'I never went to university' - billionaire Folorunsho Alakija admits

One of Africa's richest women and chairman of Famfa Oil, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija yesterday August 27th revealed that she never went to a university, saying one does not need a university education to make it in life. Mrs Alakija said this while speaking with students of the University of Lagos during the 2014 UN International Youths Day in Lagos.
"I come from Ikorodu, Lagos state. I am married to a dashing young lawyer of 70 years of age and we have four grown up gentlemen and grandchildren. It has not been a rag to riches fairytale. It has not been an overnight phenomenon like some cases which you find here and there all over the world. For as long as I can remember, I had always wanted my own business. Hard work...am trying to tell you how I got to where I am if you want those billions. Hard work, diligence, persistence...days where you nearly gave up but I chose not to give up." Continue...

It would have been easy to compromise but I chose not to and I stayed focus. I could have stayed a secretary as my father desired according to his plan for me but I had bigger aspirations. I dreamt big. God strengthened me and gave me wisdom. I had a passion and burning desire to succeed. Being a secretary, a banker, a fashion icon, a cooperate promoter and printer, a real estate owner, an oil magnate, that I can assure you was no easy feat. Firm belief that what is worth doing is what doing well or not doing at all. I took charge of my life with the tools I have shared with you. I chose to become born again at the age of 40. I chose to make a covenant with God that if he would bless me I would work for him all the days of my life. I chose to hold on to the cross and look up to him every step of the way. Today additional accomplishment includes a wife of almost 40 years, a mother, grandmother, ministry, counseling, outreach, NGO Rose of Sharon Foundation for widows and Author, writer, author of several inspirational books. All I say to the glory of God. So I am 63 and I am not yet done. So what is your excuse? I never went to a University and I am proud to say so because I don't think I have done too badly. You do not have to have a University education to be able to make it so count yourselves privileged to have that education as part of the feather in your cap" she said.

Stop misleading people.what is good for the goose may not be good for the gander.its true that most of the richest people in the world dont have a degree but that doesn't mean people shouldn't get an education.what works for you may not work for someone else.when the rich without education falls sick who treats them? The doctors without education will not be able to do that.who defends them when they are in trouble? If the lawyers dont have an education they wont be able to do the job.my advice for everyone is follow your heart and do what is best for you not because someone says its good for you.

  56. Hmmmmm well said ma'am. However, will our today's society ever permeate this? The society we live in has defined success as what we call 'kpali' but we know in its true sense it shouldn't be. I would expect our govt to provide various form of schools that would help transform raw skills/talents into tangibility not necessarily 'The university'.

  59. The Bible teaches that we should love the Father more than the things of this world. According to 1 John 2:15-17, worldly things that look, feel and taste good will not last forever. Even our accomplishments will not satisfy us for long. God deserves to be first in our lives and hearts. He wants us to love Him more than earthly things. Only He can give us joy that lasts forever.

Madam, The story of how you made your money is well known - you got an oil well from late Maryam Babangida. No doubt money solves a lot of problems and makes things possible. With money flowing from oil, you can become an author, float an NGO and do lots more.

Your money came from a platter of gold - oil well. It did not come from ingenuity or entrepreneurial abilities.

    Stop deceiving the youths.

  73. My advise to young people is go to school but don't miss out on opportunities when they come. This interview is kind of misleading because if she went to school that wouldn't have changed the idea of the baba visas given oil block. Even if you give a 2 year old oil block they can become the richest in the world. Mrs Alakija has a percentage in a chevron run oil block and chevron does all the work and she collects proceeds. It's Gods work but don't act like oh don't go to school and you can make it. Madam you made use of the oppourtunity as a tailor for Mrs Banbangida and today you are the richest woman. It's same like a politician coming out and saying I have money I didn't go to school so everyone should try and go to school.

How many people do you employ? Apart from the chevron run oil block what else do you do that could have brought the money that high. You are blessed to have gotten the block. Why not setup a funding organization for young people to come up with ideas like Bill Gates and co. And reduce this interviews anyone that gets an oil block is made. Not hard work.

Inspire others don't boast of not going to school. Even if it is young Nigerian women you sponsor their ideas won't that be amazing.

You reading . You better go to school but again don't forget to jump on opportunities when you see them.

YES SHE WAS DASHED OIL BLOCK LIKE SUM MUMUS HV BEEN SAYING BUT SHE WOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN IT IF NOT FOR HER HARDWORK AT THE TAILORING SHE WAS DOING. WHEN YOU ARE GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO, BLESSINGS WILL COME YOUR WAY PLUS THE FACT THAT SHE WAS SINGLED OUT BY GOD TO DO EXPLOITS. AND THE MONEY SHE MAKES MOST OF YOU WILL NEVER MAKE HALF OF IT EVEN TILL YOU DIE IN OLD AGE SO PLS STOPPIN THE HATING AND ASK GOD TO SINGLE YOU OUT TOO. WHEN GOD SINGLES YOU OUT IT WILL SEEM AS IF YOU DID JUJU SHIKENA

Many people will be familiar with d name Bill Gate, he is never a university graduate but people go to university to study what he invented. Education only expose you but what will make you prosper is the passion and orientation of your heart. The orientation of many university students is that once they graduate they are better than carpenter meanwhile many carpenters n bricklayers labour hard to build houses n thus become landlords even before a graduate could get a job. it explains d reason for unemployment cos youths are losing vision to education. A look reference is Nigeria's wizkid, he is not a graduate but at shows he command degrees, PhD, Dr. to get up wave their hands n dance. I have read a book titled education will not put a food on your table, so if that is d case I think Nigerian youths have a lot to do on changing their orientation and start something on their own....
