"I am a victim of domestic violence" - Actress Chika Ike opens up

Actress Chike Ike pens an open letter to her fans, opening up about the physical abuse she suffered in the hands of the man she called her husband for five years. Find her story below...
The past three years has been a very emotional period for me. I focused my energy on work and to build back my self esteem. its been really hard for me to come out straight and talk about this because sometimes I pinch myself to wake up and not believe that I was a victim of domestic violence. I've been through a lot in my life, faced a lot of challenges but this is one topic I've tried so hard to avoid and have been waiting for the right time but I have come to a resolve   that there's really no right time because every second of the day, lives are being lost due to domestic violence.  I was a victiim of domestic violence in my marriage and that was the singular reason I left my marriage, aside other reasons.
Growing up as a girl. I was always known as the sweetest kid on the block, before I got married, I have been through some relationships and for once no man had ever laid a finger on me. The first time it happened in my marriage I didn't understand it because I am not the type of woman a man beats but I guess there are no types. It just happens and no woman deserves it. As a young girl I thought it was love or his way of expressing his emotions, after every beating he pleads , cries and says it won't happen again, once again I thought it was love and made excuses for him.  Over the years when it kept happening consistently I started looking for other definitions for it.  I started loosing my self pride, self esteem , self worth, and most painfully i lost  a pregnancy (Miscarriage) I almost lost my life in the process then I realised how serious and abnormal it really was.

I have heard and read a lot of accusations from ignorant people who don't know my story,I guess that's why they are ignorant.  I was 20yrs old and  very naïve to the world when I got married .“ They said I married for money“ LOL. I was married to a corporate guy,who had a 9_5 job in a bank, Lives in a rented 2 bedroom apartment at Egbe..  So do the maths! . I married for love. I did a traditional wedding. A white wedding and a court wedding. So that's how much I wanted to be married forever.  For five years I hoped, prayed & wished that one day it will all change. But the last straw that broke the carmels back was during a heated argument he threw a glass  jug to my face and I dogged it and it shattered on d wall. I saw death flash before me and I made a decision to save my life. I left my marriage.

Am not saying  this to draw pity from anyone because we are entitled to our opinions and believes. I am not also saying this to discourage people from falling in love because its a beautiful feeling and I still believe in it. I am saying this to educate, share and talk about my experience as a victim of domestic violence because it is real.

    1. I can relate, thanks for sharing your story. You are indeed a brave woman coz walking away is the hardest part and you did it. I got the motivation to walk away when Linda posted that story about that couple where the husband killed his banker wife. So if you are in this situation today just know that you don't deserve it, nobody deserves it. Save yourself! The violence won't stop.

  16. My mum saw this but she never left her marriage, seeing reading all this I look back and wonder why she didn't leave simple answer lover for her kids. A lot of African women still suffer from this same fate because of love for children and that if they leave another woman will replace them their kids will suffer. reason I applaud Fashola for the new law in Lagos. Educate the women... The market women host meetings and educate a lot of them are seeing worst.

  33. I have also been a victim of Domestic Violence myself in a previous relationship to a popular celebrity in Nigeria.
When it first happened I was only 19 or 20yrs old, I thought it was the definition of Love, he cried and begged on his knees every time. I put up with it for a few years and realised it would never change. Who ever says it will get better? My dear it never gets better instead it gets worse and extends to life threats.
I was scared for my life and walked out of the relationship and I thank God for today because that is the best decision I ever made in my life. I never looked back since!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thank you ,Chika, for having the courage to stand up and defend that little girl within. No body needs to endure that. Trust me, I have seen domestic violence and what it has done to mothers! I wonder what sort of man would hit his own wife? his on wife! May we not choose the wrong persons to take to the alter.

    ReplyDelete
  35. As bad as it sounds, as terrible as it is for a man to beat his wife, I still have my stand on your divorce Chika. Don't bother giving details of what led to the beatings, no excuse for beating but he's a weak man to have stayed with you that long. U are a loose woman. Nnanna E(trip to China) was one of the many men that led to the beating...u forgot to mention. Happy spinsterhood. Try marriage again when u grow to close ur legs and open your brain! Goodluck

  47. Eheee, I don't believe a shit of what she's saying. Chika Ike that once slapped his husband in a club along Opebi road, Ikeja. I witnessed this live wih my boyfriend. From the look of things that day, I wld even say the husband was the victim of domestic violence...she shld just shush already, with her pity me message.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I truly admire her courage for sharing her story with the world despite the shaming and even blame African communities place on the victims of domestic violence. I am happy that more women are speaking out against this prevalent evil that sadly has been normalized, excused, even encouraged for decades! No woman deserves to be brutally violated by their spouse, sibling, boyfriend, uncle, etc & it is my hope that legislators throughout the continent work on mandating laws that protect those who have suffered abuse, have adequate rehabilitation programs available, and also put laws in place to punish perpetrators effectively. In the U.S. alone, about 1,500 women are killed each year by their boyfriend or spouse, the most dangerous crime threatening the advancement and basic livelihood of women is violence from the men they choose to love. Let that sink in.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wish u d best Chika...domestic violence is now d order of d day...Bev Osu more greeze to ur running mouth!@least it aiding some women to speak out!

  76. Chika Pele. To all women: nne biko, if he beats you once or attempts to, pack your load and leave him! Domestic violence should NEVER be tolerated. i believe a word is enough for the wise.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Domestic violence is horrible and can be life threatening. Thank God Chika survived those 5years. However, there's need for peeps to learn how to communicate their thoughts in such a way that it evokes the right response(Linda has mastered this. See her last letter to her fan). There's need 4 coherence. I expected a letter to fans to be better constructed. Reading this,I got the feeling that Chika just wants us to know why she left her marriage. I expected more! I was expecting a fierce campaign aganist domestic violence! No woman or man should condole it...whether it be emotional or physical abuse! It makes you unsure of yourself and your worth when u do. I rest my case

  93. Thanks be to God u are alive and able to tell your story. So many women have been murdered by their husbands or boy friends because they just could not leave the abusive relationship they found themselves in. It is a very serious matter because when it gets to that level where a woman losses her self worth a lot of things begin to go through her mind like what will society think or say about me etc,but at the end of the day is your life not more valuable than what society would say? I left my abusive husband some ten years back and I got the worst criticism from family members but I did not care because I was the one being battered...I thank God that I left and God has been good to me. Like I always tell anyone who asks me now why I left...I tell them I left to stay alive!

  108. well dere are so many tins dat prayers can avert, young wives of these days forget d place of prayers wen a man starts misbehavin. God hates divorce, so he'd definately make haste to hear d prayers of a woman in pains. Nevertheless women are not objects to be battered, dey deserve d best treatment, as humans we err against God and he still shows us his love.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Your reason for divorce is a good one then. It's better to be unmarried/divorced than to die in marriage. No man/woman is worth dieing for. May God give you a man who will love, respect and appreciate you for who you are.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Chika should shut up her stupid mouth, she has forgotten dat der are people out der dat knw her very well, even to her parents house. I will simply say dat she is lying and a disgrace to womanhood.she should better stop lying on her husband for noting cus very soon her cup of shame will soon run over.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Thank God you left the marriage Ooº°˚ . It is better to remain unmarried/divorced than to die in marriage. No woman deserves to be battered. If he can't respect you, then he doesn't deserve to have you. May God give you a responsible man who would love, cherish, respect and appreciate you for who you really are.

    ReplyDelete
  112. AMEN FOR YOU CHIKA! I AM PROUD OF YOU! Those talking crap about you, i pity them. Some haters will never find good in anything. When I hear of actors and actresses divorcing, I never jump to conclusions because you'd never know.

  119. Woww this is so wrong. I just left my 3yrs old marriage because of this same domestic violence . I was also very young and was married to this footballer who doesn't understand what marriage it and couldn't draw the thin line btn girlfriends / wife and family. It was hell for me. Our union produced a child, even when I was pregnant he never stopped beating me. Initially it wasn't easy when j made that decision to quit my marriage bcoz of our child but God has been my strength and my very supportive family. Now am very happy that I made that decision and I don't regret it. When I look back, I'll be like 'how on earth was I able to even hide this from friends and family for 3yrs'. I am so happy now no more days of suffering and smiling

  149. I'm glad a very pretty thing like u got out of that shitty
Alliance u vowed urself into called marriage.
If I can summarize it 2 u why such beauty like was abused by that fcker u called ur husband:

He was very insecure of himself just like every other man day abuses their woman. I know he must have been jealous of loosing u or felt deep inside him secretly felt that he doesn't deserve u, so has 2 beat n abuse U enough 2 get u low enough 2 his level by killing ur self esteem with his abuses, n as u've testified here, u thought it was love just like every other abused woman thinks. Luckily u're one of d few women that woke up to this menace n foresaw what would have been of u if u had continued to be in dat marriage. U knew that probably he would have maimed u by splashing ur pretty face with acid or even killed u, but thank God 4 ur bravery 4 taking a great stand against his abuses by saying thru ur divorce, "I'm better than this n deserve better from any many man." Honey, u really deserve better treatment from any man that calls himself a real man rather than that insecure ass that u called ur husband.

Wish u d best n hope that u can find u a real man who can treat u like a queen that u really are...wink! wink!

In truth,if you don't know a person's story,don't ever judge their decisions.

  170. That is her own version. Who knows what the ex husband has suffered in her hands that triggered all these she mentioned. Its totally wrong for a man to beat a woman no matter what but she might have a bad character and attitude as well

    ReplyDelete
  171. Thank God for her bravery to walk away. I have firsthand experience of domestic violence. My dad almost sent my mom to an early grave. But she ran away for her life with her kids. That was 20 yrs ago, bt till date some peeps still ask her to go back. I know it's d -Till "ur" death do u part- syndrome of this society. Chika is an actress, crazy pple will think it's cos her fame rules her attitude, but no. These abusers don't need a reason, they just start and beat until they r sated. She's strong, my mother is strong and every woman out there who has -in this marriage till death society- walked away from domestic violence, is strong.
