Lagos state okays six-month maternity leave, 10 days for fathers

Lagos state government has introduced a new leave regime for all male and female civil servants in the state. Henceforth, all male civil servants whose wives give birth are entitled to a 10-day paternity leave while female civil servants had their maternity leave extended from 3 months to 6 months.

The new leave regime was announced today by the Lagos State Head of Service, Mrs Josephine Williams at a press conference held at the Baguada Kaltho Press Centre, in Alausa, Ikeja.
"A female officer shall be entitled to 24-weeks maternity leave with full pay in case of her first two deliveries. The said leave shall commence, at least two weeks before the expected delivery date; a male officer, to who a new baby (or babies in case of multiple births) is born shall be entitled to 10 working days" she said.
She added that subsequent deliveries after the second baby by any employee will only get 12 weeks maternity leave for a female officer while the men will not be entitled to the 10-day leave.

Special adviser to the Lagos state Governor on public health, Dr Yewande Adeshina, said the 6 months leave will enable women complete the mandatory months required for breastfeeding new born babies.

Good of them to put the men into consideration, we need rest too coz the amount of protein lost during creation is quite much.

    3. Thank you very much anon 11:54pm! Exactly my thoughts when I saw the time allowance for men. They already have time to aggressively run after girls while their wives are heavily pregnant or home with a new born when they weren't even given any days off at work. Now that they're being given days off....... Lord help us.

  14. This is a welcome idea, but six months is too much, the private companies will never accept this and why just 10 days for the men? what is the family do not have any one to assist, will the man use only 10 days to help the wife at home?

  23. And what is Dr.yewande insinuating????. That it is only the first and second new borns that deserves 6 months baby breastfeeding. I don't thing its a good reason for initiating this, though the idea is really nice.

  45. All you shallow minded peeps talking about gender equality and it not being fair for the man, what will a man be doing 4 6 full months without going to work? Even the ten days sef and some of them will start fretting. Men are naturally sole providers. They like waking up each day and doing something important. I applaud this decision, in as much as it'll have its merits and demerits. It was a wise one. Kimmypraise@gmail.com

  47. For all those wishing this would be extended to the private sector let me spin this around. Assuming you owned your own business would you pay 6 months salary to a woman who is away on maternity and is not generating any income for your business?

  57. the potential danger here is that employers will stop employing young or newly married women.....I welcome this because it's what obtains in developed countries.....but this should have come hand in hand with laws against discrimination against women.....age should be banned from being written on cvs, sex, etc...
