Omotola talks about her Time Magazine honour

In April 2013, screen goddess Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (pictured above with Justin Timberlake) was honored as one of Time Magazine 100 Most Influential People in the World. According to Omotola, it's an achievement that will forever linger in her memory. She tells Encomium magazine:
"It's a great honour. Sometimes you really don't know your worth and people around you may just take you for granted. I was selected for a number of reasons. From what I was told, they watch a lot of my movies up there. The person who wrote my profile is actually the movie critic for Time magazine. He had been introduced to some of my movies. He also got to know about my other activities, including human rights activism and others. They also conducted opinion polls from those that follow what's going on in Nollywood. I think the opinion of the organisers is based on this. I wasn't the only person picked from Africa. There was another guy from Egypt but he's white and lives in the US. He is a blogger. I was the only black African honoured and out of the 100 honorees, they only picked 20 of our portraits displayed in the Time Work of Fame, and my picture was there. Not only that, it was given the pride of place. One thin I noticed was that from the moment I stepped onto the red carpet, I was treated like a queen. I was on one of the best tables, sitting with US Vice President, Joe Biden and others. I think it was a good moment for Africa. It was one of the few moments I felt like Africa has arrived.

  11. I love Omotola & wish her the best, but there're few thing I've noticed about her: 1. she makes it seems like she's competing with others instead of herself & just focusing on bettering herself/skills. 2. When Genevieve was recognize on Oprah, & CNN she never went around boasting about it. I think Omotola should be more quiet when things like this happen, because White people don't follow through & trust me the White man she said wrote her profile pretty much don't remember that much about her right now. You see, that's why I don't think she should be boasting here & there & letting things get to her head, instead whenever she's asked, her reply should just be I thank GOD. Moreover, TIME magazine isn't all that these days, they've had people like Adolf Hitler on there just to name a few. I wish her continual success.

Please, don't misunderstand, this is a great achievement and I congratulate her, but from the excerpt she's sounding like she has the (unfortunately) typical nigerian inferiority complex when it comes to dealing with America and the Western world..... You have to know your worth, girl! You don't need American accolades to define your greatness.

This kinda reminds me of Halle Berry's one-kind speech when she became the first African American female to win an oscar. Truth be told, even African Americans seem to have this inferiority thingy.

  67. I for one have no doubts about Omotola's talents and abilities, however I fear this young woman is fast falling head first into the trap that has killed many actors' career dead. She's so over exposed and goes to untold lengths to sell the form rather than the substance. For someone who claims to be a Nollywood star the only times we see this poor woman is whenever she's junketing around the world for one reason or the other. She has placed herself on such a high pedestal that i doubt many of her colleagues or producers will want to work with her. I hope she doesn't let this over exposure detract from her real career and more importantly her family. being the flavour of the month doesn't necessarily translate to longevity in a career. Enough Oscar winners of years back that are currently struggling to land even commercials in Hollywood. A word is enough for the wise. I wish her the very best of luck.

I won't be tribalistic cos I'm Yoruba too.
    Mercy johnson,Genevieve,and Rita are better.
Mercy can fit into poor, rich, widow, prostitute roles.just that she is stereotyped and she acts low budget movies.
Rita is such an impeccable actress.just that nigerian movies tend to have few themes.
Il like to see these actresses challanges with more complex roles.even Mona
Can't Nigeria give us movies about d civil war,the old oyo empire, colonial era.great epics.
Many of the producers are lazy and the viewers accept mediocrity.

  89. i took time to read this interview like 3 times. i dont think she sounds proud. i think she sounds overwhelmed. which is natural. this is Times magazine not Vanguard newspaper(no pun intended). read the interview again. she doesnt sound cordinated, she still sounds dreamy. like she still cant believe that big deal happened to her. hate or not , this is a BIG DEAL. even yankee big names add it to their achievements. why cant we be happy for success? beats me really. some ppl acknowledge God first even when they dont mean it. shes being real abeg.Genevieve gushed after Oprah acknowledged her. i watched it. its not inferiority complex.its true emotions. its called Awe! respect greatness when u meet greatness so that greatness can come ur way! for those calling her bush girl, some of you will sit near razz Tonto Dike and will even tweet it and perhaps not take a bath for days...hypocrites!!

  92. I cant believe the stupidity and envy naijas have for each other!...someone even went as far to say 'i sense pride in the interview'.... smh...pele o pride police.. ode buruku

Its called AWE you dumb fuck!most of y'all negativity is why you'll forever remain small...

WTF is wrong in her being overwhelmed about something she didn't even expect?? Not just every tom dick and harry get's to sit on the same guest table as the VP of the US foolish assholes!

I once met a multiple Grammy award winner at the airport and I took pictures with her and all....told my friends about my 'Hollywood' celebrity encounter... If I sat as a guest with US VP, I'll damn well tell my entire neighborhood and it ain't none of your motherf***ing business fools!

Linda post my comment oo as you saw it fit to post of all the OMOT bashing on your blog.

  93. As the saying goes.''Pride they say goes before a fall.Omotola should slow down on the way she goes about chanting her achievements. It is good she made it this far but if she wants to annoy God,let her continue and she will be so surprised what will become of her.Success is good, when people chant your praises and not the other way round.Though,i have never been a fan to this woman,i am happy she made it far but she should grow up with the way she,s handling her affairs.

  94. Whenever there is a post on Omotola, some crazy Genny fans will infiltrate it with hate comments. What is the problem with you folks? Aint you tired of hating? The other day Genny celebrated her birthday in London, photos posted here, you all had a 'worship session', some were intoxicated, she took a shot with a retired Arsenal star, some were angry with Linda for not mentioning his name. Linda is a Chelsea supporter-Lol! Nobody queried her for not celebrating with her family and daughter, but the other day, Omotola celebrated her birthday in Atlanta, so many rude and bitter comments from 'opponents', many were screaming to know why she was not celebrating with her family, and why she was celebrating in the USA.
Omotola take food from una mouth?
    Omotola take husband from una?
    Omotola na una mate?
Una nor get respect for una senior?

Omosexy was acknowledged for her works, why should that cause you guys pain?
    Is she competing with Genevieve?

  97. Nigerians!!!!! This is why we never get ahead. Instead of us to be proud and celebrate that one of us got picked, we are here trying to knock her down!!!! Did she choose herself? Many celebrities (millionaires in dollars) want to be on that list and they didn't make it. Stop showing your ignorance!!!! You don't pay to be on the list!!!

1.This post was NOT about Gen.
2.Comparing Gen to Omotola is like comparing a Toyota to an Aston Martin(with Omotola being the Toyota)

  107. hahahahahahahaha lobatan ooooooooo bleaching cream.... But truly am not a fan of any of these Nollywood acts but from what i know this woman has done nothing to be honored. Alek Wek has done more for Sudan, Oluchi has done more for Nigeria by being the face of Africa. Omotola no get NGO, Omotola no get school, Omotola no be ambassador to UN on any mission to alleviate suffering and poverty apart from a few movies and a bad singing career she means zilt to this country. Enjoy the moment anyway na your time.

  112. for those comparing Oprah show and CNN to Times magazine,i seriously smh for all of you. u'r just coming here to display your shameful, unabashed ignorance.unenlightened fellows. CNN is just a news station. anything that can make news can be featured on CNN.including rumour, false exxagerated news etc. its just CNN formed in 1980.. Oprah is just a personal talk show. Times magazine is Times magazine.Times magazine has been around since 1927! yes, u heard me right.they do not just fling their awards without thorough research. this isnt Naija, una hear?Times magazine is fucking TIMELESS. in the next 50yrs or more when they mention Times awardees of yester years, her name will be there. let me give you something more to hate on, she now shares such honour with various other presidents of states, icons and legends dead or alive of who some of us only read in books. thats more than some of u haters families up to ur 12th generation can ever dream of achieving. Times magazine is a standard in itself. be educated u illiterates! shes not my mother or sister, shes not even my favourite star, but truth must be told. Linda i order you to post my comment oooo
