Half Of A Yellow Sun Sets New Cinema Record...

Half of a Yellow Sun’ which was released into the Nigerian cinemas on the 1st of August has set a new record in box office figures. The movie is right now at the number one spot in Nigerian cinemas, ahead of Marvel Studio’s ‘Guardian of Galaxy’.

The movie has been able to surpass other box office trailblazers for first weekend figures; Last Flight to Abuja made (N8.35Million), Phone Swap (N3.72Million), Maami (N3.30Million), and The Return of Jennifer (N10Million). Continue...

The movie, featuring BAFTA award winner and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, BAFTA award winner Thandie Newton,Onyeka Onwenu, Genevieve Nnaji, O.C. Ukeje, and Zack Orji, is adapted from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's award-winning international best-seller, and is written and directed by Biyi Bandele. 1. Linda, you said the movie broke the box office record and yet, you did not write how much it has made so far. You ended up listing the figures for other movies while leaving out that of Half a Yellow Sun that purportedly broke record. This is yellow journalism at best.

    5. Chyke you've spoken my exact thoughts. How can they tell us it has broken a record without stating what it has grossed so far at the boxoffice? Oh well! I guess it is just a publicity stunt

    1. Thank you, anonymous. I am surprised at what is being hailed here as a fine movie. For 10m Dollars it looks like a washed up soap opera. There is a terrible disconnect between the persona of Tandie and the character she is FORCED to portray. There is a strained effort to have her speak Igbo - the result, pathetic. Who did the casting made a mess, quite frankly. I
have always thought Genevieve NEEDS to go for voice training - her voice lacks cadence and
for an actress that is most needful. He sentences lack soul, each comes out like dead beats. The girl sure needs an education there.

The war scene interpretation is a joke: the bomb explosions - too careful.

Then, finally, the screenplay writer approached the adaptation of the novel from the MOST LAZY perspective - love. What about the RAWNESS of war and it being the destroyer of respectable personalities and their identity constructs?

People, go and read the INTERNATIONAL reviews by New York Times, The Guardian and SEVERAL others - the reviews are bad because, it is ACTUALLY a MEDIOCRE film. However, as usual, our people are hailing mediocrity.

  19. Half of A Yellow Sets New Cinema records at the movie but we have not been told how much it grossed at the Cinemas. All I hear are the numbers of other movies but they never told us the figure for Half of A Yellow Sun. How are they making the comparison. What is wrong with these ppl.

    1. PR window-dressing. The thing is that the idiot media knows how to mesmerise its idiot audience. Tomorrow in arguments idiots will quote this stupidity with aggression. It is the Nigeria of our today where the media is gabbage and its audience, gabbage. All of them tumbling together in idiocy and led by a colony of arrogant idiots which have employed the Okukpes as spokesperson, the Tiwa Savages as role-models, and the Charley Boys as epitomes of creativity.

  21. I watched this movie on sky demand on television. I really enjoyed it. Being a child of the 70s the setting in the movie took me back in time to a post war Nigeria. The scenery was on point, I could just imagine the taste, smells and sounds of Nigeria back in the day. It's so different from what it is today. The ideologies that made Nigeria have all gone. It's really sad. I must say that watching the movie which I did 3 times over yesterday I sort of realised why the nigerian government was a bit uneasy about this movie. But they needn't have worried because the old Nigeria is dead and in its place is the wannabe hip hop, jolly jolly naija generation who don't understand or really care about their rights. The naija government has seen to that with the Dis education of new generations of Nigerians. Kudos to the directors of this beautifully portrayed movie, reminding us that can remember what Nigeria was all about.

  31. The movie a waste of precious time. It was an activity without the soul of nigeria. The story was produced by non nigerians. I think nollywood ought to produce its own nigerian version of 1/2 of a yellow sun. With nigerians who know how dance, shout, and wail when the need arises. We couldn't even feel the pain of war.

  32. linda i think u shld make ur researches right.half of a yellow sun can neva be beta than guardians of the galaxy.

  33. This is actually a MOVIE and not pantomime. So please don't waste your time if all you are looking for is some brainless performances to help kill of more of your brain cells. An excellent depiction of a nigerian era long gone , quite felasque. Unfortunately wasted on the uneducated minds of a congregation of baboons. Like throwing pearls to pigs.
