Photos: Sudanese woman Meriam Ibrahim meets the Pope

Sudanese woman, Meriam Ibrahim, who flew into Italy this morning in company of her husband Daniel Wani and their two children Martin and Maya, met with Pope Francis at Casa Santa Martath inside the Vatican.

According to the head of the Vatican Press Office, Father Federico Lombardi, the meeting took place in a 'very serene & affectionate' environment, and Pope Francis thanked Meriam for her 'courageous witness to perseverance in the Faith.'

Fr. Lombardi said Meriam thanked the Pope for his prayers, saying they provided great support and encouragement to her during her ordeal. See more photos after the cut...

  39. she looks like a man. thank God for the freedom. life is full of surprises. i cant wake up 2day, pick ma bags, board a plane to italy nd tell the security men at vatican that i wanna see the pope or i wanna make a confession, or i want the pope to touch ma forehead. Guess they will lock me up and say i ate the wrong food in Nigeria, even the pope wont even no i came to see him. but look at this woman from no where and her grass turned into grace. i want to believe that she never thaught that she'll be this popular. now from her sad story, the pope knows her, Obama knows her, Asia knows her, and you and I know her. so NEVER give up on yourself. that thing that you think you are doing or fighting for and you feel you are not popular or your voice wont be heard. continue doing it and pray and the lord will lift you up

  58. More people would denounce their faith and hope to get such help. It will start with one and many will follow.

If all of us can give a helping hand to those who are persecuted, it would give many the courage to make a move not just on religion but as well as the social ills of our time.
