Patience Jonathan replies Gen. Buhari on scrapping the office of the First Lady

General Buhari stated yesterday in an interview with Weekly Trust that if elected as president in next year’s presidential election, he would abolish the office of the First Lady. The office, though not constitutionally recognized, has been maintained by past and present administrations and is even seen as being key in policy decisions. He said that ministries, which are constitutional, should be allowed to play their roles instead.
"There is the Ministry of Women Affairs, and so on. I was raised by my mother, as I lost my father when I was under 6 yars, so I know what a woman can do if given the chance”.
In a subtle way of replying Buhari's comments, First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, emphasized the importance of the office of the First Lady in the Nigerian politics, saying that the office has been an avenue for mobilizing women for mass participation in politics.

She said this in Abia state during a reception organized for her by the Ohuhu community, her maternal home in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia state, yesterday.

She said the bid by politicians from the opposition camp to scrap the office of the First Lady would amount to sending the Nigerian women back to the kitchen if such came to fruition, adding,

“It is not our portion to go back to the kitchen. We have women that are capable. We can contribute our quota to the development of Nigeria".
She also told the women not to vote for any politician who doesn't respect women.
The First Lady had veered off from the address she was reading at the occasion when she directed the attention of guests to Buhari’s idea which she said was not practicable in the ongoing political dispensation because of the critical role women have been playing in politics.

Besides, he never said anything wrong, the cost of running such an unconstitutional office is quiet expensive, and its abolishment will pave ways of utilising these funds judiciously and to empower a semi baked unemployed toy soldier like you...

  20. The office of the first lady can still exist but when it comes to policy making I disagree. The position of the first lady has nothing to do with women in politics. Most political women are already there even before the first lady came into power, so the first lady position has nothing to do with mobilizing women into politics. It should even be scrapped sef if any woman is in politics she should be because she strong and intelligent not because her husband has a position there whether she is worthy or not she will be given a position. like our recent first lady who claim she went to school but doesn't know anything with her continued grammatical blunders.

He is archaic and has an extremely conservative and extremist mindset.
All this unnecessary social media activity and photo shoot session, door to door visitation is only for election. If he wins the election, we won't see their brake light again
He is a religious fanatic who wants to islamise Nigeria. We Nigerians should better be mindful of who we vote for.
Him saying that he will scrap the office of the first lady already shows how he is going to treat women if he wins.

According to him, he has not been successful, he is a broke ass so how does he want to stir Nigeria towards success.

    1. There is no visible office of the First Lady in Britain because UK is a Unitary System of Government. Nigeria, USA, Germany, etc, are Federal System of Government. Buhari might mean well, but, he seem ignorant. Right now, nigeria is under a democratic system of government, not Buhari type military dictatorship. Under a democratic system of government, many things are done diffetently. Buhari, at his age does not seem to understand that. He is pathetic. Like I've said, Buhari is wasting his time. Buhari will never ever be Nigerian President. IBB, the Nigerian Army, millions of Nigerians, even APC supporters do not want Buhari. Buhari should go back to the jungle with his cows, camels, goats and chicken. Politics, city life and modernity is not for Buhari.

  93. I guess Patience Jonathan still craves for a platform to be recognized on. Come to think of it, the mere existence of the office of the first lady suggests Nigeria does not have as much regard for the woman when it comes to leadership - "make we just do something for them, make e no be like say......". Mrs Jonathan should not forget that she has equal right to contest for the presidency as much as Mr Jonathan has, instead of clamouring to be an appendage we need not have. Afterall, when we have a female president, the concept of office of the first man (or office of the first lord) will be ludicrous. Think Dame, think.

BUHARI, damn you. You will never, ever be President. Stop wasting your time. Stop being a nuisance. You and ATIKU must RETIRE, NOW. Boko Haram SCUMBAGS.

  101. Is Buhari for real? So among all the problems Nigeria is facing, scraping the office of the first lady is his first goal? I can see he's truly thinking straight. He is old and should be allow to rest while dispensing advice if need be.

  107. of course, the office is constitutionally not recognised and it should be abolished since there is ministry of women affairs, all what she was saying is the duty of such ministry. 1st lady's office has become an avenue of corruption, women cheating, inpersonations, and evil place, created for goodless sake. this should be abolished.

  111. I agree with her on this one.y would buhari even think of scrapping d office of d first lady? He won't even win,so no need talking too much

    1. Didn't you read what he wrote? He was raised by only his mother and you say he has no respect for women because he is scrapping a political office? Madam wake up. He even said he plans to add more women to his organization because he has seen what women can do when given the chance. Don't say rubbish biko

      Delete
  112. GMB needs a good PR person to present his ideas very well. I believe he does not dislike women, but his choice of words needs reconstruction if he is gonna win this election. Scrapping the office of first lady should not be his unilateral decision. His campaign team should learn to make quick corrections when off-script errors like this one occur. We probably need a more democratic and less militarized GMB in 2015.

    ReplyDelete
  113. It should be scrapped. That will not send the women back to the kitchen. Women are very important in nation building but I am of the view that these roles expected of them cannot and will never be fulfilled through the Office of the First Lady. It does not make sense. So if a woman goes ahead to be a Chief Executive of a state in Nigeria or even as the Commander-in-Chief, what sense does it make to create the Office of the First Gentleman.

  117. Very sad my LIB friends aren't "reading along the lines" Buhari was only ,emphasizing the need to allow office holders do their job! This woman would wreck her husband's career! Who's job is it to go to the kitchen? TFC, Mama Kas, Yellow Chilli, abi na "Omo Odo - Housemaid" @Henry Eze: You need to be acquainted with the laws of our dear country, Nigeria! Dont destroy yourself with your mouth!

    ReplyDelete
  118. @Henry Eze, your reaction tells me two things. Either that you are still in Diapers or you are not above 24 yrs of age. Nobody is talking about making women slaves. Buhari is only making a case of the existence of illegality. If you dont like it, tell your constituency rep to move the motion. That is, if you know who represents you. THE OFFICE OF FIRST LADY IS ILLEGAL. Period

    ReplyDelete
  119. My fellow ladies, please and please, am not disputing the fact that women can't thrive in politics infact asides Ngozi and Patience who currently Nigerians are skeptical about their integrity, the other ladies have done excellently well! However, do not forget the primary objective of your marriage. Your home comes FIRST before your country! "Deal with your home and Nigeria will be GREAT"

  121. People, People, People. He is not marginalizing women. He has said that the 'Ministry of Women Affairs' should stay. This ministry would cater for women and children.

The Office of the first lady is just a scam to embezzle money. Why do we want duplicated efforts leading to waste of money.

For once LIB readers, please use your common sense.

    Thank me later.

  131. I think GMB, Osinbajo and Amechi should apply some wisdom in making statements to the public. They have to understand that a vast majority of Nigerians adjudge issues based on sentiments instead of objectivity. PDP pick on such comments, twist its context and whip sentiments from Nigerians (as expected) to gain some cheap popularity. So far,PDP has not been able to tell Nigerians what it will do differently to better the country, but have engaged in a campaign of malignity,finger-pointing and fault-finding.They focused on APC instead of focusing on Nigerians, while APC is doing the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  132. The success or failure of APC presidential bid in 2015 will depend on PR, given the fact that vast majority of the electorate is deeply sentimental.

  137. Buhari should go back to the jungle with his cows, camels, goats and chickens. Politics, city life and modernity is not for Buhari. Buhari has no respect for women.

Please, if you don't know what to comment or you comment with your feet instead of your brains, or you just want to win Linda's Awoof that means that you DO NOT DESERVE TO BE A NIGERIAN. We should be more concerned about this nation and the future of our generations unborn, instead of all our stupid and selfish sentiments. PLEASE WHAT IS THE OFFICE OF FIRST LADY?. WHAT IF A WOMAN BECOMES THE PRESIDENT???? WILL THERE BE OFFICE OF THE FIRST GENTLEMAN????OR THERE IS NO HOPE OF IGERIA PRRDUCING A FEMALE PRESIDENT???WHO IS FOOLING WHO???.Am not a fan of any of the contesting presidents. Am just a mother that is WORRIED about the future of a NATION that she loves so much. There is so much madness going on in this nation. Why is Madam Peace worried about position when over 200 chibok girls are languishing in God knows where? Why is she talking about position when Internally Displaced children and women are suffering untold hardship in so many camps??? Why is she replying if her WORKS can speak for her instead of using the office to destroy states through her politics of intervention into state politics????? For me, office of FIRST LADY OR FIRST GENTLE MAN IS NOT A NIGERIAN ISSUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LET US FIRST SAVE THIS NATION FROM DESTRUCTION BEFORE WE TALK ABOUT VERY TRIVIAL ISSUE LIKE A NON ELECTIVE OFFICE LIKE THAT. PLEASE LET US FACE THE ISSUES AT HAND. PLEASE, HOW MANY BLOGGERS IN ABUJA OR NORTH WENT TO CHURCH ON XMAS DAY WITHOUT THAT TINGLING FEAR AT THE BACK OF YOUR MIND THAT TODAY MIGHT BE YOUR END BECAUSE OF BOMB??????? Linda Ikeji's bloggers please step up your acts in patrotism to THIS FIRST NATION NIGERIA. THIS IS OUR OWN OFFICE!!!!!!IF WE ALLOW THEM(politicians) SCRAPE THIS OUR OFFICE THROUGH THEIR SELFISH GIMMICKS THEN WE ARE DOMMED!!!!!!!

  139. What Buhari wants to do is stop wastage. The Nigeria First lady office has been running as a default political office in Patience Jonathan office runs as a political office. Unnecessary funds are been sunk in. The last first lady and present one have used it for land grabbing exercises. By the way we have a women's affair ministry, also contribution has Patience made added to Nigeria during her term in the office?
