Our economy cannot support brand new trains - Doyin Okupe says. Nigerians react

In an interview with Adeola Fayehun of Sahara TV, Presidential aide Doyin Okupe said Nigeria cannot have brand new trains because our economy cannot support it. He was reacting to a question on why trains seen in Nigeria are looking very Locomotive compared to the ones in America
"Forget it. We are not America. You cannot have brand new trains because the economy cannot support that."he said
Asked why Nigeria economy cannot support the purchase of brand new trains since we have been quoted as the largest economy in Africa, Dr Okupe only said; "We are the largest market. We are the largest economy" and the video fades out.

Nigerians have since reacted to Mr Okupe's statement. See that after the cut..

  46. If y'all eggheads learn to do basic math, then find out how much such projects cost other Countries in the past you'll know Nigeria can't afford such.

Is it with our 25.8 Billion USD budget we want to afford that? LOL. Such projects often cost that much. And remember that 70% of our Budget goes into recurrent expenditure.

He is saying the blank truth, we can't afford such. Nigeria isn't as wealthy as some of y'all imagine.

  69. Doyin Okupe is right. The Return on Investment factor is key. Having spent say N1b on a project one must think of the source of positive cashflow in return over a certain number of years. Buying used trains for now is a prudent economic plan to reduce the initial investment in this unstable economic climate.
