Graphic photo: Pharmacist assassinated in Benue, protest erupts

A popular Pharmacist in Gboko Benue named Cletus Ternenge Labe (pictured above), the founder of La-Bet Pharmaceuticals was assassinated by unknown gunmen at about 7:45pm yesterday January 21st right inside his pharmaceutical complex.

According to a direct relative who spoke with LIB, Cletus got an emergency call to come over to his health center around 7:35pm yesterday; he hurriedly left his home and went there, only for him to attacked by unknown persons with a machete. An eye-witness said the assassins numbering 6 arrived the premises in a red Toyota car popularly called 'dog nyash', two remained in the car while four went inside. By the time Cletus was found later by neighbors, his head had been split open. He was also shot. The men also left his pharmacy with some cash. I have a photo of what happened to Cletus after the cut but *viewer discretion advise*

Man's inhumanity to man...

"Cletus was a very brave health personnel whom notwithstanding the threats he got from the Doctors Association within Gboko, went ahead to administer health services to the poor masses at a subsidized and affordable rate. He was dragged to court for refusing to stop affordable medical treatments. His life was taken when it became clear that he was going to win the case" a relative said
His death has thrown Gboko city into a state of chaos and lawlessness as the youths already embarked on violent protest, destroying properties, blocking roads and most especially destroy sign posts that has hospital names on them. See the photos below...

    3. Very heartbreaking and no one has the right to take another man's life. People should also know their job description, a pharmacist should not be treating patients, that's not his job. A pharmacist administers medication that the Dr has prescribed, formulates drugs, advice what drug to use incase of interactions and the list goes on,involving the drugs alone but never to diagnose or treat, that's crossing the line and to also reduce the price of treatment? That's stepping on toes of the doctors but this is Nigeria, anything goes. He would have lost his license to practice as a pharmacist if he was in a developed country. Condolences to his family.

I'm so sure ur one of those arrogant doctors dt believe u are d alpha n omega of d health profession.. Well... FYI, if he's a pharmacist, he has d right to diagnose n treat ailments dt hv to do with d drugs in d essential drugs list... Especially d popular ones.. Or why else did he go thru all d clinical trainings he went thru... So.. Gt it out of ur thick skull dt all a pharmacist is good for is check for d silly mistakes u arrogant doctors make when prescribing....

    16. Anon 8:06pm I had been waiting for someone as daft as you to comment and I got you :) if you go through again you would see that I didn't say what was done to him was right. If you are well educated, you would know what your job description is and won't step on toes. A pharmacist doesn't diagnose or treat, period. So dont be the stereotypical Nigerian who claims to be a banker when he is a security guard at the bank. Be proud of your profession and know it's limits, if you didn't get the profession you desired because of JAMB, don't be lazy, you can still go to school, your brain hasn't dried up in your skull or maybe it has, that's why you are looking for a short cut. Have a great night.

      Delete
    17. Anonymous 3.47 you are very brainless. Like anon 8:06 stated, I'm sure you are one of those arrogant doctors. I have seen nurses even in Lagos opening 'shops' and treating patients. What do doctors even know? Pharmacists learn everything doctors learn so as to know how drugs truly affect the body and we learn so much more. In rural areas how do you expect patients to have money to go to clinics of wicked doctors who have made things so expensive? The pharmacist is one person that can easily make so much money from people in a community if so desired but this is a man that put the people 1st! Don't even get me started you senseless anon. Here in the uk we have pharmacist independent prescribers so don't go behaving like you know the job description of a pharmacist!

      Delete
    18. Anon 12:16am you stay in the UK and you are this daft? I thought with such exposure you should have something small that can develop your tiny brain. The pharmacist independent prescribers, do they perform D and C? Isn't it what a lot of your people do with no knowledge of surgery? What courses do you do in medicine exactly? Urology? GI? Dermatology? The list goes on my friend. The little you do cannot make you a Dr. Treatment isn't restricted to administering drugs, why would patients go to see a pharmacist if he/she is only administering drugs? Of course it goes beyond that. Please restrict yourself to giving the drugs I prescribe because I'm sure I even know pharmacology and the rest more than you do. I won't even want someone like you to formulate any drug lol. Go to sleep and stop being jobless and interfering with my reading. I'm trying to update my knowledge to the current trends unlike you who is trying to be a quack :)

      Delete
    20. Wow @anon 3.47 may God help you develop that brain one day. In the meantime, let's hope the peanut u have now doesn't get fried up.

  68. For those ignorant, and saying a Pharmasist does not have the right to treat people are so foolish! Go and check the rules guiding Community Pharmacist. They have the right to treat minor sicknesses, incase the issue is beyond them, they can refer, and all what they can treat is stipulated in there code, the guy was not over stepping his boundary, his sin was that he was selling drugs at cheaper rate, and sometimes even given free to those who do not have money.

  81. I pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased and fortitude for the family. I agree with others that the act is inhuman, wicked and criminal and the victims should be brought to book. What I don't understand is why the act is being linked to some unknown doctors. I'm aware doctors don't sell drugs. If the bone of contention is that Mr. Cletus was selling drugs at subsidised price, why then are the suspects not fellow Pharmacists who are being pushed out of the market by their higher prices. They are the main competitors not the doctors. This is food for thought. Anonymous.

  89. The problem here isn't about selling drugs @anonymous 8:55. It is about the deflection of patients from clinics. It was stated clearly that he had a case in the court with the Association of Doctors in Gboko. Infact a friend living there said he already won the case last week.
There has also been an incident of the same doctors' association threatening a particular hospital (whose name I choose not to mention) for carrying out surgeries at a far lesser price.
If you make yourself relevant people will look for you. In other countries, research has shown that patients have more confidence in their Pharmacist than any other health professional including doctors. No envy can take this away. #servicehumanity
