Jehovah’s Witness Church members decry marriage restriction

Some members of Jehovah's Witness have come out to condemn their church's stance against them marrying outside their faith. According to Jehovah's Witness' doctrine, members of the church are to only marry themselves and not from any other Christian faith. If they do, it's seen as an act of immorality. And people who marry outside the church are usually expelled from the church and treated as non-members.

The members say this has kept them unmarried for years and in some cases, get married to members who they are not attracted to. Continue...

Confirming the church's position to PM News, an elder in the church, Elder James Etop, says the church's position is in accordance with biblical instructions. He said that if members are allowed to marry anyhow their faith would be affected. He said the teachings from other churches are different from the ones they have and so they try to protect their members from being affected. He took the case of heaven and earth teaching as an example
"For instance, there is nothing like hell fire as propagated in many churches. Hell fire was mentioned just as an illustration by Jesus Christ when He was saying the parable of Lazarus and the rich man in the Bible. If a member marries such a person who believes in such doctrines which is against the teaching of the Witness, it will definitely affect his or her faith.” he said.
According to Etop, members are not literally compelled to marry one another but if they marry outside of the church, the church would not honor such a union or an invitation to the wedding ceremony.

  8. Linda dear, that issue is a serious case o, and there is no amount of complaints that will make them change their stance on that marriage issue, because witnesses are so religious, anything that goes against Jehovah's will is not tolerated, and marrying outside the faith is against Jehovah's will, my gf is a Jehovah's witness, the best girl I have ever seen in my short life on earth, but the problem that's been a challenges to the relationship is because of the religious difference, and Jehovah's witnesses have very descent girls

  9. I am a Jehovah witness and my brother married a woman who goes to redeem church, and a lot of elders and other witnesses were at the wedding ceremony. And they have been married for over 10yrs, he respects her belief and she respects he's, and they are both fine. So this story about condemning those who marry outsiders is just far-fetched. Witnesses don't do that, instead they try to preach to the person of a different faith. Please do not mis-interprete our doctrines... pls. Thank you.

    1. One of the reasons why most of them is even having this marital problem also is because even when you want to marry a fellow witness, and you guys start dating, and they found out, they will start asking you both questions and preaching to you both, so that fear even make most of the witnesses unable to relate with fellow witnesses of the opposite sex on emotional ground, they hardly fall in love with each other, even when they are attracted to a fellow witness, they can't express it, that crush and attraction on a fellow witness will remain with them, no room for expressions, hold hands with an opposite sex always who is a witness, or going home together always after kingdom meetings with an opposite sex who is a witness also, or always seating together with an opposite sex who is a witness during kingdom hall meeting, and the elders will begin to suspect you, they will think you guys are dating, and they will call you both someday and begin to ask questions, and preaching to you both, so the things discourage members from falling in love with fellow witness, or expressing attractions

  37. No 1, Jehovah's witnesses do not operate a 'church'. No 2, The members are not forced into marriage to another member. They are only adviced and encouraged so that thhe couple can be those who share the same faith and belief.
No 3, Those "decrying marriage restriction" are free to marry whomever they choose. Nobody is stopping them. It is not a law. So why are they complaining?

    4. The marriage ceremony cannot hold in the congregation because what will be discussed there will be about the witness doctrines which will be different.

My boss is one of them and she's perhaps the nicest, most honest and loving person i've ever known. She's not married to a member, but nobody sends her away from service. So whats d cry about

They also do not believe in the Trinity and in the divinity of Christ and why they are branded as non-Christians but a sect with strange teachings as not allowing blood transfusion and that only 144,000 will go to heaven - that is the case, no vacancy for their members still left, that is why in order to not to loose out they removed the doctrine of hell fire so that they can remain on an earthly paradise.

  78. Linda, I think you should conduct an extensive research on any topic or issue before posting on your blog. There are a lot of discrepancies in this post. JW who chose to marry outside their religion are NOT expelled, neither is it considered as a form of immortality. It is seen as an outright disobedience of God's principles. And oh, NO spiritually minded JW will "outcry" this bible principle. So I say, this particular post of yours is poorly written as it has lots of loop holes. All the same, I dont even see how this is a topic for your blog. To each their own.

  94. Linda, I think I‘ll advise that you verify your stories before publishing them. This is one of the stories I believe you did not handle well. Please be informed that Jehovah‘s Witnesses do not expel their members for marrying non-witnesses. Expelling a member from the congregation could occur when such a member becomes pregnant for a non-witness out of wedlock and this could also be the case when a witness commits fornication with another witness. Expulsion is a general scriptural principle that applies to any unrepentant wrongdoer (1 Corinthians 5:9-11) who are received back into the christian fold when they demonstrate genuine repentance. Marrying a non-witness is simply not the basis for expulsion. Of course fornication is clearly against bible standard and marrying a non-witness is not an act of fornication for which anybody is expelled. Clearly, though the bible instructs to marry only in the Lord, that is those who share your faith. For more enquiries you can visit www.jw.org and send your questions. For some of us LINDA IKEJI BLOG is a daily tonic, and will not expect it to be a place for prejudiced misinformation.

  106. who even wants to marry these ones sef?

    ReplyDelete
  107. it's not dat way..... like every religion has their way, Jehovah's witness have theirs too. we are Christ followers and we believe that marrying only in the lord means those whom we have d same faith with. if one marries a non member you are not expelled however you have chosen to marry someone that does not share d same views or faith with you.
you are expelled when you unrepentantly practice fornication or immorality b4 MARRIAGE. go on jw.org and do research.

  111. Kolaq says:
This is what has been going on in some other churches. So it is not new. These churches teach that members should pray for the will of God in marriage and at the same time tactically encourage or indirectly force members to marry within the church! If the will of God for a sister or brother is outside his or her denomination, whose will should such a person follow? many times pastors forget that they will give account of all they teach to God! There will be suprises in heaven I tell you. The only condition given to a christian is that the partner must be a christian. Many tend to want to correct God or holier than God. Thos kind of teachimg has led to some kind of 'will of God' in marriage. You see a choir member targeting another one, an usher targetting another one, and so on. And the church is happy that their children who have been blackmailed or coerced are getting married to denomination rather than their lovers. Ah, our God is patient. There is punishment for either adding or taking away from the word of God!!!

  112. this write up is true..... i had a friend that is a witness and he asked me to join them but i refused.... and he said in their church, i must join them (even be baptised)before we can get married......my dear is correct, if you dnt marry your fellow witness, you will be dismembered (as in they wont have anything to do with that person....

Meanwhile, all churches have their mature singles wey de find husbands...even the ones that have no restrictions....or you mean to tell me that all the mature singles r JWs..

I'm not a JW but this public agitation sound ludicrous to me...this channel is the definition of 'inappropriate'

Just as the Muslim faith restrict there ladies from marrying outside because of what they believe, if she feels she wants a husband out of the witness family then she should make her choice, no one will kill her or point guy at her, whatever believe anybody may have, they should stick by it if its okay by them else they should quit if they want to.

  123. Hello people, learn to respect others believes and stop judging. For those who do not agree with the doctrine, take a walk abi the doctrine say make u no go another church? Finally,ur personal relationship with God is what matters, try and establish one, at least we can discern good and bad, choose good. God help us all.

  127. I have a friend who is a witness in Abule Egba area. I don't know of the marriage restriction because i have not discuss it with her. But I know they do not celebrate birthdays, Christmas or anything. But she and her husbands drinks like fish and watch films they like. Their prayer does not last long but their injunction is to evangelise at least twice a week.

  132. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Rev. 21:8)
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. (Rev. 20:15.)
17 The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God. (Psalm 9:17)

  133. Lol at their ladies looking like old witches.. you see all manner of near menopause single sistas. Hehehehe, they call church members worshipers of Satan. "No jokes o" they refer to university as a river filled with crocodiles and say if 10 of their members go into that river(university) only 2 out of that 10 may survive the crocs... thereby causing some members with genuine intentions to train their kids to any level stop their kids at secondary school level to either learn a trade or do menial jobs.. This is why there are lots of illiterates there. They don't dance, clap, speak in tongues or even belive in it, they don't do blood transfusion.. I swear if their member get accident, and need blood urgently to survive, they will choose for him her to die and say they will see him/her again in paradise on earth .infact members have it in black and white, duly signed that they shouldn't be given blood incase of any emergency and any doctor that goes against this ehhh, wahala on his head.......choiiii!!!! Their isshh plenty make I pause here...

  134. Honestly, linda I've never commented here before, but this.. nah this is a Big LIE. You should do proper research before posting. Did you even ask a baptized jehovah witness? 100 percent sure you didn't .

  135. The bible says people will die because of ignorance...The Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe anything outside of the bible and i know a lot of the members that married outside the religion. People should find the truth and let it set them free..wordly achievements like getting married, having kids enjoying life are not the ultimate goal but being found worthy of everlasting life by God. Any God that will burn someone in fire for ever is not worthy of your worship too. God is so loving that he only gave two options to humand which is obey and live, disobey and die. From dust you were created and to dust you go back to. Shikena!

  136. The witnesses cherishes the bible standards.they realise also that God's laws are for our own good, they are not burdensome nor are they restriction.so if someone who has chosen to ignore them claim what is posted, that is their problem
...besides when you take a rough statistics of the unmarried ladies who are ripe for marriage, I bet you you will discover the opposite of what is claimed by the supposed blogger.

  137. I want to do what the life giver and Creator Jehovah says. He makes my heart beat and my lungs breathe. I think he is smarter than me. So if He tells me to marry a believer, that's what I will do. It's been said that 90% of your happiness depends on who you marry. I have seen many among Jehovah's Witnesses that married unbelievers and do not seem as happy as those who have married Jehovah's Witnesses.

So the question is; do you want to be happy?
Learn more reasons why we should marry only Jehovah's Witnesses at jw.org and look up marriage.
