    3. How do you know that the Yoruba hating girl is Igbo?

I've noticed this so many times. Whenever an anonymous person makes an uncomplimentary remark about Yoruba's, they automatically assume the person is Igbo.

      I'm neither Igbo nor Yoruba.

    1. Linda, tribalism and racism are two different things. In tribalism, you prefer your fellow ethnic person over someone from another ethnic group. While in racism, you look down on another race. You feel you are too superior to anybody who's not from your race.

Sterling did what he did because he feels that black people are inferior to the whites, he considered himself far more superior to blacks and felt it would be condescending to have blacks in his game.

Though the two vices are starkly different, both are wrong and should be discouraged.

  24. Yes Linda he is 101% right. We are so bad even within the major tribes. In Ibo tribe, Anambra man will never marry from Imo or any other state. Their tribalism and illiteracy know no bound.

    ReplyDelete

    1. When u say Anambra ppl prefer to marry their own than others I agree 100%, but when u associate Anambra with illiteracy then u know nothing about Anambra ppl. Most of the ppl that made the Igbo race to stand out in Academics, Business, and many other professions are Anambra ppl. That's the truth u can't deny no matter how hard u try.

  29. Without mincing words,Ali Baba is on point,a good percentage of us are relatively tribalistic,we have come to a point were we do this consciously and unconsciously, more so i know some good christian folks, spirit filled and all,who would not allow themselves to date(let alone marry)anyone that is not of the same tribe, they are already programmed by Daddy and mummy to think, reason and breathe in this way.Tribalism is somewhat second nature in naija, though we have many wonderful exceptions,to this unconscious rule,my folks are from different tribal backgrounds, and i towed the same line, enjoying every bit of it.

  44. Linda,Nigeria is a very tribalisiic nation.Let me ask you Linda would you agree to Marry an Hausa man???I don't tink u will ever wanna marry even a northerner. So 90 percent of Nigerians and tribalistic.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Are we a "tribalistic" nation? Yes we are. But a tribalist is completely different from being a racist . they are both form of prejudice, but tribalism is about a difference in culture and heritage , while racism sees other human race as less than human - animals to be precise. so on this note i totaly disagree with Alibaba on this.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This is very true. Especially in LAGOS yoruba landlords will say they don't want Igbo tenants. My neighbour had to change her name to Funmi just to secure accommodation whereas, her real name is Ngozi........

  58. YES, YES, YES I am sick of the tribalistic comments, and politics. Damn we blacks are more racist than whites. We so hate each other, that it is pathetic. Even with Nigeria going to the dogs, people on these blogs continue to spew hate and bigotry. How can anyone like nigerians when we hate ourselves. ReplyDelete
  67. hahahaha, well,he may be right, for instance i personally hate Hausas cos of their animalistic behavior i.e boko haram, not all hausas anyway and i cant marry an igbo girl due to our cultural differences which may reflect in our relationship but that doesnt mean i hate igbos....am not a racist though....But in the case of sterling i guess it was more of the white colour superiority...

To buttress that fact...look all the organisations formed in the north, the OPC,the Ndi Igbo etc. These are tribalistic organisations whose primary intention is to promote self tribe rather than national oneness. 107. Tribalism and Rasicm are cut from the same cloth. You should hear what stereotypes certain tribes have created against each other. If I don’t date you, give you a job or vote for you because you are hausa, efik, igbo, yoruba or idoma, it means I feel you are inferior to me. So racism and tribalism are very similar

    ReplyDelete
  124. Linda, sincerely a lot of us are. My dad is Yoruba, my mum is Hausa and the amount of prejudice towards my mother that came from my dad's side during the early parts of their marriage was unbelievable and would've probably had continued had my father not had enough. Thank God they're still together.

I know of other families that aren't so lucky. Some won't allow their children marry people from other tribes because of certain beliefs. All in all, Ali Baba has a huge, huge point.

  125. I think we Nigerians are one of the most tribalistic nations in the world.yes I agree with Alibaba

    ReplyDelete
  126. Yes I agree with Alibaba, unfortunately; we are a tribalistic country. Nigerian's two major problem aside poverty and corruption is tribalism and religion. Linda, you will be amazed to hear some certain things still happen in this country. I weep for Nigeria sometimes, cos even education has not changed anything. Even in our voting, people are sentimental. They will vote for you because you are share their belief I once told a friend that Nigerian's problem will end only if we are truely one Nigeria. I will vote for someone I know will perform irrespective of tribe and religion, marry because of love, employ someone to an organization because of their qualification and experience. I intend to start an NGO to foster Nigeria when I get the money/attain my goal in life.

  135. Yes we are no question about it. And maybe once it can be looked into, maybe we could have a headway.

  136. Linda, you know now. Not with all those back and forths between LIBers we see anyime anything tribal comes up. The sad part is that our different tribes are more tolerant and closer to one another outside the country. We are roommates, study together, besties, discuss our future plans and aspirations with one another and work towards our goals together. But once we get back to Naija, the cracks of tribal divide start to show in relationships and friendships. It's quite sad, and as we all know; charity, they say begins at home. We should all be able to live in togetherness and oneness, start our charity from home and take it out there, not the other way around only to drop it by the front door on our way back in..... 137. Yes!!! A nation where Christians look at Muslim as their enemy, Hausas cant marry Igbos , Yorubas hate Igbos with passion and Igbos cant associate with Hausas and Vise verser.

  138. We might pretend not to be but this country is divided by tribal lines and it has worsened with this religious crisis all over the country. And not even between tribes, some tribes even discriminate each other.

  139. This is a very true statement!!! There are deeply entrenched ethnic cleavages!!

  140. We all agree with Alibaba so how do we stop tribalism and no opinion on how to stop it . If each us try not to be tribalistic in our dealings with other people, it would go a long way. Many of us this days are mixed breed and have learnt not to look down on any tribe. Btw my father is Yoruba and my mum is from Niger delta

  152. There will ever be tribalism because we are not a Nation but a Country

"A nation is a tightly-knit group of people which share a common culture, and also an aggregation of persons of the same ethnic family, often speaking the same language or cognate languages"

  153. The word you r looking for nepotist, tribalism is not wat u think it is linda.

  154. Very true, am from south south, born in lagos, did my uni in south, nevered experience trabalism in south-south even to non south-south, until I was serving in ondo, that's when I understand the meaning of trabalism, am talking of uni student being trabalise against by lecturers, non teaching staff and even where they leave, got to know that in some western state uni, non westerns paid seperate amount for any due, that was the height of it. Even now the comment u see on nairaland, and blogs are all based on setiment, God create us to be rational, but nigerians don't think for their self again, they follow the position of their kings men. If not for God grace their negativity/trabalism would have made me trabal too. But thanks to God I see all human as the same, and trabalism has never come near by way

    ReplyDelete
  155. Yep he has a point. Back in uni, a lady refused to rent her bq to me because I'm Igbo. She told me to my face that she can't rent her house out to an Igbo person and I was sure to tell her off before leaving....
Some parents refuse their children marrying their ideal spouse because of tribe.....

  156. Are we really that tribalistic? But if he is a cute Dangote, Adenuga, GEJ son, then most Nigerian babe can associate or marry. Even a cute white guy, then we forget about tribe. I think more statuesque.

    ReplyDelete
  157. I agree with Alibaba all the way, and yes like some earlier comments left, Igbos are the worse. its really terrible the way they discriminate
