Nursing mother commits suicide after baby dedication

Culled from Punch
A 35-year-old woman, identified as Ejobosele Okoruwa. has committed suicide in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government, Edo State, few hours after dedicating her three months old baby in a church.
Ejobosele dedicated her baby on Sunday, while she killed herself in the early hours of Monday. Her lifeless body was found dangling from the ceiling with the wrapper she allegedly used to hang herself.
Husband of the deceased, Okoruwa told journalists that he slept in the sitting room with two of his children, while his wife slept in the bedroom with their eldest daughter and the baby.
Okoruwa said it was shouts from his daughter around 2am that woke him up, adding that he rushed inside the room only to see his wife dangling from the ceiling.

He said recent behaviour of his wife indicated that she was depressed, but it did not occur to him that she would take her own life.

He said, “I usually sleep in the parlour with two of our children and it was not different that day. My wife slept in the bedroom with our eldest daughter and the baby.

“Around 2am, my daughter started shouting from the bedroom. I rushed inside, thinking that she was having a nightmare, but I was shocked to see the lifeless body of my wife dangling from the ceiling. She had hung herself.

“She had been exhibiting some strange behaviour recently. One time she would be moody; the next, she will just be looking at one direction. When you call her she would not respond.

“I tried to know if she had any problem bothering her, but she said she was okay. There was a time she told my eldest daughter to take care of the children that she would be going away. I thought she was abandoning the marriage. I pleaded and she promised to stay. She equally complained of some health problems. I asked her to go for test which she did.”

The Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Esan West, Mr. Akpoko Omuohowo, who confirmed the incident, said the police were still investigating.

    1. I had post-natal depression too. I ws so anxious abt so many things after I had my baby. My anxiety all centered around if I'll be able to make it as a good and effective mom(looking back now, my worries then now look baseless). At a point I statred to have terrible headaches that sent me to d hospital for several test that all showed negative result. That's when I got wind of what my problem ws and started doing loads of inspirational reading.

  7. This is a clear case of postnatal depression. There should be regular checks for women after giving birth to detect this and offer help if identified. This is what happens in the UK. Rip lady. So so sadddd.

  14. This is really sad for many reasons...it should also be an eye opener for new moms and moms-to-be.. I cannot diagnose what she had but the husband mentioning depression is a direct link to her mental state. In this country we always regard everything mental as crazy but the fact is there are other causes of mental illnesses ....

Most new moms are susceptible to postpartum stress disorder...the process of having a baby could be very challenging to both the mother and the child ..It is imperative that if the signs and symptoms of depression occur in a nursing mom that she immediately visits her health care provider..

For more information about the disorder click http://www.webmd.com/depression/postpartum-depression/default.htm

  17. Haba! Dats a very ungratefull thing to do, so many people pray for children, pray for a family and here is a woman blessed with all that, yet she chose to take her life and leave the children to suffer. Who will play the motherly role now? Life is so unfair *bbsadface*

  28. Poor woman. She was obviously suffering from PND ( Post Natal Depression). This is a very serious condition that occurs in some women after childbirth. Over here in naija, its sort of a virgin issue that needs to be addressed and awareness created so that unfortunate women can seek for help. May her soul RIP. They will soon blame somebody from the village or an innocent neighbor.

yea.. no uncle or aunty is doing nobody. Mental health is important and husbands should stop doing nonsense and help out/pay attention to their wives during this period!!!

  39. Two thns re involved: either no money or simply post natal depression; if d latter is d case, fine! But if no money two thns re involved, either d baby lives or dies of malnourishment! If d first is d case, fine! But if d latter, 2 thns are involved either d mother mourns and finally gets over it or she commits suicide! Since d later is d case, may she RIP.

  43. Here is my take- nobody knows what she has had to suffer from the husband or his people. Just maybe she had been suffering from some form of domestic violence.
Half of these women suffer and keep giving birth like the joy children bring would translate into the marriage but by the second or third child they hit the roof. Extras are mistskes.
Anyway it's just my 'maybe' theory

  47. Probably post natal depression. I don't know how many hospitals take it serious and screen for it during immunisation. The husband also missed signs. She's acting strange, don't overlook it. Get her the help she needs. I had PND after my baby. Didn't think of suicide but I definitely felt very irritable to be needed so desperately. Drove me insane. Oh I remember d way I cracked. Left baby in d sitting room while he was screaming at d top of his lungs & locked myself in the bedroom; texted husband dat I couldn't take it anymore. 30 minutes later he was home immediately. I was still locked in d room. Itz lucky I ddnt do harm to myself or d baby, cos in dat state u r not thinking clearly. Women shld really seek medical help. Motherhood is hard & overwhelming and sometimes even d strongest buckles. This is very sad.

Omg I'm really scared wen i read stories like dis, i'm currently towards the end of my first trimester and I swear I may be suffering from prenatal depression as morning sickness and dizziness is making me really sad nd bed ridden. 55. sigh.. people calling her ungrateful for taking her life n all... she probably had post-partum depression, depression being d operative word here... she wasn't even in d right frame of mind! all she wanted to do was end d way she felt, some women even go as far as hurting their babies... our society(Nigeria) needs to get more educated about stuff like this... contrary to popular belief, ignorance is NOT bliss

  56. Our public health system in Nigeria has a long way to go. The public needs to be well informed, in this case, Maternal and Child health. This is a very sad and depressing news knowing that it could have been prevented. This is most likely post partum depression. So sad...May God give the family strength for their loss and motivation to all the informed Nigerians to help develop our public health....Oh my country.....

  72. Its true that post-natal depression exists, and it happens to a few women, especially if you feel stressed during and after pregnancy. I had it and sometimes cried after having my very wonderful baby.
I was lucky that my folks understood and were always comforting me, but I didn't get over it quickly>
I did finally. Its so unfortunate that the woman took her life though. May her soul RIP. Really sad.
