Looks like they may seek the death penalty for Kano child-bride

Looks like the Kano State govt is really seeking the death penalty for 14-year-old child bride Wasila Tasi'u, who allegedly killed her 35 year old husband, Umar Sani and 3 of his friends with rat poison in the village of Unguwar Yansoro in Kano, 17 days after she was forced to marry him in April 2014.

The case was heard in court yesterday Oct. 30th and AFP's Aminu Abubakar writes that prosecutors at the High Court in Gezawa, have filed an amended complaint that charged the young girl with one count of murder over the killing. Lead prosecutor Lamido Abba Soron-Dinki said that if convicted, the charge is "punishable with death" and indicated the state would seek the maximum penalty.

Above is Sani Garba, holding a picture of his 14-year-old daughter-in-law, Wasila Tasi'u

Tasi'u entered the court wearing a cream-coloured hijab and was escorted by two policemen.
Her parents, who have condemned their daughter's alleged act, were in the public gallery -- the first time the three were in the same room since Tasi'u's arrest in April, her legal representatives said.
The English-language charge sheet was translated into Hausa for the accused by the court clerk.
Tasi'u refused to answer when asked if she understood the charges.
The case was adjourned for 30 minutes so the charges could be better explained to the defendant, but when the alleged offences were read again Tasi'u stayed silent, turned her head to the wall and broke down in tears.
"The court records (that) she pleads not guilty," Judge Mohammed Yahaya said, apparently regarding her silence as equal to a denial of the charges and adjourned the case until November 26

  3. Phew! What an unfair world we live in.
She took the laws into her hand coz the law failed to protect her.
She was given out against her wish, she felt caged, trapped and abandoned. Its quite a pity the law is quick to punish her,but was mute when she was married a child.

  4. Nigeria is really a repressive society if we condone child marriage and condemn homosexuality...I wonder how many people can see the irony here...

    1. You must not seize every opportunity, no matter how unrelated, to propagate this gay propaganda of yours. While we try to look the other way and leave you to your despicable practice, don't flaunt your abominable acts before us because, like it or leave it, homosexuality is evil & a crime in Nigeria.

  12. May God punish whomever enacted the law of marrying off a child of 14years old. God punish that child's parents also. God blessed you and you haven't even finished taking care of your responsibility and you are forcefully selling her off. a lot of Nigerians are going to hell and i really really pray they burn.

  13. Honestly, this practice of child marriage must stop.
I really do not know where to stand in this case. I would have preferred the poor girl to run away rather than kill them - that was such a large heart for a 14-year-old.

    1. Large heart you say? Hmmmm...
Used to believe a large heart connotes something good & charitable. Didn't know it could be used in a case like this...

  17. With all the girl-child marriage slavery/rape of innocent girls going on in the north none of them make headline, but when one of the girls kill out of frustration she is condemned forgetting that the parents and community who gave her out in marriage should first be condemned by the law... A foundamental problem need to be addressed first

  18. The last thing we need here in the north is the court adding more names to the list of the dead. They should sentence those cold hearted BH in prison to death and live this poor victim of circumstance alone

Not supporting the fact that the young girl killed the man her so called husband but God will punish those who forcefully gave out the girl in marriage. She is a minor and I think minor can't be jailed

  45. According to Article 6(5) of the ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights) and Article 37(a) of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, courts shall not sentence to death people who were under the age of 18 at the time when the crime was committed. This is regardless of their age at the time of trial or sentencing.

    1. you must be a big fool oh. because she's not the first to be given out for marriage at that age that makes it right abi? killing of twins was once part of the tradition somewhere, and someone with sense decided to put it to a stop. just because something is part of the tradition doesn't mean we should condone it. I can't even start to comment about your last statement, clearly you are delusional. i pity your family members.
