Gender discrimination at Spice Lounge. Kemi Adetiba tells her story

TV personality/music video director Kemi Adetiba tells of how she was turned back when she went to dine at Spice Restaurant and Lounge on Adeola Odeku in Victoria Island yesterday because she was alone but the restaurant allowed single men to enter. How stupid is this? See more of what she wrote after the cut...

Oh kemi its not a first! My female friend n I went to hv a late lunch at churassco (dunno if I spelt that right) and we were refused service, after seating for like 30 minutes we had to leave, its funny cos two more couples came in n they were attended to, me thinks that they feel young ladies eating alone are lookin for magas or sugar daddies, but thats really silly

  15. That was how I had a date with my bf at Radisson blu and I arrived earlier than him. The kept me at the gate for so long and wouldn't let me drive past the gate until I call who I'm there to see to come identify me. My bf drove in about 30mins later. Needless to say the drama that ensured that day was no childs play. They eventually apologised though and claimed the security guard was new.

Those managing Spice Lounge take such "Measures" to ensure their Business Premises are not taken over by Runs Girls/Ashawo. It's a simple measure High-Brow Eateries/Restaurants take to keep their Business premises in check.

Kemi should understand simple measures like this and stop seeking unnecessary attention. Atleast she was allowed in after introducing herself.

I have been married for 12 years but every now and then my friends both married and single like to hang out for some girl time.

    5. Preposterous! At this globalised and sexually equalised age and time? This is outright discrimination of the highest degree. I think Kemi should sue, I mean a legal action should be imposed on them. This is only getting this much awareness because the victim is a celeb, how many more respectable ladies have been so humiliated and publicly mutilated by this Spice lounge and co. They should have been aware that pulling a move like this is publicity suicide in this socially driven media age.

Many highbrow restaurants bounce unaccompanied ladies to ensure that their place of business does not turn to an ashawo haven- not judging these ladies in the world's oldest profession though as our economy and ignorance are not helping issues at all at all. 34. I think she is over reacting. It is a standard policy for a lot of big restaurants abroad not to allow single or unattached ladies into the facility. It is aimed at curbing soliciting and other such practices if you know what I mean.

This EXACTLY what we accuse our leaders/politicians of -ABUSE OF POWER/POSITION. At this level and influence you have you are so ready to use negatively; wonders what you will do if given a bigger platform! Not allowing single ladies in is Spice Restraurant biz plan and I think he has the legal and moral right to chose any biz plan he wants so long he isnt breaking any law. In Europe there are malls that are strictly for nudes, there are clubs that are strictly for gays... So pls Kemi what you about to do is WRONG and in my understanding ABUSE OF POWER...

The guy said no that it is because I am alone, that single girls are not allowed in the evening.
I was beyond pissed, I asked "so I can't casually take myself out and have dinner" , they said no, that have to come with a guy it's a policy..
Long story short, they had to call my friend from the gate and he confirmed I was meeting him up so they let me in...
Funny thing, I have a car now and I drove to Southern sun at around 10pm and they let me in without questions. Lol

  66. Well Nigeria is basically a stupid country with a few reasonable folks. The fundamental human rights of people are not respected so what do you expect? I just listened to Obasanjo grant an interview and he said 'Nigeria is a not a secular country but a multireligious country. I would rather see a religious person than an atheist'. What happened to tolerance and respect for people' s choices as long as they are not a danger physically to themselves or others. Hate speech leads to prejudice which leads to ignorant discriminatory acts which lead to xenophobia or racism or tribalism/ ethnocentric snobbery which may lead to murder or suicide. Hence advanced countries nip hate speech in the bud .it all starts with a thought that becomes generalized. A fellow doctor told me that her mother told her that ''Ibo people eat their children in New York and I asked her, what did you say to your mum to correct that impression- she said nothing, and I said 'you never corrected that impression or nipped it in the bud, sad'. To assume that a single woman going into a restaurant is a 'loose girl' is not only illogical but also is a cognitive distortion. When we get ridiculed for having an obsolete curriculum in our schools we get upset but it is true.these are basic things that are picked up in school even if we want to believe 'older ones at home are a product of their times'. Unfortunately many Nigerians don't like to listen to the truth until events like Chibok happen. Meanwhile 59 boys were killed in a school months before and Jonathan sat like a weakling.

It's more to do with protecting their customers and making sure they are not being harassed by runs girl than anything about inferiority or about how girls who are not married are low. I'm sure they didn't think it this way when they implemented the rule. After all, even the girls that are entering with men..half of them haven't even smelt a serious relationship not to talk of marriage. 80. Blame your specie for the troubles, too many prostitutes harassing patrons at many of those places.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Everybody that abused nigeria here because of kemis experience has just shown that:
    1) you didn't go to school.
    2) even if you did,you bribed your way through.
    3) even after 1 & 2 you are still not smart.
    4 ) you don't think b4 u speak...
Because restaurants are not stupid, they are open to make money.when a restaurant says no single girls, there must be a good reason for it.there are scores of runs girls in lagos, some even go to places just to meet some rich men.sometimes a serious rich man just wants to sit and eat without ashawo trying to shadow them.thats how come rules like that.Kemi is just unlucky they didn't recognize it becos there are times when restaurants break rules if they know some1 has integrity and is just there to eat...and who asked why didnt the bouncer know diff.btw ashawo and serious girl? you are funny!! Is there really a diff.btw a runs girl and a normal responsible girl? Of course not..every1 wears good weaves and wears the best shoes and clothes.these days you can never tell anymore.even decent girls look like Runz girls, with all the fake hair, eyelashes, etc.good fine dinning restaurants in Nigeria and everywhere around the world have those rules.I am even disappointed that kemi is complaining on social media,some1 as well travelled as she is should know better....SMH.thats the corruption we are complaining abt in Nigeria,TOM DICK & HARRY expects that rules be broken for them.its time we start to adhere to rules in this country..

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sorry Kemi that this happened to you BUT to be honest you need to see how Runs ladies and prostitutes who all by the way look clean like Kemi harass expats and married men ...The Manager is just trying to protect his customers after they complained severally to him..... She should have first request an audience with the manager instead of eating there and then coming on twitter to talk..

  84. They do this at every club. It's not just spice. If they don't know you, they will gate you. I always go to clubs with friends, usually girls. They let us in but when I first moved back to naij and they didn't know my face, they would gate me. It's not acceptable, but honestly, I don't know how they would filter real women from prostitutes.

  87. Its because of runz girls preying for men jare. They do that in some hotels too. If e dey pain u old girls, make una vex go marry, including u linda :p

    ReplyDelete
  88. If the point most of you are making is that it happened because of the amount of runs girls around. I'm sorry but do we not also have gigolos in this country. They is no good reason for that discrimination. It is just ignorance at its best.

    ReplyDelete
  89. ITS CALLED GETTING BOUNCED KEMI...DEAL WITH IT

    ReplyDelete
  90. This is a very serious matter and you guys are not seeing the negative effect of what those bouncers are doing. Four point, Radison Blu, Eko hotel does the same thing even to decent ladies who sincerely came to spend their money. I experienced it at Eko hotel and I shouted at waiter who said to me that single ladies are not allowed there at 7:30pm, I made so much noise that he started pleading, I saw guys who came there drinking a bottle of beer for an hour, I ordered for pizza and a bottle of Red wine. My sisters and I felt sad about the issue. As for those who said kemi Should go and cook her own food, should know that sometimes you just want to eat food cooked by another caterer than ur self. If you can pay ur bills then I don't see why they should put such laws, is very bad for business. These places should know how important etiquette is. Everyone who comes to patronize them is important. Have gone to places like this abroad, they don't have such attitude . Linda pls trash this issue till they learn to address ladies with respect.

    ReplyDelete
  91. So how do they take care of guys who go in there to look for ladies or even rich MEN? *hisses. They will never find me anywhere close to their door. Dumb a..holes!

    ReplyDelete
  92. That e hell like seriously nawa o

    ReplyDelete
  93. Why will they not bounce you? When all you girls do these days in to dress like runs girls and be harrassing men up and down in restaurants, bars, clubs etc.

    ReplyDelete
  94. This is pure abuse of human right and women descrimination. Whether private or otherwise.

  95. Nne go nd cook in ur house. I personally dont ve issues wt dt bcs ds lagos girls r turning into sth else dy r all runs girls including d "celebs" so my dear, if u dont ve man to c wt, u cook in ur house or better stl visit iya Basira

    ReplyDelete
  96. Lol. Happy she caught the bug too. Cos these female celebs oppress regular girls like us, in club. Just because we aren't known faces. Bia, kemi! Its not news. Many restaurants and bars on d island do not allow single ladies in. On the pretense that they are avoiding runs girls. No matter how many you are or how hot you are. Lagos sef dey try. Go Abuja! Those ones, are worse. So if this is your first experience, congrats. Some of us get this every other night or have to wait and beg a guy to take us in and sit thru their boring conversations all night just cos they helped us avoid embarrassment at d gate. Even if its your birthday, no story. Yeye dey smell!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Kemi adetiba should know better. Spice was getting overrun with prostitues cos of the white crowd so thus decision is a good one. If you're a single girl Nd want to go out alone or with your friends, call and make a reservation. No one will turn you back if you do that.

Meanwhile, I personally would never wait to be eventually let in. The shame of standing at the gate while people walk past you is bad enough. I am pretty sure it was club hours cos they will not turn anyone back during dinner.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Be the smart woman you are and be objective. Discrimination is when your basic human rights are violated or denied, acess to a privately-owned restaurant is not! That's the prerogative of the management. They probably have their reasons and it seems the lesser of many evils in light of what loose women can do to a business.I don't think any business in its right mind would close shop to a group of potential customers for no good reason.there's plenty restaurants in VI(I know atleast 5 on Adeola Odeku).if they don't want you,it's their loss not yours.no need getting personal.

    ReplyDelete
  99. that is so strange!!!!! becoz anytime me and my girls go there they get so exited at the entrance !!!that is actually how its suppose to be coz without pretty girls there ,no guys will even go there. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  103. oh Please people should STFU, its not gender bullshit discrimination or blah blah.its the fault of dem runz girls who would just come and sit and fuck all the married men that came to have fun with their guys. im a woman and I know what women can do when it comes to rich men.please Kemi take it or make your own that does not allow unaccompanied men.Spice restaurant has suffered at the hands of ashewos so I cant blame them.they are just protecting their business!

    ReplyDelete
  104. I MAY BE WRONG, BUT ITS SAID THAT THE WAY YOU DRESS DETERMINES THE WAY YOU'LL BE ADDRESSED. HOW WERE YOU DRESSES?. THE WAY MANY DRESS TODA IN THE NAME OF FREDOM OF SELF EXPRESSION CAN ONLY BRING THIS UPON THEM; BARRING THAT THE PLACE IS NOT RUN BY LITTLE MINDS. IF YOU'VE SEEN WHAT NUISANCE CSW CAN BE TO A DECENT PLACE, YOU'LL KNOW WHY THEY GO TO ABSURD LIMITS TO WARD THRM OFF.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Spot on! Why would a not-for-charity biz deny a potential 'high profile' client entry unless they were not sure of her id & hence motive for patronage?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I'm glad someone is finally addressing this. The same thing happened to me on Friday, I was about to get in with a friend who unfortunately is also a girl like me and we were literally shoved out of the way! Until my sister's boyfriend came to rescue us.

Its sad how much we have to go through as ladies in this part of the world.

  116. to whom brain is given, sense is expected.. ms adetiba aka ms accomplished, because u think highly of yourselves gives you no right to think you have got monopoly of verbal destruction.. facts over sentiment..
    1. runz girls, prostitutes and ashawos operate unrestricted in this country
    2. these girls constitute a nuisance to these restaurants/clubs ( pple like you would be the first to blast these restauranta/clubs if overrun by prostitutes).. u would say, i cant go to that bar, so many prostitues there''...simply put, they are bad business
    3. its a herculean task to differentiate ashawo from an 'accomplished' lady these days... hence the need to identify yourself where the need arises.
    4. this restaurants have high patronage due to some of these checks to ensure sure majority of their regular patrons feel comfortable not just a one time attendee...
    5. there are many single ladies that are allowed in (regular patrons).. and they will tell you they prefer such measures for their own comfort
conclusion.. its easier to sit and criticize rather than using brains over sentiments... whipping up feministic chants at every opportunity.. my dear, profer a wa out for these restautants or forever hold your peace

    ReplyDelete
  117. pls dont spoil their market there oo.its d best place i hv been so far in nigeria.probably the girl was nt well dressed or she dint look decent.if u dress like gbovo dem go address you like one.alot of single girls walk in without no issue.abeg make she go rest.

  118. Transfcorp Hilton Abuja stopped single ladies from coming to the poolside unless you're a guest or accompanied by a man..sometime ago I'm not sure if that's still stands till today...but right before that decision was made you should see what commercial sex workers turned that place to...it. Lost its class completely..I don't blame the restaurant. And Kemi should know better...

    ReplyDelete
  119. Spice Lounge not for whores . The best Club on the island is Spice Bar. They do their best to ensure rogues and sluts are not allowed into the bar. The babe dey mad for spoiling another man business. Nonsense. If you dont set standards the club will be filled with rogues and opportunist. Spice BAR is club for the Elites.

  120. Its almost as if single girls shouldn't go out and have fun! Its ridiculous.

  121. Why would you still go in after been sent back initially??? You would have just walked away. And with your area of profession, you would have asked why they send single ladies back???

    ReplyDelete
  122. You cant close his business, stop all you know from going there and so??? are you God?? see the way she talks self. go open ur own nah.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Abeg make una leave Spice Restaurant alone. Do you know how many ashewos, job girls have gone there just to sit and snatch another woman's husband? They are being responsible in my own opinion. Kemi go and look for husband. Stop ranting everywhere. Same goes to you dear Linda.

    ReplyDelete
  124. There is no gender discrimination here. Just a policy not to allow single or accompanied ladies into their place of business to prevent 'Runs Girls' from turning the place to meeting points for picking up men. Most if not all nice places in Lagos do not allow single ladies. Check and you will notice that places that allow single ladies have turned to 'Runs spots' as runs girls have taken over the place. immediately serious and professional men notice the caliber of single women around, they usually stop coming. Don't blame the business from trying to protect their investment.

    ReplyDelete
  125. First off, it's a big enough embarrassment to be stopped on such flimsy grounds. To leave would be to accept the injustice of it. This happened to me at Golden Tulip hotel in Ghana years back and I fought it till I was let in.

This so-called policy is the height of double standards. Would she have been let in if she were married but unaccompanied? What's to say the unaccompanied male clientele do not end up soliciting or being solicited by others inside? I agree with the person who said this joint should boldly declare a couples only policy if that's the way they want to go and stop victimizing and stereotyping women.

    ReplyDelete
  126. The Ushers / Bouncers didn't know you. sowie. They thot ur a runs girl.

    ReplyDelete
  127. It is a BIG DEAL...
Linda please call them out, they practice this gender discrimination at night clubs as well particularly Sip and that eatery turned lounge turned Night Club (The Place in V.I) , A group of girls are not let in but a group of boys... very well then.
What are they protecting???? They say they are trying to discourage prostitution by encouraging homosexuality and disrespecting females.

That i won't be allowed into a lounge/restaurant/club because i am a woman alone or with female friends. Whats next?? they won't let us drive or eat in public, they will stop us from working, this thing should not be taken with a pinch of salt, its little actions like this that encourage men to disrespect women and it could escalate to something else.

The worst part is some women stoop so low as to beg guys to walk in with them. Its appalling and embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Isnt this action similar to that of Boko haram? lolzzzz after they would go on social media condemning boko haram.... why on earth is there segregation? is the owner from Saudi Arabia ....? please relocate abeg

  132. saw so many comments that show how little some women think of themselves. there should be absolutely no excuse for discrimination against single or unaccompanied women. either you make it a couples only place or you can even ask for identification. Prostitutes have to eat food as well and is that saying there are no male prostitutes in Nigeria. who is fooling who. Also, if there was no demand for their service they would stop supply. abi

  136. I am surprised at this. As a matter of fact, I was right behind her when the bouncers requested to check her purse. He reluctance led to exchange of words. Funny thing is, she was with her friends who all complied. Pls things like this should be verified before being published. Spice Route is one of the best joints on the Island with the right see of crowd. No gender discrimination whatsoever.

    ReplyDelete
  137. I am never surprised at responses from Nigerians a lot of the time. Agreeing that because the establishment does not want to encourage prostitution makes it ok for single men to go in and not women!! What makes you think in this day and age, that the men are not also prostituting themselves to men and women. If they are worried about that, then staff should be trained to be more vigilant about such practices and how to handle these situations and not turning away customers for the sake of it.
