Last Sunday, a video was posted on Facebook showing Helen Bartlett, a mother of four from Point Fortin, beating her daughter while hurling profanities at her. The 6 minute clip shows the angry mum raining blows on the girl, who whimpers in pain. Oyibo people feel the beating is shocking and call it child abuse but we are Africans and we have probably seen or experienced worse.
The woman has since said she does not regret beating the girl the way she did and is prepared to go to jail to set her wayward young daughter on the right path. She said since their father left them, the young girl has been unmanageable and she's scared the girl will either end up pregnant or killed. Watch the video after the cut and tell us if you think it was excessive...
After reading the messages, the mother said she accessed her daughter's Facebook profile and discovered photos of the girl posing 'seductively' in her underwear.
"I stand firmly by my decision. I will go to jail for it,’ the woman said. ‘I know people are saying the authorities should charge me for abuse.’
‘I am very sorry for bringing shame on you and the family. I know you love me dearly. And I love you dearly, too.’

My Opinion.
I don't condone it even though I went through worse kinds as a child. After a while, the child becomes immune to the beatings. Sometime positive reinforcement works instead. With that said, , I can't judge the woman.

Whipping ur child doest earn u respect...all u earn is fear and fear never stops a bad habit...it only introduce a new 'thou shall not be caught' strategy. The mother-daugther bond is the most essential bond in life. Cause a girl will forever seek her mothers advice, but when u plant leather marks on her bk while she's growing up, she'll never completely let herself loose around u, she'll not confide in u for FEAR of being judged. They'll always be that barrier between u two and in the future, she'll most. Likely settle for an abusive home cause that's all she's used to. Anything diffrent will confuse her. Its not easy to raising girl child Uve got to be tactfull, I for one want a daughter who can tell me everything...so I don't think we should encourage this so called 'african-upbringing' many parents are tempremental, as a result they scar their kids for life. The so called ass whooping we get from our parents isn't making us a better generation, but a very aggresive one...and ofcourse we pass it down to the next generation, this goes to explain why we are not a peacful nation. We are still one of the least resourceful n productive ppl on earth. An average nigerian blows up at every little confrontation...cause we weren't thought how to be civil in our problem solving skills. I got my fair share of ass kicking as well, but little talk my dad gave me (when he doesn't bother with the whip) had more impact in my life than all the whips combined. A child will someday outgrow an ass-kicking, but never a parental counsel.

Her behavior is linked to the family break up. Black people don't believe in counseling or emotional or psychological healing in traumatic events. Has this mother sought family counseling, involving her child in some productive program, or even sat her down and talked to her about the father's abandonment and assured her it had nothing to do with her?

Your are not a parent to indulge your children, you are a guide to them on this tour of life, and their are warning signs everywhere on a tour...you don't follow the warning, you die or end up with a broken limb or broken anything. You are just not same person before you went on the tour. Even when there are no physical scars, the psychological trauma is permanently configure to your brain.
So, for the young at heart...you want to have your freedom? Try to picture yourself after you have had whatever you are craving for right now[sex, money, popularity with friends/clique...] 10 years after and ask how much that would have added value and worth to your life.
For the Old and elderly...Do you think you would have been a better person if only you didn't make that mistake you made [ the obvious mistake, the hidden one, and the one you will take your grave] if only you had someone tell you that 10-30 years down the line, you would regret the particular action you were so crazy about.

I am assuming the webcam on the laptop was on...with the fact that it was when the mother checked the facebook page she saw the semi-nude pictures. Maybe the girl was on the internet...skyping or video chatting before her mother came and she didn't remember to log off and it could have been her chatting partner that released the video clip....my two cents

I remember once my sis husband tried rubbish like this I didn't talk the lil girl went to school and told the teacher dad smacked mummy that is grown up and he was locked up, beating little girl up this much insensitive, she thought the girl what she is doing, the only difference is the internet and mobile which the young laid advanced it a lil bit further cos is technology age. She had better thank her star she is not in uk. Learn better ways of training your child not abusing them, and some folks here is saying put papper or what ever try it and see if you won't kill your child,how low you all think. This is not beating. Its really just warming up for beating. If you indulge your kids in wrongdoing with the excuse of not wanting to abuse them, then you infact abuse their future and that of others they would end up affecting negatively because you failed to train and instill discipline in them when they were tender.
