Victoria Odita was rushed to RAK Hospital in critical condition as a result of an incisional hernia in her abdomen, which caused her intestines to hang out of her body.
It’s thought the hernia developed following Odita’s four caesarian sections, which left her abdominal wall very weak and eventually allowed her intestines to push through. Doctors at RAK Hospital performed complicated surgery that saved her life.The 37-year-old had suffered from abdominal swelling for years before realising she had a large hernia in her abdomen. When the swelling increased following her fourth pregnancy six months ago, she sought medical help, but was denied treatment in Nigeria because of the extreme severity of her condition.
“She was rejected treatment in her own country and had been suffering with immense pain for the past six months,” said Dr Parvez Ahmad, a specialist surgeon at RAK Hospital who operated on Odita. “She was a high-risk case and a challenge for any surgical team. An immediate operation was performed to repair the incisional hernia and alleviate the symptoms.”
Parvez explained the condition is quite common after multiple abdominal surgeries. However, he said Odita’s situation was made worse because her heart pumping capacity was only 25 per cent, which in normal person should be more than 60 per cent.
“A person who gains significant weight after abdominal surgery, becomes pregnant or lifts heavy objects is most at risk for an incisional hernia,” said Dr Anup Panigrahi, head of the minimal invasive surgery department at RAK Hospital. “The incision is weakest, and most prone to a hernia, while it is still healing.
“It is not only a female problem; both the sexes should be aware that anybody who has had one or many abdominal surgeries is at risk of developing an incisional hernia.”

Yes, the intestines are outside your abdomen. Mine was caused by strenuous physical exercise. Nigerian doctors have come a long way, and I have a lot of respect for them. It's amazing what lots of Nigerians do for asylum.

Most people that comment on this blog are so shallow minded, so any opportunity u guys see to insult Nigeria, u jump into it. So someone with an incisional hernia for 6 months whereby the intestine is hanging out will die of infection. This story is a big lie, repairs of more complicated hernias are done in Nigeria teaching hospitals. Which hospitals did she go to? One private hospital is now "Nigeria Hospital" Refused by Her Own country? I just pity. An incisional hernia to put it in layman's terms is very much like the big navel(and some can be really quite big) some are born with , but occurs at other levels of the abdomen and commonly results from weakening of the abdominal wall following previous surgeries. Like the " big navel ", it can be totally without problems or can become problematic.It is certainly not a picture of raw intestines protruding through the abdomen as has been portrayed here .
Either way , IT CAN EASILY AND ROUTINELY be handled by any of many specialist(or trainee specialist ) or general practice surgeons available in many hospitals all over the country !
What u fail to realize is that many corrupt Nigerians like Victoria Odita will tell any lies to justify Govt sponsorship abroad in order to enjoy the undeserved ESTACODE(foreign exchange paid to beneficiaries for often bogus miscellaneous expenses)
The unsuspecting foreign Doctors were probably being nice by posing with her in the picture .(No Surgeon worth his salt would pose ( as if a feat ) with a patient over a MERE incisional hernia repair .)
I should know because I am a Surgeon .

ReplyDeleteLindi, please you must be very sure of this story from those doctors, because Aunt Odita (as I call her) was in Isolo general hospital. we stay in the same room I was on bed rest during my pregnancy, that's how I meet her, we were Four woman that had serious issues but hers was way too serious. We were all taken care of o. Her baby was operated on thou it was a 50/50 chance. we all had night prayers just for her. Her story is true but those Dr am not sure, because the baby was operated here in Nigeria o and I gave birth i think 3 months after. I just call her now and she said the intestine was corrected Feb the day she called me. Lindi if you need her contact, to hear her story let me know cos she said she has no idea the story have been published.
