Ebola: ‘Nigerian nurse fled quarantine centre’

One of the nurses who had previously had contact with the Liberian Ebola patient Patrick Sawyer, fled her quarantine center in Lagos and returned to her home in Enugu, exposing about 20 people who she came in contact with to the deadly virus.

Information Minister Labaran Makuwho disclosed this said the nurse and the  20 others people who she came in contact with are all under surveillance in Enugu. Continue...

189 people are now being monitored in Nigeria. Three have died from the disease: Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American businessman who collapsed in Lagos, an attending nurse, and an ECOWAS staffer who worked with Sawyer.

    3. This just goes to show all the holes in the story they've been telling us. I thought they said once you start exhibiting symptoms you're too sick to move??? So how did she "move"!!! #2 how porous is the quarantine center that she was able to "flee"???? #3 we are busy monitoring airports only with our laser thermometers and stuff..... we conveniently forgot that majority of the people that came in contact with Patrick Sawyer (people like this nurse), cannot afford to shell out so much for airfare, so they are frequent "roadies". What measures are being put in place to check passengers traveling by road???

  21. Let's not be quick to judge her.It was a wrong thing for her to have fled.
It was just a response to fear. She probably knew her days were numbered. She couldn't just contain it alone. Wanted to bid her family goodbye. If only we could understand what she might be going through.
What about the security that should be watching over her, were their senses quarantined as well?.Pfft

  27. Its just so shameful we have a government that is nonchalant. So the minister wasn't ashamed to tell Nigerians someone under surveillance escaped quarantine center... So the gates of the center were left widely open for people to leave at will??? without security o something??...........its shameful. Securities to that facility should be detained and investigated immediately, and most of those in-charge of the facility should be investigated for conspiracy and replaced. Am really not sure the government is doing enough to checkmate the spread of the virus, and for their info ZMAPP is out of stock and IT'S NOT YET BEEN EVALUATED FOR SAFETY IN HUMANS.

  52. Please don't call her selfish. Do you know under which conditions they are being quarantined? WHO and standard health laws stipulate that quarantined individuals should be 3 ft away from each other? How is that possible in that small tent? The same attendants attending to the infected are taking their samples frequently to test for ebola. They use the same public outdoor toilet. When an ebola carrier uses the toilet, how well is this decontaminated before an ebola free person uses the same public outdoor toilet? Who is cooking their food? How did someone who never came close to the Nigerian index patient, test positive weeks after being quarantined? I think we should all just pray that this disease goes away, because no one will know what they would do if found under the same conditions. Even now, I am sure some of you would have relaxed a bit on the sanitizing measures that you had initially embarked on. How do we expect these health officials to be perfect and operate under the strictest sterile conditions possible when dealing with quarantined individuals. Afterall they are human

Like quite a lot of people I am very suspicious of this new disease that made its way into Nigeria very inexplicably? The sudden rise in the number of new victims does not correlate with the life cycle of the disease. I do believe that the real danger is In the vaccine. Biological warfare.

You count all those people. The 20 people shook hands with, and hugged her. Some of them also hugged other people. Someone else sat on that same seat she vacated in the bus. So, according to Ebola matters, has she reached the infectious state? She wanted to go and meet her Babalawo pastor. The guy for run.

  86. Just reading all these comments here shows that Nigerians are still so ignorant about the disease called Ebola. Quarantine is for people who have come close to an infected person to see if they will develop symptoms after 2-21 days. Isolation is for those that are already SICK. Being quarantined does not mean you are sick. Its been past 21 days since anybody came in contact with Patrick Sawyer. If the Nurse was sick she would not be strong enough to walk talk less of escaping. It its been past 21 days why is still being kept under surveillance? Would anyone of you agree to be kept under lock and key forever with possible real sick patients increasing your chance of getting infected? Please lets all take time to inform ourselves about this disease. we read Linda Ikeji blog everyday. Read up on Ebola!
