"We are starving & dying" - Bayelsa students in Russia say they've not received stipends in 14 months

24 medical students from Bayelsa state who are currently in Russia on scholarship from the Bayelsa state government yesterday August 4th held a protest in Kursk, Russia where they cried out over the non payment of their scholarship allowance in the last 14 months by the Bayelsa state Scholarship Board.

During the protest, the students said for the past 14 months, they have not received their allowances for books, medicals and even for winter clothing and coats for the 20 degree Kursk winter. Continue

They say several letters written by them to the Bayelsa state scholarship board, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, the Governor of Bayelsa state, the Ministry of Education, and the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State have not yielded any result. They alleged that were actually threatened by the chairman of the Bayelsa State Scholarship Board, Evang. Hon. Foster Ogola, that they would be sent home if they continue to protest or complain.

The students in the video posted by Sahara Reporters said since they have been abandoned by their state government, they have tried working on farms and other places in a bid to make money for their upkeep but were arrested by the Russian police who said their Visa's do not permit them to work. They say as it stands now, they are likely not to resume for the next session in September since their fees have not been paid.

One of the students Amadanyo Adebapreye who spoke with Sahara reporters said
"For a very long time now we have been going through really difficult financial situations and mentally challenging conditions due to non-payment of our tuition fees and 14 months without stipends. We have also tried to reach our state through the embassy of Nigeria in Moscow twice, first in February 2014, and just recently, July 14, 2014." he said.
The Nigerian Embassy in Moscow had tried to contact the state behalf of the students several times, but grew frustrated with the poor reception from the Bayelsa government.

  5. Politics is what would destroy this country. Why send them there when you know you won't be interested in keeping up with the expenses? Am sure they only awarded the scholarship in the ist place to upgrade their political profile and win peoples heart for political posts. Every damn thing is just politics. No one genuinely cares about his neighbour.Very bad. Guess they'll respond now since it has become a public issue coz that seems to be the only way to get the govt of today to do anything (if @all they do)

  13. If the state government know that they can't care for their needs, why do they have to sent the boys to face this hardship? The Governor will go to media and claim to have sponsored 24 medical students...

  30. This is sad. They have also not sent students in UK their allowance. Why offer scholarship when the money is not available. Its been more than 10months and I have not received anything my personal savings I brought with me from Nigeria will soon be exhausted and my Landlord will soon kick me out. I cant even afford to eat cos every money I have goes to rent.

  31. The President's own state has abandoned its children, causing them to be ashamed and destitute in such an inhospitable country like Russia.

Add poverty to racism and harsh winters, plus prospects of NO JOBS when they return, and I feel sorry for them. I bet some of the ladies have turned to prostitution to survive, and I don't blame them.

When America is pulling out all the stops and ignoring countless thousands to save TWO of its citizens from Ebola, Nigeria is busy withholding money rightfully allocated to YOUNG people studying MEDICINE.

This country gives me fresh reasons to be disgusted every day. May God help us all.

  39. This is mu issue with governance in Nigeria. Change of govt and no more continuity. because they change governor should not be a reason for student scholarship payment to be stop, even if they got they scholarship through no man, this is a common symptom in Nigeria.

  47. It's really sad and sickening the rot in the Bayelsa state government. Why a bunch of old men would wake up everymorning and think of how to starve the younger generation is just heart breaking. This issue of financial aid to students has been going on since former governor sylva's period. They should just tell Bayelsans they don't want to sponsor their children again instead of promising them water inside basket!

Meanwhile the dumb governor (Dickson) is busy gallivanting around the world collecting best governor's awards from bunch of sachophants.

THE BEST GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR !!! AND THE WINNER IS SERIEKI DICKSON! What a shame!!

  50. Not to rain on your parade, but the real problem is that they should have been sent on scholarship to schools in Nigeria. It would have been way cheaper. Or are there no longer medical school in Nigeria? The extra money would then have bn used to provide facilities to the schools to improve the standard of education in the country.

    ReplyDelete
  51. LMFAO...thats Nigeria for you...with a useless govt that cant look after its own. Soon blessing okagbare will be poached for non payment...sad but realistic

  53. I am abroad too and I have four Bayelsans in my class and I know what is going on. Those students have not been paid because they breached their contract to return an agreed percentage to their payer. The names of the qualified students are replaced with the names of these students you see here, with the agreement that for every monthly pay they get, they 'settle' the person that included their names. They have refused to pay that is why their money is usually seized. The result of this very corrupt practice is that these Bayelsans do poorly in class 80% of the time. The Bayelsan government has no hand in this, trust me..... QUEEN BEE
