Lekki/Epe toll gate goes if I’m elected governor - Jimi Agbaje says

Lagos state PDP gubernatorial candidate Jimi Agbaje, has promised to pull down the Lekki/Epe toll gates, if elected next governor of the state. He said this at a peaceful protest, tagged March for freedom, organised by Freedom Group in Lekki
"I am here to show solidarity with you on the issue of the toll plaza for which you are marching today and assure you that when we get into office, these toll gates will come down; I will demolish all of them. The public/private partnership, PPP, arrangement behind this project is not transparent.
Look at the BRT and Lagos light rail projects, they are collapsing because the PPP arrangements they have on ground are not sustainable. The light rail which was supposed to have been ready since 2012, is grounded and this is because of vested interests of a few people. The PPP arrangements are skewed to favour only a few people, so for me, I am in solidarity with you and a vote for us is a vote for freedom, a vote to bring down the toll plazas.” Mr Agbaje said (source -Vanguard)

  33. I personally do not support the removal of the tollgate on lekki-epe axis. I`m also
more surprised that majority of those clamouring for the removal do not live on the
island, they live on the mainland and has never gone as far as Ajah. Tollgate is not
    only in Nigeria.
This project was kicked off and is being maintained through public-private
partnership. And I believe asides the public-private investors returns, the state government gets some sort of revenue from this project.
The project is still ongoing from the ajah axis and the rate at which people move to
this part of Lagos daily cannot be quantified. I earlier on leave home 6am for work
now I have to leave few minutes before 5am just to beat the traffic.
So, if you say you will remove this tollgate, who will finance and complete the
dualization from ajah to epe? Are we going to wait on FG again to come and complete it? If not for the introduction of PPP,this area would still be largely
underdeveloped. More so there are alternate routes if you don’t want to pay toll
    fees.
Right now you can’t find any pot hole on that road from lekki to ajah(anytime
there’s a pothole,it will be taken care of within a week). If your car breaks down on
that road from lekki to chevron area, this same LCC will tow it off the road for you free within 30mins,infact as soon as they notice your car, they will be on standby
with you till its towed off.
Now each tollgate has about 14 to 16 slots with 2 cashiers each daily (2 shifts daily)
,making 28 to32 attendants per tollgate. What will happen to these people, will you
take these jobs away from them? Most of them are married, what will happen to their
livelihood. Armed robbery on this lekki-epe axis is nothing compared to the spate of robbery
on the mainland and this might be because this axis is more like one way in and
out.Any major armed robber will either take lekki as exit or go all the way down to
Epe or use the waterways. Left to me this toll gates indirectly stems the rise of
robbery on the island as it slimmed the getaway chances of robbers.
I believe someone doesn’t truly understand what is going on and is playing on the ignorance of some set of people to gain cheap popularity.

    7. Hmm @Carlos, your points are not entirely correct o. I can understand that of employment generation but to say it stems robbery on the Lekki axis is a far cry. Plus the towing service is not free. Speaking of generating revenue for the state government, do you have any idea how much Lagos state is indebted to the world Bank on direct foreign investment not to mention the amount fashola raised in bonds to finance the installation of those gates, only to enrich the pockets of a few through the instrumentality of LCC, HiTech and their cohorts. I'd say Lagos State is perhaps the most corrupt state in the federation. Be wise!

First he says he will give Lagosains free internet! Seriously , does he think we are morons? Nothing is free, if Lagosains are not paying for it that means the government is. Out of all the things that still needs to be done for the masses is free internet the best use of State funds! Not to forget that there are still a lot of roads to be developed in the mainland, if the government bears the cost of paying the toll that will be at the expense of other projects. It’s unfair to give such a road to the middle class at the expense of the poor , there is an alternative route for anyone who doesn’t want to pay toll and that is fine.

Let's be sincere, toll pay there is 120 naira, federal govt owned toll rate at murtala mohammed airport is old, not maintained and they still collect 200 or more, what does he has to say about that? He wants to eradicate Lastma, has Lastma not maintained orderliness on lagos roads since its inception?
He wants to return agbero back to lagos so that robbery will return. Oshodi will become a fearful place to walk through by 7 pm again. Alpha beta has generated income for lagos, many years when lagos was denied federal allocation, alpha beta helped lagos to he negate money allocation nd lagos was in order, civil servants got there salaries promptly and projects went on, why are you angry just because it's owned by tinubu? Is the company not serving purpose? Let's be sincere, it took 16 years for tinubu and fashola to bring lagos this good, you won't like lagos of Jimi after 4 years, obanikoro, bode George are waiting to jump in and exploit without adding value. Bode George and Koro both served several years at federal level with no achievement to contribute other than looting, do you want to hand over our peaceful lagos to them? You can't know the value of what you have until it's lost. If PDP at federal level have been good since 16 years ago, we won't ask for change, we will definitely keep supporting them. Lagos has been good since 1999, though it can get better but it's very wrong for anyone to say lagos is bad under fashola.

  80. Instead of demolishing, just reduce it or stop it completely....demolishing is just wasting public money...at thesame time, the toll gate has it's own advantages remember that too mr politician and stop. Taking the people for a ride

  82. all i know is that am voting 4 jimi agbaje as governor and buhari has our president...Tinubu has been there 4 a very long time since the time of .A.D now to acn, what u people dont realise is that, whether u like it or not Tinubu is still d one rulling this state indirectly beit fashola or ambody, he has power over them and the man has eating money in dis lagos...u guyz should be wise and open ur eyes,if pdp become d next govt of dis state, they will do more just to retain lagos and that what we need, let there competition so that they will all sit tight, in a situation whereby we only hav one party rulling, what do u xpect...as for me i dont feel d ambode guy cos i can see some level of desperation in him which i dont like...his advert on tv put me off, he is d son of a teacher, a farmer, a doctor, who cares about all that..i srongly believe that d face of lagos will change if jimi agbaje emerge the next governor of lagos.all i want is change in all area

  89. Jk is is the most articulate and intelligent candidate, I watched the debate and I realized how clueless ambode is, he doesn't even have fact and figures on lagos....if I may say Fashola have done well but the next phase of lagos needs a man like JK, independent (no god father attached) intelligent, sound and vibrant...he came up with the new marine economics policy that will transform the waterways for lagos...and with regards to Lekki ajah too, I totally agree when he said he will destroy it cos the PPP didn't build from end to end so the contract is a sham for APC godfather however he said the Lekki ikoyi toll will be sustained since it was freshly built...I believe JK is best for lagos.

  95. Dis shows dis JK is an Idiot nor a Looser, you are never going to be the next Governor in Lagos State......Fashola did this Toll gate to Generate Internal revenue for Lagos state and it has been maintained well ever since it has been built, there are towing Vehicle to tow ur car for u if ur car breaks down and they also deal with any kind of portholes around the area.....The money made from the Toll is being used by State Govt in other finances to support the State Government allocation and all incase Federal Govt/PDP refused to pay out Lagos State Allocation like what happened during Tinubu's tenure....So Mr Jk for uttering this trash from your mouth, you are never going to be the next Governor of Lagos State.....We fucking don't need you nor PDP in Lagos...Thank you !!!

  102. Most of the daft clowns writing rubbish here do not even live in Lekki/Ajah axis! I live there! Most sane residents in that axis want the tolls to remain there, although we would be happy with a little reduction in the toll fees. Jimi Agbaje has just shown why he is not fit to be Governor of a progressive Lagos! You lead some hired goons to have a protest against the toll and the best thing to say is that you will demolish the tolls! What is the alternative? Some of us knew how that road was so bad until the LCC tolls got erected...

AMBODE WILL BE GOVERNOR BY GOD'S GRACE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  103. JK, am really disappointed in u. So u ar telling us that all d money spent on that tollgate will be waste. U didnt think of reducing the fare or making it free but destruction. U've lost my vote pls.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Am not surprise abt jk's decision dat he wud pull down d lekki toll for wht? Bcos he was guided by former NPA chairman who was an ex convicted bcos of NPA funds. After all there is an alternative for who can't afford to pay toll. We pay toll in airport as many times u cross n it's been control by pdp. So d man shud go back to his pharmacy shop. Ambode for real

    ReplyDelete
  105. pls has anyone thought about the amount borrowed for this project and d payback plan?? N50 billion was borrowed for this project for a payback period of 30 years. the road construction has lasted for about 12 years so far and the N50 billion has been paid back to the lender like 2 years back. so the big question is this where is the 18 years balance payment going to????the cabal i guess!!! JK all the way, pls cancel d toll but dont break the buildings. God bless

    ReplyDelete
  106. Jk didn't understand wht governance all abt it's easy to say but tough to execute wen u re there. Will Jk tell us dat he will rule lagos without his own God father(Bode George n Ogunlewe) I think d man shud keep quiet of all his impossible promises for lagosian. Bode George looted NPA money wen d he was d chairman n was convicted. Today wht happen to judge? He was posted out frm d criminal matter to marital n family affair. Ogunlewe was a former minister for works wht was his impact in lagos. So, jk shud go back to his pharmacy shop n face wht he knows better to practice.

  107. LCC built that toll gate and it's a company own by Tinubu and he said he'l collect the toll gate mony for 30years b4 he'l giv it back 2 d lagos state govt.....i pray JK wins so he'l demolish it

    ReplyDelete
  108. JK IS just someone with the gift of the gab (smooth talker) whilst Ambode unfortunately stammers and stutters so do not come across as clear as he would want to. If we however listen to the both of them we will know that JK is not ready for the State house as he is always goofing about policies but can use is eloquence to deceive people that are not dicerning

  109. Ambode is a thief and a puppet for Tinubu. we've had enough of their coded corruption and monopoly. do be deceived people, those guyz make 100 times more than they spend on developing the city. we are done. JK WE KNOW, JK WE TRUST, JK WE VOTE.....

  114. I laugh at most comments here... Linda..some of these people didn't go to school o...Lol jokes... Lekki-Epe toll gate is not the same as lekki-ikoyi or lekki-vi... He was referring to the one towards vgc...the one that no one pays for... I hail you lib people o....lmao

    ReplyDelete
  115. It is rather sad to read people's comment here criticizing what Jimi has said without understanding what he is saying. He never said he would close down the roads!! He said he would demolish the toil gates and rightly so. Standard major roads abroad are way wider than the Lekki-expressway and the citizens don't have to pay toll. Serviced roads are usually roads that serve as alternative and provide a shorter link to multiple roads and are obviously optional. How deep are we into slavery and backwardness that we are stuck in party politics that has done nothing for us so bad that we can not recognize intelligent and good meaning leaders....what a shame? Have you heard Ambode speak? Another clueless leader like GEJ. So for me PDP in Lagos, APC for federal; cos I trust Buhari not to be a toy in the hands of Tinubu like Ambode will

    ReplyDelete
  116. Nigerians can be very pathetic, this APC have been collecting this toll fare for years now. They want to collect it forever??????? JIMI i support you, you are credible. APC is all about TAX TAX TAX. They will sell Lagos if care is not taken. No educated person will vote APC for Lagos State, only low minded people.

  117. What has toll gate done for us? Traffic and stealing my money. Thief APC

  118. My advice for APC, deal with street urchins so called area boys. That's my own headache!

  119. we are suffering in ibeju lekki, JK what took you so long to say this don't even demolish it, pay hitech off and reduce the price. no more tinubu and it's allies reaping us off anymore we are tired

    ReplyDelete
  120. Lekki toll is not Lagos' problem please shut up mister! There's a freaking alternative route! Take it if you don't want to pay the toll! Pull down the toll gates and then the road becomes like every other road with poor maintenance and potholes and shit! Toll gates are not alien to Lagos, even developed countries have toll gates, UK, U.S, Abu Dhabi etc, did they tell you that toll gate is their problem?!

    ReplyDelete
  121. Is it to demolish the toll?

How about reducing the cost and then use the money to develop and construct roads in Lekki, especially inner streets, better drainages and the likes.

If the tolls are demolished, won't there be an excuse not to continue construction within that region since money wont be generated as before?

Another thing is if He was in power not Fashola, would he have thought of BRT and the Railway?

My opinion for all the candidates is before promises are made there should a be rational reason and a long term effect not just to look good to the public.

Also we want to know what they are going to do to improve the state and country as well as how they are going to execute it and how the income is going to be generated to accomplish them.

    ReplyDelete
  122. i tink dat d toll is jst to exploit us living in d ajah/lekki axis.since d ivention of d toll public transportation has drastically increased. b4 d toll gate ajah to lekki was N70 bt now N150 dat twice wat we use to pay.imagine som 1 wrking in lekki 4rm ajah spending N15,500 mntly and collecting N30k as salary who are u working 4 apc abi.
