Sheikh's son, 5 others killed as police and protesters clash in Zaria

About 5 people, including the son of popular Zaria based Sheikh, Ibraheem El Zakzaky, were killed today after a clash between Nigerian soldiers and Shiite Muslims in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The Shi'a Muslim group had gathered in the PZ area of the town for their annual Ramadan ritual called Muzahara, where thousands of Muslim faithful march around the city dressed in black to protest a cause. They dedicated their march today to the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

A source said the group were confronted by soldiers as they gathered after Friday prayers, chanting Islamic songs, carrying placards and condemning Israel's invasion of Gaza. The soldiers' mission was to disperse the crowd but one thing led to another and violence erupted. Shots were fired and at least 6 people were killed, including the son of the leader of the Islamic group (the son pictured above).

    Some people could be so stupid, what do u mean asking what their business was with Gaza?? those in Gaza are oppressed human beings, every right thinking human wt a good heart would express their solidarity and most people around the world are showing their solidarity towards this guys. Imagine that Palestinians are prevented from stepping on Jerusalem which does not belong to Israelis. Their borders are closed, they can't trade they can't pass freely. I am a christian residing abroad but I joined in the solidarity match, pls be nice, just tht u are not in their place does't mean they should be left alone in this. They are oppressed because Israelis belief Palestinians are poor as such are lesser beings.Now u tell me this, why do westerners have to help us with her problems in Africa? why does Bill gate have to pay billions to produce polo vaccines for Africans? pls be reasonable try and think through before you comment.

    Zaria, welcome to the experience of Ogoni, Odi and Umuechem communities in Rivers State when they protested to have a small piece of their oil wealth the last two decades. At least you now know how it feels to be murdered by authorities because you wanted to express your anger. THe problem though in this case is that you didnot even die protesting for something that directly affects you. Sigh.
