Do you know that upcoming actors in Nigeria now pay to feature in movies?

I know it sounds unbelievable, but it's fact! A-list Nollywood actors & actresses get paid for featuring in movies, but if you're an unknown actor struggling to get into the movie industry, some movie producers make you pay to feature in their movies. That's the new trend now. I'm sure some Nollywood practitioners will come here to deny this but y'all know it's true. And if you don't know this already, you guys need to start investigating this.

If you're looking to feature in a movie, all you need to do is pay a fee, no audition is required. For minor roles, these producers demand anything from N50k to N100k...it all depends on the role they are giving you. If you want to play a lead role it's between N500k to N1million. Waka pass people are even made to pay.

The trick some of these producers use is this; they say they are not making money from these movies because people aren't buying them so can't invest all their money in it. They also say finding financiers to pay for the production of a movie is hard, so for these movies to see the light of day, every cast member has to contribute. Thing is, many are eager to pay. Several people told me that it's the girls they refer to as 'runz girls' looking for popularity that started this trend. They would offer movie producers money to feature in their movie so they can refer to themselves as actresses and now it's become a part of Nollywood.

But let me state here that there are some movie producers who don't do this...not all of them demand for money. But a lot of them do. Is that OK? What's your thought on this new trend?

    2. You are so right. It used to be in kind not cash, n I am talking about those big names out there right now who've bn in d scene for 10, 15+yrs. This trend discouraged me many yrs ago wen I was interested in nollywood/acting.

Kukuma sef, naija is a country where job seekers pay to be employed into the govt sector, so actors/actresses paying to be featured in most of those quack movies shouldn't be shocking, Linda.

  12. This is absolutely wrong....it shouldn't be done that way,,we have so many talented individuals who can do very well in the industry,,why not give them a chance??na wa o...

  13. A lot of sharp practices have permeated Nollywood.

Movie producers do not only ask for cash from these aspiring, but relatively unknown actors and actresses. Some producers also exploit their desperation and vulnerability by demanding for sex as well.

It's really up to the exploited to stop the exploitation but alas, in Nigeria where everyone wants to be celebrated at all cost, many of these actors and actresses are as guilty as the movie producers.

  14. Well, I knew about this some two years ago, as I have been doing mini pageants...an actor cum producer I met during one of the beauty pageant camps approached me, telling me he thinks I have a talent in Acting, and he could help me get into the movie industry...I was interested and thought it was as easy as it sounded. Then he scheduled a meeting for me and him after the pageant show.
I was confused when he sent me the hotel address, I didn't understand why such discussion should be done in a hotel room but I decided to play mature even though I was really nervous.
On getting to the room, the young man went straight to the point and told me that I will have to sleep with him there and then, if I really wanted to get into the industry. When I refused, he asked me to pay 200k and he will pass me at the audition and I said I could not afford it.
He walked me out of the room saying I wasn't serious.....he insulted me all he wanted and even mentioned names of certain actresses whom he helped to get their first movie role in Nollywood, and he said I was too naive.....ever since then I have gotten other offers ranging from 300k to 500k at some point, my mom offered to pay the 300k for me to feature in a movie with top actors, but I told her not to bother. If I am meant to act, I want to merit the role and not through other means.

  40. It's a pity! But come to think of it, is it not the same everywhere? Other ministries equally demand money for job-seekers before they re given jobs. I ve heard cases of people paying 200k and above just to secure a job even with first class certificate......So why won't the directors or whatever join in d corruption....Only prayers will save this nation.

Y'all shud pls blv dis, am an actor and dis is authentic, its fuckin true, its a trend nw, ofcos I dnt pay bt I've run in2 dis "producers/directors" lotsa tyms whr I've bn asked to pay a certain fee rangin frm 5k upwards, membership fee of 30k plus, dey call fees lyk dis production fees and to dia defence dey call d movies yu'll fearture in as "Projection movies"; say dey ar tryna project ur face n dey'd start payin yu wen ur demand increases n face is knwn and shii. Nw lemme state it dat only wannabes and desperate ppl wll pay dese shitty fees, dnt be gullible pls. If yu ar truly talented and focused, yu shud get paid for ur work and not pay to work! Its not done anywhr and its a total package of wickedness, evil, greed, slavery, bullshit and arrant nonsense. And to dos who luk dwn on d job actors ar paid to do, its freakin hardwork, its challengin and its a serious business, more serious dan most 8-6 jobs we hav out dere trust me wen I say dis so its no beans! DON'T EVA PAY ANY1 TO ACT! ITS PLAIN STUPID AND DUMB! Dnt let any1 patronise yu wth phrases lyk "no pain no gain", dey dsav a bullet to d head. Am an actor and am gud at wat I do, I get paid for wat I do and I pay my bills for wat I do, can't trade my job/passion/right to live happy for anythin. If yu ar talented, ur talent will pay off one day for yu, be dogged and blv in wat yu stand for and be true to urself, go for auditions, meet ppl who will help yu advance further, dnt pay any fucktard for a movie feature, d forces of nature and attraction wnt evn support success dat way not to even mention supernatural forces, its fraud, no1 makes it big dat way. Again I say "DON'T PAY TO WORK, GET PAID!". #EnuffSaid

  99. Thanks. I'm a Nigerian actress in the US after wasting time looking for roles in Nigerian films here was thinking about coming to Naija like others have to be in Nollywood, but they don't say what they did to be in movies... However, there's nothing new about it. Beverly Naya never hid the fact that her mother paid for her first movie to be made where she played the lead role. Actresses having been sleeping with producers, directors etc for years. Even in Hollywood the proverbial casting couch is very real. Men in power will sample the "goods" first before giving women a shot in music and movies and anywhere else they can. God has been ministering to me about this. Everywhere I turn I see something about this and I'm reading this now on Linda's Blog. Last night I speaking to God about how frustrated I am. I turned to Youtube and watched a Yoruba movie titled Sekowale 1&2 and it was about this same thing. I was afraid of producing, but that's what I have to do to move forward and I will open doors for others like me. It is well. God will bless my efforts. IJN!

  107. Apparently corruption has permeated every nook and cranny of our society. The female artistes obviously use this phenomenon as a springboard to thrive in their "Runz biz", as they become more expensive and classy to their aristos.

  131. Very true Linda,my gf is an actress so i get to hear a whole lot. Not even payment alone,in some cases, they also demand sex plus payment and the girls gladly oblige. It is so rampant now that the film makers even beg some A-list actors and actresses to do movies for them free or some times offer to give them fuel money only.

Little wonder many Nollywood movies are just a joke, with pepper-sellers, shoemakers, vulcanisers, Omata traders, etc, making up the cast and crew of many a Nollywood bastardly compromised movie set!!!

  137. This person calling names. Are you very sure about yourself . Beefer like you. Did these names tell you they paid solo, okwii and uchenancy money. If you swear you will die. Better ask god for forgiveness because you just told a big lie to the world due to your beef and your own inability to deliver and get the same roles they get which you claim they pay for. People like you will never see any good thing come there way until you ask God to forgive you so long these names you had the guts to mention are innocent. Be careful how you antagonise innocent people . Let God be the judge with what you did. Looser....

  138. Very true. I know a friend that has this experience. She paid for the waka pass roles they gave her and also got slept with by three different men over a course of a year she was rolling with them. Till date ,dey haven't made her popular actress. Naija is messed up in every facet of life.

  140. Nollywood Auditions 2014, Lagos, Abuja & Enugu details, date Nollywood auditions 2014 has been unveiled by the Nigeria film industry as acting auditions will be carried out in 3 major centers across the federation. We all were aware of the Nollywood auditions 2013 and most (well, some that applied) applicants were called to feature in roles and plays while some of them are top shots today compared to those that didn't apply. One this is certain, if you've got the talent, don’t take this opportunity for granted. Who says Nollywood actors and actresses don't make money? Well before you make such false declarations, check the likes of mercy Johnson, funke akindele, genevieve nnaji etc They all entered the entertainment industries at one point in time and are all swimming in millions today. below are some of the details that can get you to the top of your career if you are interested. Well, you all know and are familiar with the producer of the movie titled "ije"right? well ,since the movie was a hit among other movies acted by the same producer, they are therefore calling on people(male or female) interested in participating in their soon to be released movie series with the caption "mystery" For more information call Mrs.Amacos Gloria on +2348102690902, or Email; mrsamacosworldproducer@gmail.com
