Oyedepo, Dangote, Adenuga to pay N400m luxury tax on private jets

According to a story by Encomium magazine, Bishop David Oyedepo, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr. Mike Adenuga are among the top 10 Nigerian billionaires who will pay hundreds of millions of naira annually as luxury tax due to the imposition of a whooping $4,000 luxury tax by Aviation Ministry on private jet owners and operators per departure.

Some of these super rich Nigerians make use of their jets 3/4 times in a week either within or outside Nigeria and for every trip, it's a cool $4, 000 tax. Continue...

From Encomium magazine

According to our sources, among the four jets owned by Bishop Oyedepo (Gulfstream V and G550, Bombardier and Gulfstream G430), he uses three regularly personally and for his missionary work. Thus, his luxury tax annually will be an average of N399 million.  Alhaji Aliko Dangote who has three private jets in his hanger will also pay an average of N399 million per annum.  Dr. Mike Adenuga, Jnr, whose Falcon 7x and Bombardier jet are used for personal and business purpose should pay an average of N266 million.  Governor Rotimi Amaechi and his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Governor Godswill Akpabio would shell out an average of N166.4 million annually.  Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor falls into the same category of N166.4 million naira payer.  Meanwhile, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, Jide Omokorie and Ifeanyi Ubah would pay an average of N133 million annually, while Jimoh Ibrahim falls within the N100 million category.  Furthermore, the richest woman in Nigeria, Folorunsho Alakija would spend N66 million on luxury tax.
Findings by Encomium Weekly revealed that the top 10 private jet owners who would cough millions annually on the new luxury tax are below.
The clash of the titans between the Federal Government and private jet owners reached a crescendo with the imposition of the $4,000 luxury tax on private jet owners and operators per departure.  A memo was sent to all private jet operators stating that Nigerian registered private jets would henceforth pay $3,000 for every departure, while foreign registered private jets would pay $4,000.

  19. Its about time.
For so long, tax evasion has been treated with kid's gloves in Nigeria especially when it has to do with these wealthy lot.
Hopefully, with this new development, the government can keep to its own part of the Social Contract by improving the Aviation Sector with monies raisedm taxes.
On a second thought, why is the Aviation Ministry coming up with this now? Is this some sort of panacea for the many ills that have befallen the sector? Isn't this a ploy to make the masses believe that they are working round the clock to better things?
Finally, for the love of whatever we hold dear, what's a seating governor doing with a private jet when there are people ravaged by hunger and disease in his state? When there are death trap roads, poor electricity supply, failing health and educational system, etc.
I don't even want to mention the "men of God" with 3PJs before some people have my jugular for dinner.
Irrespective of what the motive of the authorities might be,this is a step in the right direction...things you won't dare with good old Uncle Sam.

We heard his also a business man, but what is a man of God doing with so much money like that? He happens to be the wealthiest Nigerian pastor! Why can't he emulate the life of Jesus christ? Everybody knows how charitable TB Joshua is! Oyadepo though! Seriously, I so don't like Living Faith! They are so wordly and all about prosperity! That why I have alotta respect for the Senior Pastor of Dumanis ABJ! God will judge all these men of God one day!

  95. Well simply put, we "Nigerians" would pay the luxury tax for this people. The clergy men would pay this of the church, Dangote would simply add N1 to all the prices of clement, sugar, etc. Adenuga, could add 10kobo extra to your phone call bills. So whats new!!!!!!! Nigerians would suffer it. Moral of the story.... you can't hurt the rich.

  98. Taxes go way back and it's what the advanced economy use to develop their countries. It's not about invoking huge taxes on the big wigs, it's how the revenue generated would be utilised. This action can also lead to a boomerang effect because these rich guys own a lot of the big companies and by the time the increase the price of virtually everything, the common masses will bear the full brunt.

And let CAN president tell us if he is sincere with himself and the fake gospel he preach, who bought him private jet? Jesus said go out and win souls for the kingdom of God is @ hand bt for today pastors simply go out and gather wealth and bring it to the church for the kingdom of God is @hand.

  106. I think it is time we move from our poverty mentality and accept the fact that not everybody is meant to be poor and for the haters of Bishop Oyedepo;it sounds quite myopic to say that because there are few poor members of his church that is the reason why he shouldnt own a jet.some of the commentators have two or three handsets;why dont they sell one of the phones and help a poor relative.we have to understand that not all fingers are equal

    ReplyDelete
  107. Oooh..so dey will use the tax to maintain d aviation industry???...smh

    ReplyDelete
  108. I beg to differ from the general opinion about the tax.Where on earth is a jet owner taxed per movement.I am sure they pay landing fees, parking fees,e.t.c
To own a jet is not a crime and for a pastor to own four jets is not a crime.I am rather happy that a Pastor that has a traceable track record of wealth building, corporate social responsibility,Intergrity owns a jet than a state governor buying a jet with taxpayers money. We need to have men like Dangote,Adenuga that will serve as role models for the upcoming generation to aspire to be like them and also to remove shame from the face of the blackman on the global platform ,where black people are seen as naturally poor

  109. My people, let's call a spade a spade. Thou shall not judge but we all have good sense of reasoning. I don't care for what purpose but how reasonable is it for a man of God riding 4 jets? If a rich man has 4 cars, people complain its too much let alone 4 jets where each cost billions. Businessmen that we all know dere sources of income uses 1 or 2 jets and d use is justifiable cos they travel a lot. Tell me wt 4 jets for evangelism, how many millions of souls has he won? God is watching, beware, nothing last forever, vanity upon vanity.

  112. But even the BIBLE said he who works shall eat. That he who doesn't have, the little shall be taken away to compliment the pocket of he who has already !That's the cradle of capitalism"the bible" for those who don't know. And moreover.......these individuals struggled so hard to be where they are today. Under the unstable and harsh economy, they were able to make it, develop such an empire and as well helping the government in terms of employment as so on, which the so called government couldn't do. Even to fulfill the "social contract theory" by the government is a problem, that's why they now privatized PHCN and others. If at all they frown at the surplus value....which is the main advantage and main focus of capitalism, why don't they abolish it ?....Rather than pushing people at the forefront, they possibly make the money, and they take it back in disguise".Even Karl marx envisaged this bullshit and condemned capitalism to it's barest minimum in his work"das kapital".Though capitalism develops a nation faster than socialism. But since they(the govt) don't want to develop the country, and has indicated and prophesied their weakness towards the developmental strides in the country.....I think they should allow these capitalists " bourgeoisies" enjoy their money pls. And the fruits of their labour, and as well, stop these unnecessary extortions, Or better still transform to socialism/ communism....Thereby, making the citizenry be classless "equality of all"....and every body to work for the govt. I know some people would think that taxation is good because of development economies in the world practice it" but have u asked urself what has the federal govt done with the revenues generated locally"oil" and also these countries that take taxation seriously have nothing really to fall back on in terms mineral resources unlike Nigeria...so that triggered "taxation" in order to fund the coffers of the govt. In a nutshell, I pray a revolutionary leader comes up to flush out all these mediocres that lack simple administrative prowess" I rest my laurels.....political analyst

Many of the commentatries reeks of ignorance and low classism.I hope we know for record purposes that Winners Chapel has a registered aviation business:Dominion Air Services;so therefore 4 jets is not enough.Winners Chapel has and duly runs two universities and there has never been any case of the workers not being paid meanwhile Ifeanyi Uba hasnt paid his workers in a longwhile and his company has gone into receivership because of too much debt.Winners chapel has secondary schools up and down the country.what about some OAP's buying Porsche. They have to be taxed too because that is luxury and they dont contribute to the society

  119. I don't have an exact reason why Bishop Oyedepo has 4 private jets, but all i can say is that he is a man that knows God and also knows the covenant principles of prosperity. So therefore he is dangerously blessed by God. If he has 4 jets believe it or not, the jets are needed for the ministry and not for flexing or luxury travelling.

  120. It is only the mentally lazy that will think that a man of God can't be rich. I wonder why Nigerians believe that it is tithe money that Pastor Oyedepo used to buy jets, build universities, pay workers, build many secondary schools, and sponsor many students in School. If a church could achieve all these then, are we not to be shameful that even States in Nigeria could not maintain even a university with all the allocations. If you think that 4 private jets is too much for Pastor Oyedepo, then my gateman- Umaru believes it is insane for any man to be driving a 2 million naira car and be living in a 2 bdrm flat that costs 600,000 in a year. It is all about where you belong. In my 10 years of research, I have never seen a blessed man speak evil of rich men of God, it is always the exclusive preserve of the poor, frustrated, and hopeless folks...I don't attend winners, but I will try to sow on that ground. Come to think of it, are the folks complaining better educated, informed, and richer that the folks in church who gives regularly? If your MD and your boss are givers in Church, I believe it is just stupid to think you know better than them..

  122. Men will always speak according to their size. My brother who God don bless e don bless man cannot reverse it . From scriptures , He blessed Abraham, Isaac, David, solomon and many more. Christ became poor that we might be rich. Riches are in levels. Pray to God to enlarge your coast just the same way Jabez prayed. I pray for Bishop oyedepo kind of Blessings Iin Jesus Name, Amen. See. Poverty is terrible. The worst thing about poverty is that it affects people mentality. Their reasoning becomes outdated. So when they speak, they sound outdated, backward and nonsensical. Such people need mental and poverty deliverance or else they will continue to be bereaved, unhappy and very sorrowful to the wealth and gains of others.

  125. Everybody is busy commenting about Bishop Oyedepo's 4 private jets.In the days of Jesus,He rode on a colt that no man had ever ridden. In our day, that is akin to a brand new Ferrari,Maserati,Aston Martin,Lambhorgini etc.In Bible days,Jesus could have used several private jets if the technology was available then.Who told you Jesus was poor? Can a poor man feed 5000 men besides women and children?Go and try it and see.Jesus used Peter's boat to preach the Gospel.Tell me,how many people in Jesus' day could buy or afford a boat?Jesus went to the house of Zaccheaus the tax collector to wine and dine.If he had a poverty-mentality,He would never dare it.He would have condemned the tax collector to death. The Devil has blinded the Church and that is the reason why many churches look askance at prosperity. You can be very rich and righteous altogether. The Devil knows you will deal the coup de grace with his kingdom if you had the money. How many of you know that this tax balderdash is aimed at impeding the flow of the Gospel? Please be sensitive in the spirit.Dangote,Adenuga and the likes of Jimoh Ibrahim and some Governors were just mentioned to beguile Nigerians. The kernel of this matter is to disrupt the Gospel.I am dead sure that Dangote and Adenuga will not pay a dime.Have you forgotten that they sponsored Goodluck Jonathan's campaign?Be guided. These people are shrewd. All they want to do is extort money from the Church which is their plan B OR stop the flow of the gospel which is their plan A.I will not be dismayed if it turned out that the Islamic fundamentalists are the brains behind this.Fellow Nigerians, refuse to be fooled and develop a prosperity mentality. It is sheer religious madness for you to say you want to remain poor because Jesus was born in a Manger.God created wealth and the level of wealth you command, righteously(because some of the so-called super-rich Nigerians are merely milking the citizenry e.g. How did Alakija who happens to be the richest black woman get her oil block from Ibrahim Babangida?),depends on your mentality, not Christianity. You can be a pastor and be wallowing in grinding poverty. It has nothing to do with religion. It is about covenant-wealth,not Harvard University wealth. Please wake up.If God has blessed you, genuinely, why would you hide in a cave?Have you asked yourselves about the latest development on the Otedola-Farouk subsidy scam case? You saw Otedola travel with Jonathan and Diezani to represent Nigeria while the case was still very hot in Naija. They will never pay a dime. The luxury tax is aimed at men of God.Period!

  126. Its sad enough to see a lot of poor people in this country who cannot afford to eat 3 square meals a day and cannot afford to get the basic necessities of life. More sad however is when the poverty migrates further from the outside into their brain and compromises the quality of their thoughts and thus their mindset. This guarantees that such a person would never be free of poverty even when the circumstances of his/her life changes. Many of the comments I've seen here has shown that a lot of Nigerians mindset is now the throne on which poverty seats, that is why you would find it difficult to comprehend a pastor having 4 private jets. Whats wrong with it as long as he can afford it,some people were very happy at what the aviation ministry is asking of them saying "correct!","Peanuts..compare 2 deir fortunes","Good! I like this! If possible, they should pay more.*wink+smiles*" etc. Well are you sure you've not unconsciously given up on yourself reaching their level of wealth? For anyone who is still aiming to get to their level or even surpass it should know that today its their turn tomorrow would be yours how would you feel then when a govt that didn't help you to succeed now wants to collect (by force) out of the profit you sweated for. I think we should be more fair in our thinking and stop being sentimental.
