Almajiri schools: How Jonathan gave homeless street beggars decent education & shelter

Sponsored post.
The Almajiri Integrated Model School (AIMS) was commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 to remove the massive number of school-age children roaming the streets, off them. The objective was to bridge the gap between Islamic and Western education in the region, according to Sheik ShehuUbaidullah, the Principal of one of the schools in Sokoto that this reporter visited.

Ubaidullah who had previously been the principal of a traditional Almajiri school for seven years, explains to me that he embraced the integration of conventional Western school system and Islamic education as a means to re-educate children in the region and convince families in rural areas send their children to school.

At the Almajiri Model Boarding School in Gagi, Sokoto, I saw the pupils – all 260 of them - partake in an early morning and nightly Quranic recitation. In between, all other subjects taught to students in conventional schools are being taught as well. Students enjoy regular extra-curricular activities, take classes in Social Studies, utilize a science lab and are trained in vocational skills via a regular monthly workshop held by the school management.

It seems like one administration  - the Jonathan one - has finally found a solution to the seemingly endless number of homeless children.

  18. This is funny ooo! The Almajiri Integrated Model School (AIMS) was commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 but the Picture has ETF 2010 (T.S.E) .... Which way Naija.

    1. The desks and chairs were bought under the ETF 2010 and the school was commissioned in 2012. There is nothing confusing there. In real life, sometimes you buy equipment way ahead of time, and don't commission the finished project until a year or two later

      Delete
  19. Did the post said the project was commisioned in 2012? Why the Locker of those children reading ETF project 2010. Was this project started since 2010?
Please I just want to know.

  29. As someone that have resided in d north,
    am aware of this initiative,
    which is an applaudable one,
my guess is that some aggrieved persons are not in support,
that`s why boko haram initial targets were SCHOOLS...

If i hear. Jonathan thinks we Nigerians are fools ba. He seems delutional. He doesn't av to sponsor any post for all of us to see. Fashola worked and we all saw what he did, amechi work on education in his state and those who saw it saw it.... He keeps lying to us about everything. Trust me I would av voted for him out of sentiment but lies! I ll never vote for him for thinking we Nigerians are fools. He hasnt done a single thing. If he has reduced d price of fuel a yr ago, that could have been part of his achievements, if he had slashed NEPA bills a yr ago, that could have been part of his achievements. If he had gotten d military to fight book haram a yr ago, dt would have been part of his achievements.
So all ds propaganda won't get him anywhere

  34. Some northerners shud mind themselves pls. So they don't know how many kids they have.Have you ever heard of almajiri in the east? Yet if you go to any office in Abuja, they occupy major positions. Polio is yet to be eradicated in the north. Will FG feed you guys? So uneducated

  35. I hate when others r talking about technological advancements, we r here talking of people who can't feed, educate and cater for their own children. Rubbish jonathan shud use our resources for better things. Massive family planning shud be encouraged their just like in china and no man shud marry more than one wife.

  48. Almajari Schools....HMnnnnn
I understand what they want to do but when a system is hooked on the traditions /culture and religion of a people you need to first identify the priority first of a people before assuming that it is a physical School that is their main priority need. If not this project will very much flop and be a waste of Funds. We have built schools (my Company) in the North much of which is not being put to use due to Insecurity, lack of qualified teachers, preference for islamic based education, payment of school fees and general in-priority for education(for lack of better word). Two of our newly built schools were burnt by BH...........

Give us detail account of how much revenue Nigeria generated since inception of your tenure and compare to the 'overrated' projects being advertised. This administration is full of deceit and lies. 54. yh yh yh... You have tried GEJ, just leave

  55. #Lol - when you are in power, controlling the largest network in Africa on TV and radio and so on and have to sponsor your achievements, then that means your people are all blind or you are doing nothing!

#Classic - BUHARI TO BUILD 4 REFINERIES IN 4 YEARS (He built 2 before in 2 years so why should we doubt him?)

#SMH - People keep saying bad eggs from PDP to APC; THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT THESE BAD EGGS WILL BE LED BY A GOOD EGG! Nigerians are bad drivers but when they go abroad they become the best of drivers because they are made to be held responsible for driving badly unlike in Nigeria when 500NGN or less can get you out of trouble.

  56. Sha, Jonathan tried in reaching out to the North, empowering them through education when their own leaders paid a blind eye to this injustice.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Please, apart from the one at Gagi that Jonathan commissioned which its picture is always in circulation, where are the other almajiri schools? I need their addresses for my educational research.
