Naira hits N213 to dollar at Bureau De Change, black market

The naira lost N4 to the dollar to sell at N213 at the black market and N210 at the Bureau De Change (BDCs) segment of the official market.

A dealer, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that the depreciation might not be unconnected with the closure of trading at the interbank market by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The dealer also said that the CBN’s decision, which was meant to control speculations in the market, might be responsible for the depreciation.

Meanwhile the naira against the pound sold at N307 and N314 at the BDCs and black market respectively. However, it exchanged against the euro at N235 at the BDCs, while it sold for N237 at the black market.

On January 28, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the CBN, directed that only BDCs and banks with genuine demand for foreign exchange should get forex allocation. He said the apex bank put up measures to calm the strong volatility observed in the forex market to save the naira from further depreciation. It increased the weekly supply of dollars per BDC operator from 15,000 dollars to 30,000 dollars and also set aside extra 30,000 dollars to the BDC sector. The banking sector regulator said the move was part of measures to deepen the BDCs segment.

    2. @ Mo, don't mind those daft dumb idiot, they are still shouting GEJ to continue as their president. Fools. The fact that he couldn't fix the electricity problem, is that suppose to be a transformation or development? $20 billion dollars went missing, how much we make on crude oil per day, what about subsidy scam? we are one of the poorest country in the world yet we have the richest black man and second richest black woman. How much do we need to fix electricity problem? This is money that we can generate in few months and we will have stable electricity supply. This isn't about APC, we want a change, he can't rule us by force. Fayose the governor of Ekiti attacked a court of law and nothing happened, inspector general of police removed security aides to Aminu Tambuwal without him being impeached as speaker of the house, using soldiers to rig Ekiti state election, shutting the likes of Rotimi Amechi out of Ekiti elections, you mentioned only transformation, what about corruption? What about our security agencies that has been compromised? What about extra judicial killings? What about strikes from universities, polytechnic and association of medical doctors? What about the warships our maritime sector bought through ex militants? He let Diepreye Alamieyeseigha off the hook by pardoning him, what about the money that was transported by plane to South Africa? Moving such huge of cash.hmmmmm. Bros this man is a total failure, I mean he has failed all Nigerians.

    5. Guys, don't be quick to forget that this is an international phenomenon. Many countries are dependent on oil just as Nigeria is. Is our government to be blamed for the world wide crash in oil prices? I don't think so. A country like Russia, although neck deep in economic sanctions, is also feeling the brunt of the slump in oil prices. Their currency is also on a very sharp decline. Other governments before GEJ (not that I believe he is 100% efficient) have also been fully dependent on oil. The GEJ gov't should be given at least a slight commendation for boosting Nigeria's agricultural sector. No other past gov't has had such an effect.

  37. This has nothing to do with CBN. As a matter of fact, CBN should do nothing because any money spent supporting naira is a waste. Any gain will be erased in days if not hours. Russia poured billions of dollars to support their rubble, but the carnage continued. US dollar is strong against all currencies at this time. That's all

They fail to do that and Nigeria is facing big challenge right now. Nigerians should blame Amaechi who led the state governors to rebel against the president.
