Adams Oshiomhole signs death penalty for kidnappers bill into Edo state law

Edo State governor Adams Oshiomhole today October 18th signed into the Edo State law, a bill that prescribes the death penalty for kidnappers. The death penalty is not just for kidnappers who kill their victims, its for all acts of kidnapping whether it involves murder or not. The new bill also states that houses used by kidnappers will be demolished.

Is this a welcome development or...? Please share your thoughts...

    Oshiomole should thread carefully before he signs innocent people to be slaughtered for nothing.

    With all the almost accurate investigative methods in developed world, their government still find it difficult to sign death warrants for the fear of wrongful conviction.

    Now, imagine a country like Nigeria where its words against words. Innocent people go die tire.

    I'm all for death penalty with video evidence...or at least; very increaminating evidence. Not hearsay as it is in most cases.

    no it is not. Death penalty should be advocated against. Life sentence shuld be emitted to kidnappers n d likes rada dan death penalty. Other countries are driving towards abolishing 'Death penalty', nigeria should be moving with what is obtainable rather than regressing.

    Oga Adams take am easy now. Death sentence? Yes, if it involves murder, long sentences if it doesn't. But the issue of the house, that 1 i no gree. if a man rents a bungalow on a plot of land after telling the landlord that he is a businessman who deals in fabrics and it was confirmed. if that tenat now turns out to be a kidnaper, using the apartment as his den. will bros Adams demolish the house knwing fully well that the house is the only means of survival for the 80yrs old landlord?

    There should be one exception: Those who successfully kidnap politicians should be rewarded with amnesty / immunity. However, if they kill the politician, then they should be punished by forcing them to take his former political position. That should teach 'em! #openseason

    The same law was enacted in Anambra due to d high rate of kidnapping in d state and since then kidnapping was drastically reduced. So,I believe it's a welcome development.

    Good response from an active Governor. Others only respond when their relatives are victims. They should be executed 21days after the exhaustion of the appeal process. Don't remand them indefinitely in prison for another administration to grant them amnesty. Good job.

    Politrikcians abuse of power, 25 years to life wud b better. Politicians looting causes more harm than kidnapping. They can give them 25 to 100 yrs imprisonment, death penalty is too harsh when they gave Aluu 4 suspects bail and rapists also get bail. What's wrong with Nigerians way of thinking?

    I feel the death penalty is a bit harsh, 20yrs imprisonment is more adequate. The death penalty or life is worthy when life is taking. This people don't have jobs and no school due to ASUU. Govt should create an enabling environment for them and there will be less kidnapping

    Its too harsh of a sentence. The real issue in Nigeria is the corruption. People are hungry, no jobs, the politicians and there cohorts are raping the futures of Nigerians and little is been done to bring them to account.
    It isn't right for pple to kidnap others but most of the kidnappers are seeking financial rewards that tells us they have been pushed to the limit.
    I know Oshiomole personally he is a theif just on the other side.

    Could such legal noose tightening be solution to the problem of kidnapping and the menace of kidnappers?
    At the root of such heinous crimes as kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, etc is unemployment...
    Just returned from a trip to Edo State...
    Many Edo indigenes are not even happy with the so-called comrade governor...
    They're miffed that he banned commercial motorcycle operation (Okada) in the state...
    It is believed that most young people had taken to Okada for survival owing to unemployment...
    But with the ban of Okada by Oshiomole, most have been thrown back into unemployment and misery...
    There is palpable desperation everywhere in Edo State as we speak!
    The Criminal Code had already made penal provision for kidnapping..
    So, this move is only a tightening of the penal noose...
    I am afraid it might only make kidnappers more dare-devil, knowing what they stand to face if caught...
    The new law aint gonna solve any problem....
    Solution: job creation; enhanced capacity for crime fighting by the police, etc....

    why didnt OShiomole just say the obvious-he is looking for a free land to build his retirement mansion with government looted money when he retires. Why demolish the houses? Is capital punishment the answer to having a safer society?what happens to creating jobs for the youth who engage in such demeaning actions due to lack of jobs?
