't have a job and you join the police, I curse you. If you have any relationship with a Policeman at all, I hereby curse you.

  82. Too bad, may his soul rest in peace. I witnessed almost similar incident along that axis, precisely at berger car stand where they to stopped me in the middle of the road. Surprisingly, I asked that they let me pullover properly as I had my entire family in the vehicle but they maintained that I remained on the spot, the next thing I knew was one corporal threatning to shoot me if I don't obey them.
The team was led by one inspector whom they all called Alhaji with a silver tooth.
Thank GOD for saving my entire household that day.
