GEJ to Senators: Focus on National issues not impeachment

President Jonathan has asked the Nigerian Senators who are allegedly plotting to impeach him to focus on National issues rather than the planned impeachment process against him.

In a letter signed by his Special Assistant on Publicity, Dr Doyin Okupe, President Jonathan said their attention should be more focused on things like the war against terror and stabilizing the economy. Find the full text of President Jonathan's letter to the senate after the cut...

RE-PURPOTED GATHERING OF IMPEACHEABLE OFFENCES BY SOME SENATORS
The Senate in the last four years has conducted its legislative functions and responded to issues that are of great national importance with commendable political sagacity.

In this same period, the senate has functioned as a stabilizing force within the polity employing much political maturity that is required to guide and protect our nascent democracy. However, confrontation and strong disagreements are not uncommon phenomenon in Executive-Legislative relationship world-wide.

The recent purported attempt by some Senators to prepare impeachable offences against the President, as reported in some section of the Media, is seen by us in this light. We strongly trust and believe in the leadership of the present Senate and the unwavering patriotism and commitment that have been shown by the distinguished members and we trust that ultimately it is this tendency towards true Nationalism that will prevail in the Senate.

It is our view that there are at present, serious fundamental issues of National importance such as winning the war against terrorism and stabilizing the economy in the face of dwindling oil revenue which requires the full attention, commitment and swift action of distinguished members of the Senate. We are of the opinion that all matters political can and will be resolved politically in the overall interest of our democracy and the wellbeing of our people.

SIGNED
Dr. Doyin Okupe,
Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs

  18. If its time he leaves the seat of presidency then the impeachment would work but if his time isn't up there's actually nothing that can be done then! on the other hand I think for now all hands should be on deck in tackling the insecurity issues in Nigeria..that should be our priority now. 49. If President Azikiwe Jonathan had focused on national issues, like electricity generation that he promised would be done within four years, like the second Niger bridge he promised within four years, like fight corruption and not define it as mere stealing, like stop crude oil theft perpetrated by his friends and brothers alike, like provide security, like solve the issue of petroleum scarcity, like not looting 1.7trillion Naira in the name of oil subsidy, like failing to remit $20billion to the Central bank, like not wasting and looting almost $75billion saved by President Obasanjo, like stop the incessant killing of innocent people by murderous terrorist in Northeastern Nigeria because the first duty of government is the protection of lives and properties, like not destroying the economy of Nigeria the way he has done, the education system, health, transportation, failure to provide jobs etc. I don’t think anybody would think of impeachment at all.

  63. GEJ sycophants and fanatics are the problem he has,we have more animals than we have humans in Nigeria. Enter the streets, take public public transport and listen to the normal Nigerian man speak, just listening to wazobia FM now, come and here people saying riches is better than good name, that it is good to steal and buy the crowd later. These are the animals we see as humans, no value for human life.

Where I fault GEJ from the very first day is the issue of subsidy. Can a sane person buy drums to fetch water from his neighbours if the borehole in his house go bad as the lasting solution?

I quite agree these things didn't start today with GEJ,it has been happening since, but using money to fund sure-p instead of signing pacts to build refineries. Now in the next four years we will be N155billion for oil subsidy yearly if GEJ is still in office.

If corruption is not checked, sorry we are going to have a country too hot for any leader to handle.

  64. Our President is a jester. What does he know about focus? The Chibok girls had been taken for months before he focused on getting them back. CBN Governor Sanusi had a few months left in his contract before the President focused on removing him against the law. Many lives had been lost a day earlier in Nyanya before he went to Kano to focus on a political rally. Look my friend, the security issues and the bad state of economy aren't new. We wouldn't be here in the first place if the President had focused on them. Shior!

See, he should be very grateful to this legislators yes because they have palled him for too long and its not good for democracy the stability of the nation is his duty and not the legislators. He alone appoints IG, ARMY CHIEFS and others he is the president of the country if he dosent no his duties he should resigned
