Videos like this and Dorobucci are a big disappointment, yet Nigerians still complain about why the outside world does not view or value us as human beings. How can they when we don't even love ourselves?
DeleteArtists, especially musicians, owe it to themselves and their country to promote Africa as much as possible. Not flying to cape town or London to use mixed or white chics, as if nothing good comes from your country. Why then complain that western media only shows negative sides of Africa when our own artists don't help by promoting everything else but Africa and Africans. Do these people even patronize your music? 99% of your fans are black Africans as a matter of fact. This mentality is why Nigeria will NEVER change.
People saying they see nothing wrong with this clearly don't see how deep this issue is. I SHAKE MY HEAD in disgust at you all. I simply don't support such artists. Those latina and white women can buy their music, not me.

I generally have a cae against the objectifying of women in music videos that we are not really needed, just there to jiggle our stuff. But the issue is this: How many white people do you see using black girls in their music videos? We africans are showing day by day that we do not love ourselves, that light or white is more beautiful, that our hair is 'ugly'(we even found a way to call it 'due'), we make fun of people with flat or bulbous noses(a feature that is basically african) I mean come on. There is something definitely wrong here. We have been bombarded with western standards of beauty that african women may never be able to meet up with without some sacrifices(and consequences). Wizkid using light girls is just a tip of the iceberg.

Sometimes these videos are shot based on the idea/inspiration behind the song.We don't know that in this case.Also that may be his own way of properly delivering the video.The issue would have been him using light skinned/bleached African girls thereby encouraging other girls to follow suit. Its just an inherent character for humans to find faults in what ever you do. ReplyDeleteI was watching MTV base's throw back recently and I beautiful's video by pharell and snoop dog and then I saw how they portrayed black girls so well even though the video was shot in Brazil. The camera real focused on one very dark girl in bikini. I have also realized that most black american artist use black girlz in their video, infact they mix both black and white girls.. Back to the matter; inferiority complex dey do most of our artist, they believe they have made it when they use white girlz, it gives them a sense of achievement. I don't blame them after all the white skin is seen as superior to the black skin. They shuld change their perspective.

ReplyDeleteThe level of ignorance displayed in some of the comments here is disgraceful. They reflect the unfortunate lack of understanding among many Nigerians of the impact of visual images and media messages on the psyche and developing self-worth of young people.
ReplyDeleteWhat Wizkid has done matters because of the message that he has chosen to send to the young Black girls and boys that are his fans across Africa and the Black Diaspora. In the past decade or so, Nigerian musicians have become more and more influenced by their African-American counterparts and thus, we have seen their videos being increasingly populated by mixed race and non-black females. This is extremely sad as many of them are clueless about the history of slavery, racism and colourism in the US of A, and how the black community there is negatively impacted by the effects of racism and colourism. For WizKid and other misguided Nigerian musicians to import this colourist mentality and project mixed race and non-black women at the expense of Nigerian (and other Black females) is very disturbing and sad.
Someone commented that only Blacks see colour. Really??!! Let’s see now, how many white artistes use only black females as dancers in their videos? WizKid used Latinas in a video shot in a city that has blacks resident in it. How many Latino musicians have used only black females in their videos? How many white South African musicians use only black South African women in their videos? Many Nigerians now spend hours watching Telemundo; how many of these Telenovellas on Telemundo have pure black women actresses in lead or even minor roles? (Note that these shows come from Latin American countries with significant numbers of black citizens.) Across all other races, men promote their people and their features. It is only Black people who seem to have a pathological need to marginalise their own women, especially if such women are dark skinned with kinky hair. And yet, we wonder why we are still the backwards branch of the human family?
All those of you who think videos like this do not matter need to learn how to connect the dots:
1) These constant music videos that show Black men idolising and elevating the beauty of other women have a negative impact on the psychology of Black females, hence, the rampant need for weaves, skin bleaching and so on.
2) The girls in the video were paid for their participation, therefore, since black musicians do not like casting them and men of other races promote their own women, dark skinned Black women dancers and actresses are left with the crumbs. SO, basically what is happening here is these black artistes rise from obscurity with the support of Black women but once they make it, they give most of the jobs to mixed race and non-black women. This used to be more of an African-American problem, but it has increasingly become one that we have to deal with here. And yet, some people think that it ‘does not matter’.
3) Whilst many Black people ignorantly sing ‘We are the World’ and think purple Unicorns that pee rainbows actually exist, the other people groups build and protect their interests at our expense. Wizkid’s video is just the tip of the iceberg. This self-hatred is reflected in the way our leaders govern our nations; the way in which business people are willing to sacrifice our interest for a few more dollars; etc. All of this is a reflection of the many ways in which we hate ourselves.
A disturbing percentage of Black people despise the way they look and that is reflected in the things they do and say. Sadly, many of these sick individuals show up in the entertainment world.
FINALLY, LADIES LEARN THE ART OF RECIPROCITY. Don’t give your support and resources to entertainers and businesses that do not support you!
@Alicia. Well said. You understand what so many of our people either do not or are unwilling to understand. Until we change our mindset and ways, Black people will continue to remain at the bottom.
