Adedibu’s son, 30 others escape death in near plane crash in Abuja

31 passengers, including the son of late Ibadan politician, Lamidi Adedibu, Sen Kamoru Adedibu, escaped death yesterday after an Overland Airlines aircraft they boarded caught fire shortly before take off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja yesterday.

Saturday Tribune reports that the plane, scheduled for Ibadan from Abuja at 4:52p.m. was about to take off when it started emitting smoke from one of its engines.
One of the passengers who spoke with Saturday Tribune said the about 31 passengers of the plane were already seated before the incident.
“We first observed that engineers were frantically fiddling with the plane’s engine. Then we suddenly saw smoke. It is not funny at all. All of us, including a senator, rushed out of the plane. Continue...

“We were subsequently evacuated by airport officials. As I am speaking with you now (8:30p.m.), we are waiting for another plane from Ilorin, which we have been promised will take us to Ibadan. We thank God,” she said.
Senator Adedibu described the incident as a horrible experience but thanked God that it did not happen mid-air.
He commended the pilot, the crew and airport officials for being observant and for the prompt rescue operation. He also confirmed that all the passengers were still at the Abuja airport at 8:45p.m. when Saturday Tribune spoke with him.

    2. Igor, Oduah didn't cause the engine mishap. Most accidents on airplane mid-flight are typically from human error. In this case, seems line maintenance/check before flight was commenced and a faulty engine was discovered in time. Maintenance of aircraft is solely the responsibility of the aircraft operator not the Minister of Aviation, unless that is her airline and aircraft. I belief she and her agencies are working very hard to keep all the airlines compliant, but you will have one to two cases like this. This may not be a non-compliant aircraft operator case, it may be something else. We don't know, so let the AIB do their job and give facts on what happened. Oh btw, no more stories about the aircraft being old and thats why it caught fire, the new Boeing 787-8 china bound flight caught on fire due to lithium ion batteries issue, point is, brand new OEM aircrafts have mishaps. As long as you maintain your aircraft, it can last a very longtime, 30-40 yrs even longer. A little education to correct the wrong thinking on this blog. Sorry for any spelling errors.

  19. This is what I hate about Nigeria. They keep thanking God for saving their lives instead of actually trying to put a stop to all these plane crashes.
I just saw a very emotional video on facebook of one of the 2 sosoliso plane crash survivors. It's really nerve-wrecking when you realise that nothing has actually changed or improved in the safety of the aviation industry.
Are you trying to tell me that those lives that were lost in plane crashes didn't thank God enough or that they don't know how to thank God?
Tomorrow is Sunday, they'll go to church to give testimony and continue with their lives instead of asking questions, investigating to prevent future occurences etc...
No wonder the Minister of aviation said that the last plane crash was "an act of God"

    1. Average Nigerans can't really do much. They don't have enough airlines to pick n choose from. So, they go with the lesser of the evils. The NCAA should be monitoring the airlines and operators but the responsibility belongs to the aircraft operators. But what do you do with an irresponsible aircraft operator that bribes its way through compliance and knows people in government? Nothing, especially in Nigeria.

    1. The plane did not crash, stop being melodramatic. I am sincerely happy for you and your family however, near death experiences can change perspectives. Also, these airplanes have slides/ raft and has been qualified for emergency evacuation from the cabin in cases such as these. This BBJ aircraft as well as others can evacuate over 300 passengers in 90 seconds or less. So, with minor fires such as these, they have enough time to evacuate the aircraft. Just fyi

  48. This so called media issues no how to lie Abeg.now here is the undiluted version of d story from my friend whom I ca technico who was returning from Abuja where she went to register for Nysc.i cannot believe I am commenting on Linda blog today but I if I had lost my friend on dis flight no one would have known how Nigerians especially the so called good crew do not understand dat u are not to implement d culture of managing things when it comes to flying planes.according to my friend who told me she almost died dis yesterday in Abuja "when the plane was taxing on d runway to takeoff, the plane stopped moving at some point.and so the crew called on engineers to fix d plane.while all dis was going on.an elderly woman (who had called her husband wen she noticed how faulty d plane was)said she doesn't want to fly again! And guess wat d stupid crew said d woman should sit down dat d plane can fly.omo the woman kept insisting she wanted to get off because her husband has already warned her to get off that plane whilst she narrated d incidence to him on phone.and so after some time of persuasion ,the lady sat down and so the plane continued to taxi on the runway.just before d plane took off, everyone began to perceive a burning smell from the same plane n d next thing smoke started oozing out from the plane.in reaction to this.a PASSENGER pushed down d emergency door and everybody ran as fast as their legs could carry them because they feared the plane could also explode! Now here comes the media talking bullshit.imagine attempted murder(managing a plane that has a faulty engine).nonsense! This habit of managing planes has to stop.i am not saying that means of transportation on land such as buses are safer but more attention should be paid to flights because damn! We are talking of people lives been at risk in the AIR.ahnhn Nigeria which way forward!enough is enough to manage manage!

EVERYTHING IN NIGERIA WE WILL MENTION GOD. ITS TIME TO ACT AND EXECUTE RATHER THAN BE CALLING GOD ANYHOW.. THAT IS WHY NIGERIA IS WERE IT IS TODAY

  63. Let me say something here. i have boarded that Overland plane from Lagos to Ilorin before. it was the most grueling one hour. i told myself never to step on their planes again, even though i was on official trip. it is not n 'Act of God', it is carelessness, ineptitude and a show of disregard for the lives of Nigerians. Anyone ever on that Overland plane will tell you it is suicidal to get on it. i couldnt even chat with the lady seated next to me. Everyone was visibly afraid because of its engine noise, the fans on the wings of the plane have no covering, they were basically spinning naked, the navigation was completely wrong, like it was not meant to be a commercial flight but a war plane. Landing was the most pathetic, we literally landed the plane with the pilot in prayers and i stepped off sweating profusely. Now did you say the plane caught fire? You must be kidding me, it sure looks like something that may happen every time the put that thing in the air. Government should line up old and dangerous planes and destroy them. Any airline that fly an old and ill-maintained plane should be banned for 5 years, not just all these 2weeks suspension. thats the way to keep your citizens safe and not 'thank God they didnt die'.
