Update on Okiki, the child born without 50% of her skull

On May 13, 2010, a baby girl; Okiki(Jesu) was born to the Olawuyi’s in Ibadan, oyo state, Nigeria, with a rare medical condition subsequently diagnosed as ‘Congenital Cranial Deficiency’. In other words, she was delivered with at least 50% of her skull unformed. For the Olawuyi’s, that day marked the beginning of a 3year struggle against stigmatization, discrimination & near hopelessness.

After rejections from several hospitals around the world, renowned neurosurgeon at the Johns Hopkins Medical International hospital, Baltimore, Maryland; Dr. Ben Carson agreed to lead a team of surgeons in performing a skull reconstruction surgery on 3 year old Okiki. After a review of her case history, the tentative cost of Okiki’s surgery was put at US$234,000 (Two hundred and thirty four thousand United States dollars). On receiving this estimate, GIPLC reached out to her local network of donors and phenomenally raised this sum of money in approximately 72hours.

3 year old Okiki and her parents under stewardship of Coordinator and Project Director of GIPLC journeyed to the US on May 4th 2013 to undergo her skull reconstruction surgery which was scheduled for the 22nd of May 2013 at the Johns Hopkins Medical International. However, complications have occurred following her over 14 hour’s initial surgery, as a result of inconsistencies in her medical history, in addition to the fact that it was a maiden attempt in paediatric neurosurgery. This has led to a further accumulation of medical bills totalling over US$500,000 (Five hundred thousand United States dollars), a figure that increases with each passing day Okiki spends at Johns Hopkins.

Prior to the complications which have arisen, what made a determination of the full cost of Okiki’s surgery difficult is that in modern times, it is an extremely rare (perhaps singular) medical condition with no precedence to draw indicators from. This latter fact also means that it is equally difficult to tell what other medical complications may arise; just like the fluids that were retained in her cranial cavity has posed an unforeseen challenge and may have led to a fatal infection.

As Okiki may not be released from hospital until all outstanding bills have been paid on one hand, and as we and her parents are desirous of her condition being fully remedied before she does leave the hospital on the other, we would like to appeal to the global public to support our cause in ensuring that Okiki gets a full chance at life.

Your donations go directly to Okiki’s account with Johns Hopkins Medical International.
We thank you for your generosity.

NOTE; The over 7 billion people that inhabit the earth, okiki is the first known patient to undergo such a treatment and still be alive, for her condition, on that scale.

The Global Initiative for Peace Love & Care (GIPLC) is a charitable organisation based in Abuja, Nigeria that works with orphans & vulnerable children aged 0-9 years. Over the last 7yrs, GIPLC in partnership with a broad network of supporters has raised the equivalent of US$2M through local fundraising initiatives toward increasing access to education, nutrition, health, water, hygiene/sanitation for over 4000 Nigerian children.

  15. Rubbish

I said it then when Linda first posted this story and a lot of ignoramuses wanted to have my jugular.

What is the essence of performing suh a novel surgery costing so much?????? You drs jut wanted to make a name for yourselves as pioneers in this field. Bloody selfish. You do not do such uncertain surgeries with hard earned money raised from the goodwill of others. Such experimental procedures are sponsored by government after several trials.

I said it then. We have hundreds of thousands of children dying from malaria, HIV/AIDS, diarrhoeal diseases. How much would it cost to help them??? Yet a family wants just 1 child to be sponsored with millions of naira for a failed project before it even started.

Shame on you. Let the poor girl rest. Stop looking for fame and what have u not.

I am a practicing doctor. So run along if u cannot argue constructively with me. Save ur insults for ur pepper seller mother.

If u took any proffessional oath or if you listened to the oath you swore.ul knw that in the profession,u must strive to save any human life you can!no life is more important than the other.life is not measured by numbers! You cannot let one humanbeing die jus because you want to save 50.do u know this girl's future?are you God?What if this girl grows up n finds the cure for aids or cancer?
Will her life not be worth that of 6billion people?

Besides, maybe you're not a parent! Her parents love her so much already! Evn if she is to die,dey want to know that they tried their best.

Pls show some sympathy and reduce the sharpness of your tongue n confrontational attitude.some decorum should be in place.ure a doc not a market woman

    9. N wot if dat child was urs? N d surgery isn't a waste of time n money... u a doctor n shud know better. For example if d first surgery carried out on one child to treat tetralogy of fallot wasn't done n just ignored, do u know how many babies born with d syndrome would just die n won't have a chance to live... if dis surgery comes out successful do u know how many children dat are going to benefit from it... it's not just a waste of time and money, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

  55. NOT TO SOUND SO MEAN BUT HERE ARE MY RESPONSES:

    FOR PARENTS:
YOU ARE SOME SET OF SELFISH AND WICKED HUMAN BEINGS. YES I MEAN IT. LOOKING TO USE THE GIRL AS AN OBJECT OF PITY TO MILK PEOPLE OF MONEY. YOU KNEW HER CONDITION AS SOON AS SHE WAS DELIVERED AND YOU YET ALLOWED HER TO COME TO FACE THIS PAINS - IT WAS SELFISH.

AT BIRTH THE DOCTORS WOULD HAVE SAVED THIS INNOCENT BABY ALL THIS PAINS AND IT WOULD HAVE NOT BEEN A SIN BUT YOUR SELFISHNESS HAS LEAD TO THIS - SO THE OPTION YOU HAD ON YOUR MIND WHILE MAKING THIS DECISION, USE IT WITHOUT BUGGING PEOPLE.

    FOR THE NGOS:
WELDONE FOR YOUR BRAVE WORK BUT I KIND OF FEEL THIS IS ABOUT A BAD PROJECT YOU TOOK ON. THE PARENTS HAD AN OPTION ON THEIR MINDS WHEN THEY ALLOWED THE CHILD TO PROCEED TO THIS PAIN - LET THEM USE IT.

HOW MANY CHILDREN AND LIVES CAN YOU CHANGE WITH $500,000+? NOT THAT YOU EVEN HAVE A GUARANTEED RESULT...

    THINK AGAIN

    ReplyDelete
  56. Speaking as a mother who has a child wiv severe brain issues,I can imagine what okiki's mother is going tru! D pain and hurt of watching ur child, knowing d child may neva have a normal life. But all one can do is pray and ask God to have mercy, do his will in d childs life. And do d little u can medicaly. But d worse thing she could do is to forget to live her life.and forgeting that other children will cum. I almost went cray cray wen my child was diagnosed. ... Left to me, I would say she should clear her bills, bring that child back, keep showing d child love, live her life no matter how it hurts and work towards having other children.it's not the end of d world. .. Hmmm... It is well.

  65. Wasn't antenatal screening and USS done when mother Okiki was pregnant. Pls they should adopt 'DNR' for this poor innocent child and use the money for HIV/AIDS children, orphaned kids, war / famine infested country children etc.
after Okiki is saved with tons of thousands of dollars, what next - there would be sequelae like mental retardation, dependency for the rest of her life.
It's a sad story, her parents should take heart and thank God for bringing her into their life's. even if her time ends up being short it was well spent and they would be fulfilled in knowing they tried their very best.
Almighty God heal the other ailing children of the world suffering from cancers and other medically curable illness.

Btw 'DNR' means do not resuscitate patients esp with terminal illnesses or their death is inevitable but make their passing away as comfortable as possible

First of all Ben Carson ain't looking for fame..he is already a world renowned neurosurgeon. If u read this poor child's case u will realize that it says that it is a "rare" condition. And if u are really a doctor u will know that before such procedures are done, the risks and benefits of such procedures are taken into account and also the quality of life of that child before and after the operation are also put on the risk scale and explained to the parents. I hope u know that diseases such as malaria, was once novel and it took trials such as this to get the cheap over the counter medication being used to treat it now, and ur last comment...ur "pepper selling mothers"...that so uncouth for a doctor.

Your words speak volume of your personality - wickedness and bitterness! I hope you reconsider your professional cos its not meant for calouse minded people like you. As for the parents, i praise their courage and great love for the child. its only love that can make you exhaust all options before giving up. Atleast, there is still life in the child and so there is HOPE!!! God be with her in all of these trials!

  84. THE DOCTOR IS NOT TOTALLY WRONG, WE LIVE IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY WITH MANY KIDS WITH LESSER COMPLICATIONS DYING EVERYDAY.

ON THE PART OF THE PARENTS, HOW WILL YOU WATCH YOUR CHILD DIE AND NOT TRY TO SAVE HER.

AS A PERSON. I ASK US ALL THIS QUESTION......

HOW DO YOU MEASURE HUMAN LIFE?

AT WHAT POINT DO WE DECEIDE A LIFE IS NO LONGER IMPORTSNT AND WE CAN KILL IT. HOW DO YOU COMPARE A CHILD LIFE TO THE LIVES OF A HUNDRED OTHERS? WHAT SCALE OR YARDSTICK WILL YOU USE?

    GOD HELP US ALL.

FOR THE DONORS, THE REASON THEY SPONSORRED THE SURGERY IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE A CHILD WITH A CONDITIONS HUMANS HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO SOLVE. AS SUCH, AN OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY THE CASE AND IF SUCCESS IS ACHIEVED, SHE BECOMES A CASE REFERNCE POINT AND SIMILAR SURGERIES CAN BE CARRIED OUT IN FUTURE.

NIGERIANS ARE WICKED PEOPLE. MAYBE TOMORROW YOU PEOPLE CALLING THE PARENTS NAMES WILL BE IN A SIMILAR POSITIONS, I HOPE YOU MAKE THE SAME DECISONS LIKE YOU MAKING NOW.

TO SUPPORT THE DOCTOR A LITTLE, SUCH A PROCEDURE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SPONSORRED BY THE GOVERNMENT. THIS IS LIKE A RESEARCH TO AN UNKNOWN AREA TO THE DOCTORS IN JOHN HOPKINS.

REMEMBER PEOPLE, BEFORE BEN CARSON SEPARATED THOSE GERMAN TWINS, NOBODY NEW SUCH A PROCEDURE WAS POSSIBLE OR IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULL.

  85. God help us with some of dis kind of doctors we have in Nigeria oooooo..dat is why pple run away from nigeria even for small minor surgeries...see them talking rubbish...they re not even willing to try and save dis child, all of dem saying kill kill kill..so u can move to the next patient with malaria and hiv...even those ones, it would be with Gods intervention that you wld treat that person to leave at least without injection abscess...God help Nigeria with dis quacks we have here...abortion doctors...tufiakwa...from the treatment of this child it can give an insight as to why she was born that way in the first place so as to prevent such in other pregnant women....some of you doctors in Nigeria should be taught courage and how to go d extra mile..

  86. i usually skip such articles because my heart sinks at the sight of certain things. I skipped this article the whole day. I don"t know where i got the courage to read it. Now i have a lumpy throat and red eyes.
Okiki parents, be strong for your child. Give her all your love no matter how long she lives and may God really really really be your strenghth. I can only imagine how it feels on daily basis. When i think that at one moment, i thought i had all the problems in the world, i feel ashamed of myself. What will the parents of this precious child then say?

Till now i can't read the article on the priest beheaded in Syria. I'll just break down. May God bless u Linda for taking up this little angel's case. Now i'm crying

  88. I pray for her full recovery, and hope the money can be raised to pay her medical bills. but I would like to say that the Hospitals in the US are not like in Nigeria, they child his not in prison. the hospital cannot hold her ransom for hospital bills. when she is strong enough she will be discharged even if the medical bills have not been paid

  93. To Anonymous @ 9:14pm, not only do you sound mean you sound callous!! May you never be in the position Okiki's parents are in!! Do you think they planned to have a child with health issues? How can anyone expect them to do anything other than save their child!! My goodness are you human? They are not milking their child for anything they are trying to save her life!! Do you know them? I do! And very well for that matter! To all of you saying the cost of her care is too much l ask you this one solemn question if Okiki was your daughter what is the maximum you would pay to save her??? Exactly!! You are speechless right? Maybe those who do not wish her well should be careful karma works in the most amazing way you never know what kind of kids you may have or the children your brother/sister may produce. Then lets see if you advocate for death for such a child. Some of the responses on here have brought tears to my eyes. Any parent out there knows that when your child is ill - you feel the pain even more than they do! Okiki's parents - May you continue to stand strong and live to enjoy better days with a happy, healthy and vibrant Okiki. May you be rewarded for steadfastly standing by Okiki! The world needs more parents like the two of you!! To all those with horrible things to say - "Forgive them "Father" for they know not what they do".
