The past three years has been a very emotional period for me. I focused my energy on work and to build back my self esteem. its been really hard for me to come out straight and talk about this because sometimes I pinch myself to wake up and not believe that I was a victim of domestic violence. I've been through a lot in my life, faced a lot of challenges but this is one topic I've tried so hard to avoid and have been waiting for the right time but I have come to a resolve that there's really no right time because every second of the day, lives are being lost due to domestic violence. I was a victiim of domestic violence in my marriage and that was the singular reason I left my marriage, aside other reasons.Growing up as a girl. I was always known as the sweetest kid on the block, before I got married, I have been through some relationships and for once no man had ever laid a finger on me. The first time it happened in my marriage I didn't understand it because I am not the type of woman a man beats but I guess there are no types. It just happens and no woman deserves it. As a young girl I thought it was love or his way of expressing his emotions, after every beating he pleads , cries and says it won't happen again, once again I thought it was love and made excuses for him. Over the years when it kept happening consistently I started looking for other definitions for it. I started loosing my self pride, self esteem , self worth, and most painfully i lost a pregnancy (Miscarriage) I almost lost my life in the process then I realised how serious and abnormal it really was.
I have heard and read a lot of accusations from ignorant people who don't know my story,I guess that's why they are ignorant. I was 20yrs old and very naïve to the world when I got married .“ They said I married for money“ LOL. I was married to a corporate guy,who had a 9_5 job in a bank, Lives in a rented 2 bedroom apartment at Egbe.. So do the maths! . I married for love. I did a traditional wedding. A white wedding and a court wedding. So that's how much I wanted to be married forever. For five years I hoped, prayed & wished that one day it will all change. But the last straw that broke the carmels back was during a heated argument he threw a glass jug to my face and I dogged it and it shattered on d wall. I saw death flash before me and I made a decision to save my life. I left my marriage.
Am not saying this to draw pity from anyone because we are entitled to our opinions and believes. I am not also saying this to discourage people from falling in love because its a beautiful feeling and I still believe in it. I am saying this to educate, share and talk about my experience as a victim of domestic violence because it is real.
Awwwwww
ReplyDeleteI can relate, thanks for sharing your story. You are indeed a brave woman coz walking away is the hardest part and you did it. I got the motivation to walk away when Linda posted that story about that couple where the husband killed his banker wife. So if you are in this situation today just know that you don't deserve it, nobody deserves it. Save yourself! The violence won't stop.
DeleteAwwwww! Chika I feel u die! I have been a victim too! I was madly in love with dis guy, we were engaged to be married, d first time it happened I tot I was dreaming but den it happened again n again. Every body around me never liked d guy even my parents but I still went ahead to be with him cos I loved him so much! But when I have to choose btwn my happiness, life n beating, I choosed my life n happiness. I jst have to let go! Ever since I left d relationship, I wish him nothing but death (God forgive me) cos I don't think he will ever change. Tank God for d nu law enacted by d Lagos state government .

ReplyDeleteCommon 4 christ sakes enuf wth dis nonsense plsssss.....u had 2 kids 4 him nd b4 den he wz'nt heating u,nd if he eva did u made him wen u startd sleepn around so madam short up plssss
ReplyDeleteMy mum saw this but she never left her marriage, seeing reading all this I look back and wonder why she didn't leave simple answer lover for her kids. A lot of African women still suffer from this same fate because of love for children and that if they leave another woman will replace them their kids will suffer. reason I applaud Fashola for the new law in Lagos. Educate the women... The market women host meetings and educate a lot of them are seeing worst.
ReplyDeleteChika I feel your pain,u made d right decision, move on girl u will soon find love again
ReplyDeleteTo d men, ur spouses need protection from u, don't b ironical to dere xpectation
ReplyDeleteNot supporting domestic violence but wat did she do b4 she was beaten? No man will just look at u and start beating u... Maybe she was caught cheating or sleeping around. Husbands dread that.

ReplyDeleteBut besides that, if it is true, u made d right choice leaving him.
Wow...before now I had negative taught about dis Chika Ike marriage saga but with this her public statement. Chika Ike U made the right decision. Woo unto any man that lay his hand on his wife.
ReplyDeleteI have also been a victim of Domestic Violence myself in a previous relationship to a popular celebrity in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteWhen it first happened I was only 19 or 20yrs old, I thought it was the definition of Love, he cried and begged on his knees every time. I put up with it for a few years and realised it would never change. Who ever says it will get better? My dear it never gets better instead it gets worse and extends to life threats.
I was scared for my life and walked out of the relationship and I thank God for today because that is the best decision I ever made in my life. I never looked back since!!
Thank you ,Chika, for having the courage to stand up and defend that little girl within. No body needs to endure that. Trust me, I have seen domestic violence and what it has done to mothers! I wonder what sort of man would hit his own wife? his on wife! May we not choose the wrong persons to take to the alter.
ReplyDeleteAs bad as it sounds, as terrible as it is for a man to beat his wife, I still have my stand on your divorce Chika. Don't bother giving details of what led to the beatings, no excuse for beating but he's a weak man to have stayed with you that long. U are a loose woman. Nnanna E(trip to China) was one of the many men that led to the beating...u forgot to mention. Happy spinsterhood. Try marriage again when u grow to close ur legs and open your brain! Goodluck
ReplyDeleteDil
Hmmmm sorry my darling chika,u actually tried 4 tolerating him 4 a long time.Cnt take dat even 4 one minute
ReplyDeleteTell that to birds... celebrities marriages like yours don't last. fuck offf!!
ReplyDeleteIts a crazy world
ReplyDeleteIndeed ur not a girl any man should lay hands on! Don't wori very soon u will be my 6ter in-law dat a secret till it happens u will know me
ReplyDeleteWe are too fast to judge this man,his own pain might be more heavier than what Chika is telling us,i have never been in support of raising fingers on any being but beware of all this carrier women.
ReplyDeleteIf this story is true I think u made tge right call **wink**
ReplyDeletewe are entitled to our own 'beliefs' and not 'believes'.. Chika Ike, u're one of those ppl that make me continue to have to the notion that NOLLYWOOD aint progressed past it's present level cos of stars and moons like u who speak and type bad grammar, especially in movies..! What d fuck! Anyway sha, who forced u to marry? Why are u telling us? I would prefer to hear from both parties before i even start lambasting u.. Sneezes.. Nonsense!
ReplyDeleteThank God for ur life
ReplyDeleteSorry about that dear.
ReplyDeleteNa wah ooo, thank God for ur Life sha
ReplyDeleteSo touching.....
ReplyDeleteI knw about it, sweety, don't worry, anoda man will come by
ReplyDeleteEheee, I don't believe a shit of what she's saying. Chika Ike that once slapped his husband in a club along Opebi road, Ikeja. I witnessed this live wih my boyfriend. From the look of things that day, I wld even say the husband was the victim of domestic violence...she shld just shush already, with her pity me message.
ReplyDeleteI truly admire her courage for sharing her story with the world despite the shaming and even blame African communities place on the victims of domestic violence. I am happy that more women are speaking out against this prevalent evil that sadly has been normalized, excused, even encouraged for decades! No woman deserves to be brutally violated by their spouse, sibling, boyfriend, uncle, etc & it is my hope that legislators throughout the continent work on mandating laws that protect those who have suffered abuse, have adequate rehabilitation programs available, and also put laws in place to punish perpetrators effectively. In the U.S. alone, about 1,500 women are killed each year by their boyfriend or spouse, the most dangerous crime threatening the advancement and basic livelihood of women is violence from the men they choose to love. Let that sink in.
ReplyDeleteWish u d best Chika...domestic violence is now d order of d day...Bev Osu more greeze to ur running mouth!@least it aiding some women to speak out!
ReplyDeleted hard way d only way* gbagaunnnn!

ReplyDeleteSuch inhumanity in dis 21th century.
ReplyDeleteLEAVE an abusive relationship/marriage. And u don't need to explain to anyone. Not neccesary. Thumbs up chika for speaking up! This would encourage some women to brace up and pack up! Here's wishing u well!
ReplyDeleteIt is well with you Chika pretty.... Bt nawa ooo Linda na u do her all dis interview abi wetin #jstasking#

ReplyDeleteAm also a victim of Domestic voilence..everything was ok between my guy n I,he was not married to me..they call it love, after my introduction, one of ma visits to his house we had an argument he brought out his belt to wipe me..b4 den he has already slapped me..i begged afta dat he begged n got me gifts..i forgave him but was still pondering AbT it..he also told me dat it's a normal tin for a man to hit a woman..dat was actually d reason why I ran 4 my dear life in as much as we have fixed date for the marriage I told my mum, everytin had to run 4 my life
ReplyDeleteMy mum was a victim too. I don't ever wish to be myself. D psychological effect on us kids cannot be over-emphasized. Sorry abt dat Chika.

ReplyDeleteBut its not nice to judge from your own story alone i need to hear your husband's side of the story before I can compare and contrast *winks* Nevertheless take heart pretty queen you deserve better ok
ReplyDeleteIt is well with you Chika pretty.... Bt nawa ooo Linda na u do her all dis interview abi wetin #jstasking#
ReplyDeleteIt is well with you Chika pretty.... Bt nawa ooo Linda na u do her all dis interview abi wetin #jstasking#
ReplyDeleteAbeg, we need to hear from d husband's side. You have said urs, fine but let d man come and defend himself. We women, our mouth sometimes put us in this condition.
ReplyDeletesory gal, fashola police shd arrest the man
ReplyDeleteThis is highly inhuman. How can a reasonable man lay his hands on a woman. My dear take heart. God is with u

ReplyDelete.................Lydiaabby
Chika Pele. To all women: nne biko, if he beats you once or attempts to, pack your load and leave him! Domestic violence should NEVER be tolerated. i believe a word is enough for the wise.
ReplyDeleteAayaaa!!!
ReplyDeleteDomestic violence is horrible and can be life threatening. Thank God Chika survived those 5years. However, there's need for peeps to learn how to communicate their thoughts in such a way that it evokes the right response(Linda has mastered this. See her last letter to her fan). There's need 4 coherence. I expected a letter to fans to be better constructed. Reading this,I got the feeling that Chika just wants us to know why she left her marriage. I expected more! I was expecting a fierce campaign aganist domestic violence! No woman or man should condole it...whether it be emotional or physical abuse! It makes you unsure of yourself and your worth when u do. I rest my case
ReplyDeletesome men are very useless like 2shot the wife beater..lolz..GOD will give u better man,the truth is that some women cant even say what they are facing in their homes..god help us all
ReplyDeleteVery brave....it's not easy to talk about, I know firsthand. Go Chika, I support your decision 1000%!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey dear chika so sowi u went true all dis .d lord is ur strength.I still stand with dis early marriage isn't d best @ all.

ReplyDeleteI predict some poor excuse for a woman will shout. "Go back 2 ur husband Chika. I no believe in divorce. No wetin be divorcee. D Bible say til death do us part. Nuttin make me leave my husby. Mscheew. Next!"
ReplyDeleteNa wa ooo___he must be hiding in shame now--------ur secrets r out____and dis same man will be somewhr giving irrelevant reasons 4d divorce,am crying right now please...most men beat dere wives..God please bleSs me with a husband who lives in america or europe wherre domestic violence is no nonsence topic-kpa kpa kpa I just call police 4 u and throw u out and still deal with u by demanding for huge benefits for my self and the kids..the man will just be working for us to enjoy,Divorcr is such places sweet sha....Chika its well, dis time pls be very careful..
ReplyDeleteAnd what if she's not telling the truth "Saint" Prince Charming? How is it your business? Like seriously? If you don't have anything tangible to say, then don't say anything....
ReplyDeleteWow, this so shocking. Domestic violence; hope all the men learning to ward it off and women to always to watch out for such men. Any little signal like yelling at you, could be a great sign. It touches me as well.
ReplyDeletediscover secrets to losing some weight and eating healthy

Well done Chika. @ all yea women beaters God is watching u on 10D screen n will surely reward u. Fooooools
ReplyDeleteThanks be to God u are alive and able to tell your story. So many women have been murdered by their husbands or boy friends because they just could not leave the abusive relationship they found themselves in. It is a very serious matter because when it gets to that level where a woman losses her self worth a lot of things begin to go through her mind like what will society think or say about me etc,but at the end of the day is your life not more valuable than what society would say? I left my abusive husband some ten years back and I got the worst criticism from family members but I did not care because I was the one being battered...I thank God that I left and God has been good to me. Like I always tell anyone who asks me now why I left...I tell them I left to stay alive!
ReplyDeleteLeave d marriage. My mum was in a similar situation but she didn't hv a miscarage ur life is worth it no man should turn a woman into a punching bag its not rite @ll I hope u find Mr Right
ReplyDeleteGod help U̶̲̥̅̊ find another M̲̣̣̣̥α̍̍̊и̣̣̣̥
ReplyDeleteCan't belief there are still sane man that beats a lady...any one that try dat is a complete f**l

ReplyDeleteI feel u girl, hope 9ja babes dat suffer from domestic abuse can start to speak up and dont continue to live in pain and shame beco of a loser that abuses them all in d name of marriage. Please keep these kinds of conversations coming and in d spotlight. Marriage is a beautiful thing and no place in the bible states that a man should beat his wife. Lets all stand up for violence against women.
ReplyDeleteIts a good thing, you stepped out when you still could. All the best!!!

ReplyDeleteHaaa nkan nbe #in kolawole olawuyi's voice#
ReplyDeleteMy dear its better u left n continue ur life U hv a whole lot in front of U dnt be reduced to nothing all in d name of marriage.
ReplyDeleteIf this is true,i really feel for you.You can still find love and remarry since you had no issue. If even you had,a man that truly loves you will still agree to have you as his wife.Every woman deserves the best in terms of life partner.
ReplyDeleteAll d best chika.n God's grace
ReplyDeleteThank God u left when u did. Now can we pop d champagne on ur divorce? Useless douche bag of a man. He should take his sorry arse else where. But Chika, am proud of you for taking this giant leap and I admire your maturity as well. God be with you. Am sure he would wipe ur tears soon. No woman deserves to be treated like an emotional dustbin/punch bag. Good luck Chika.
ReplyDeleteLizzy
well dere are so many tins dat prayers can avert, young wives of these days forget d place of prayers wen a man starts misbehavin. God hates divorce, so he'd definately make haste to hear d prayers of a woman in pains. Nevertheless women are not objects to be battered, dey deserve d best treatment, as humans we err against God and he still shows us his love.
ReplyDeleteYour reason for divorce is a good one then. It's better to be unmarried/divorced than to die in marriage. No man/woman is worth dieing for. May God give you a man who will love, respect and appreciate you for who you are.
ReplyDeleteChika should shut up her stupid mouth, she has forgotten dat der are people out der dat knw her very well, even to her parents house. I will simply say dat she is lying and a disgrace to womanhood.she should better stop lying on her husband for noting cus very soon her cup of shame will soon run over.
ReplyDeleteThank God you left the marriage Ooº°˚ . It is better to remain unmarried/divorced than to die in marriage. No woman deserves to be battered. If he can't respect you, then he doesn't deserve to have you. May God give you a responsible man who would love, cherish, respect and appreciate you for who you really are.
ReplyDeleteAMEN FOR YOU CHIKA! I AM PROUD OF YOU! Those talking crap about you, i pity them. Some haters will never find good in anything. When I hear of actors and actresses divorcing, I never jump to conclusions because you'd never know.

Woww this is so wrong. I just left my 3yrs old marriage because of this same domestic violence . I was also very young and was married to this footballer who doesn't understand what marriage it and couldn't draw the thin line btn girlfriends / wife and family. It was hell for me. Our union produced a child, even when I was pregnant he never stopped beating me. Initially it wasn't easy when j made that decision to quit my marriage bcoz of our child but God has been my strength and my very supportive family. Now am very happy that I made that decision and I don't regret it. When I look back, I'll be like 'how on earth was I able to even hide this from friends and family for 3yrs'. I am so happy now no more days of suffering and smiling

ReplyDeleteMany of you tell domestic violence stories without mentioning what prompted it. Am sure most of you got beaten due to your wayward, cruel, lazy, rude and dirty ways. Pls stop telling half stories.
ReplyDeleteY are u lying chika.i know all the story please.your husband caught u with a senator man friend and ever since den he decide to treat u like a bist.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful lady with a bitter experience. Domestic violence seems to be rampant dis days, pls o ladies beware & take caution. God help us all.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I struggling to believe her.
ReplyDeleteI beg go and enjoy your artists in peace and leave us in peace.
I meant aristos
ReplyDeleteThis is really sad. Her ex husband chased my cousin. Quoting my cousin,"He claimed Chika refused to hav children due to fear of loosing her good physique". I found that hard to bliv though.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad a very pretty thing like u got out of that shitty
ReplyDeleteAlliance u vowed urself into called marriage.
If I can summarize it 2 u why such beauty like was abused by that fcker u called ur husband:
He was very insecure of himself just like every other man day abuses their woman. I know he must have been jealous of loosing u or felt deep inside him secretly felt that he doesn't deserve u, so has 2 beat n abuse U enough 2 get u low enough 2 his level by killing ur self esteem with his abuses, n as u've testified here, u thought it was love just like every other abused woman thinks. Luckily u're one of d few women that woke up to this menace n foresaw what would have been of u if u had continued to be in dat marriage. U knew that probably he would have maimed u by splashing ur pretty face with acid or even killed u, but thank God 4 ur bravery 4 taking a great stand against his abuses by saying thru ur divorce, "I'm better than this n deserve better from any many man." Honey, u really deserve better treatment from any man that calls himself a real man rather than that insecure ass that u called ur husband.
Wish u d best n hope that u can find u a real man who can treat u like a queen that u really are...wink! wink!
Sad tale! I'm happy she is out of that marriage. However, how come even our stars can't write correct grammar. This is full of very bad grammar! We are really in trouble in this country.

ReplyDeleteHmm, wonder why some callous men beat up their wife even if she has offends them. Guess itz a sign of insecurity and inferiority Complex, no woman deserves to be treated like dog even a dog like been pet or cuddled. So U̶̲̥̅̊ celebrity woman beaters out there such as Frank Edoho, Alariwo e.t.c & there unknown folk... I hand U̶̲̥̅̊ over to day of judgement by the Almighty (Allah). Chika my heart cries for you. ReplyDeleteDomestic violence is totally wrong ,but we have only heard one side of the story, so don't be quick to reach a conclusion.
ReplyDeleteIts a pity......buh d truth is a whole lot of women r victims of domestic violence but dey come out of their houses each day smiling like their marriages/relationships r perfect.....women shuld try 2 knw their worth and come out of any relationship where they are abused...shame on all men dat hit their women.....*yimu*

ReplyDeleteChika lady, you are still looking fresh and pretty but do not forget that you need someone to bring out the specialty in your as a woman.
ReplyDeleteNever ever raised my hands to beat a woman! I never will.... No matter how much a woman pushes me to my limits! Any man who has ever beaten a woman....and for that matter. A wife and mother is a man with the lowest grade of self esteem and libido! #notodomesticviolence
ReplyDeleteOh sorry my girl, how wil a man not appreciate & treat a cool, calm, loving & caring damsel like u with altmost respect? He must be a dullard, pele dear

ReplyDeleteAwwwwwww! Chika hun,am so happy you left that monster you called a husband..he didn't deserve you, you're beautiful and should have a man who adores you and not one who lays his filthy fingers on you whenever he's upset,You don't deserve that or any woman for that matter. In truth,if you don't know a person's story, don't ever judge their decisions.
ReplyDeletePRETTY GIRL
That is her own version. Who knows what the ex husband has suffered in her hands that triggered all these she mentioned. Its totally wrong for a man to beat a woman no matter what but she might have a bad character and attitude as well
ReplyDeleteThank God for her bravery to walk away. I have firsthand experience of domestic violence. My dad almost sent my mom to an early grave. But she ran away for her life with her kids. That was 20 yrs ago, bt till date some peeps still ask her to go back. I know it's d -Till "ur" death do u part- syndrome of this society. Chika is an actress, crazy pple will think it's cos her fame rules her attitude, but no. These abusers don't need a reason, they just start and beat until they r sated. She's strong, my mother is strong and every woman out there who has -in this marriage till death society- walked away from domestic violence, is strong.
ReplyDeleteThis sick being called Prince Charming. Kindly change that display pic of yours, kids and teenagers do visit dis blog.Regardless, that's inappropriate. Honestly,What are u trying to project with that? ..Linda, I don't expect u to post his comments with such a pic.
ReplyDeleteAm sorry my dear. But d defination 4 marriage is silience.NO body has it all gud.U work it out n if a marriage will b sweet or bitter it lies in d womans hands.
ReplyDeleteHow sad...only one judge and that's God..may He give you strenght...life is once...make it count.

ReplyDeleteTnk God U left the marriage alive. Bt wait oh, waht happened to '4 berra 4 worse'?
ReplyDeleteMy sister better single, happy and alive than married, miserable and maybe dead.
ReplyDeletePele Ehn! Don't support domestic violence in any way cos I didn't witness any, while growing up. But a quick note to women... Pls and Pls watch ur mouth and attitude!
