Shock photos: Liberian woman found hanging in Lagos

Earlier today I shared a pic here of a suspected suicide victim in the Magodo area of Lagos. The woman found hanging from the tree in the early hours of today September 12th on Bankole Street, Isheri-Oke, Lagos has been identified as a Liberian woman simply called Kate.

According to Punch, the woman was a worker in a sachet water factory before she killed herself. A resident of the area said people in the area started to distance themselves from her after the outbreak of Ebola in Lagos which was brought into the country by a Liberian. They also started avoiding her because of her ill health, a situation believed to have frustrated her enough to commit suicide.
"We see her in this neighbourhood every day. I used to see her every day in the dress she died in.She always looked sick but people stopped selling to her after the Ebola outbreak. It could be because she was Liberian and looked sickly. This might have frustrated her.”

  27. This is really sad if she actually killed herself due to stigmatization from her Neighbors. This is what the Lagos State government is talking about, stop this EVD discrimination, haba. She dint choose to come from Liberia, anyone of us could have come from the EVD Countries. When Nigerians were being quarantined outside the country during EVD outbreak in Nigeria that was brought in by the Liberian -American (Late Sawyer) we all cursed the whites so why do the same to a fellow African who probably has been resident in Nigeria before EVD outbreak in her country. People cursed the Oil and Gas company where Denis Late Nurse fiancee worked when he tested positive to EVD because of the same discrimination because he is Nigerian, but, this Woman who we are not sure she has the Virus was been treated that way.We should grow up and learn to accommodate people. Later we will be abusing the government but we the citizens are worse. May her soul rest in peace. Helen

  38. This is so sad. How can this happen? Did she choose to be a citizen of Liberia. Why are Nigerians so swallow minded. Her been from Liberia does not make her EVD positive nauh. God why are some Nigerians so wicked then later we accuse our government when in the actual fact this wickedness is in born.

This is what Lagos State government is talking about DISCRIMINATION!!!! Please Governor Fashola should start arresting people for this.

When Nigerians were being quarantined at international airports when they travel out of the country, we cursed the whites but now we do same to our own follow Africans.

When the Oil and Gas company Denis (Late Nurse fiancee) worked with were not relating with him, we cursed and said it was unfair. But now we stigmatize a fellow black (African) who we are not sure has EVD just because she is from Liberia.

Why can't we learn to love others, if we her neighbors were not sure of her status they should have told the government and she too could have been on the watch list and they will be able to confirm if she has it or not.

Okay lets say she actually had EVD what about her co-tenants are they not at risk too. Foolish and senseless neighbors later they will say they are educated or that they do not want to die.

  56. @ Anon 1.50pm, you said my mind. i looked at the picture and wondered how on earth she was able to get up on the tree and over the gutter without the help of a chair or ladder? or in the event she kicked it away (ladder or stool/chair)it is not seen in the picttures. It is highly unlikely somebody took time to move the evidence since all and sundry were scared of her. Looks to me like she was ''assisted to the grave'' by some unscrupulous elements who thought they were doing the society a favor by getting rid of her. This smacks of MURDER and not suicide. RIP to the departed and may God forgive her killers.

  57. Please lets stop rejecting people, and if we find anything wrong with someone,we should please call the appropriate authority and Stop Stigmatization...It kills

  66. now i see d reason y lagos state govt put that penalty in place. people drove this woman to her death. but then again no one wants to die. sawyer shld be blamed for this, cos he deliberately brought ebola to nigeria

    ReplyDelete
  67. The really sick thing to me is people gathering there and discussing or staring not minding that the body is exposed to even children! Are we really that disconnected from humanity?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Clearly this woman was murdered and later hung to make it look like a suicide. How did that old woman climb up that tree and what did she stand on before jumping off? And people who keep blaming Sawyer are not serious. If he was resident in the US why would you all think that he would come to Nigeria for treatment? My belief is if he hadn't slumped at our airport on his way to the US no one would have known anything. What else do u want his wife to say? That yes her husband was trying to bring Ebola to the US?
