Reps approve 14 years imprisonment for same sex marriage

The House of Representatives yesterday Thursday May 29th approved 14 years imprisonment for persons who contracted same sex marriage in the country.

This was sequel to a clause-by-clause consideration of a Bill for an Act to prohibit marriage or union entered between persons of same sex, at the Committee of the Whole.

“Marriage or civil union entered between persons of same gender shall not be solemnised in any place of worship, either church or mosque or any place in Nigeria,” it said.

Introducing the bill, Rep. Albert Sam-Tsokwa ( PDP-Taraba) said that it sought to achieve a far reaching objective by outlawing same sex marriage and provide punishment for offenders.
It also set out a 10-year sentence for “any person who directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships’’.

“Any persons or group of persons that administers, witnesses, screen and shields the solemnisation of same sex marriage in Nigeria on conviction, will be liable to 10 years imprisonment.’’

It would be recalled also that the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, had warned that his country would consider withholding aid from countries that did not recognise gay rights.

In Nov. 2011, the senate approved the bill that would make same-sex marriages punishable by up to 14 years for the couple and 10 for anyone abetting such unions.

The bill is expected to be sent to the Senate for concurrence.

    1. Unfortunately, no piece of legislation can curb the LGBT wave that has swept the globe. Being gay has become some sort of alternative lifestyle and those who support it are slowly outnumbering the conservatives. I think we should blame the pill and all-girls or all-boys boarding schools for fuelling this craze in Africa.

    1. Yes of course, because moral values have defeated Boko Haram and seen to it that there's a maasive reduce in the unemployment rate. Moral values have jailed all our corrupt Senators and high public office holders, right? Moral values have ensured stabilized power supply to sustain our homes and businesses. Moral values have kept men from cheating on their wives or raping other young women. What else have moral values done for us? Please do go on...tell me.
Once all the homosexuals are imprisoned, killed or forced back into hiding, Nigeria will become a better place...miraculously, automatically.

Until our major issues have been dealt with, shut the fuck up about morals and let me see hardcore moves to deal with the cancer eating into the nation.

    2. Once all the homosexuals are killed, jailed or forced back into anonymity, Nigeria will become a better place. Boko Haram will die because of course like all of Nigeria's 14 year imprisonment-worthy folk, they are all gay. Nigeria will experience stable power supply, businesses will boom, education will be affordable for children in the remotest regions of Nigeria. Yes, all our problems will magically disappear with the gays.

  23. They've started again with this pointless, cruel, ignorant law. We should not emulate the West in everything, but they have faced the truth that a gay like an albino or a black or a woman should not be discriminated against over a biological factor they did not decide. Whither Nigeria. With Boko Haram and kidnapping, not to talk of the dire lack of basic amenities and all that would relieve the misery of the populace, this is a priority issue for our lawmakers? This decision takes us back to a world of wilful ignorance and superstition, a world where twins would be murdered because it was believed only lower animals could produce more than one issue at a time. It's a sad and shameful day for Nigeria.

  24. God bless you guys for this singular act.

  25. Homosexuality is punishable by death, so says the Bible. Punishing it by 14 years is mild enough. We should hunt down and impale all dem gays...they constitute a cancer in the body of the human family....Call me old school if you want...

  31. This is pure stupidity what is your business who people choose to have as a partner? If your religious faith teaches you that it is a sin then let then go and burn in hell but to make it illegal? That's just dumb. In that case then, marrying more than one wife should be too ( I know bigamy is illegal but not under customary laws which happens outside the legal context) so why can't people choose to do what they want in private? Of all the issues that the country has gays and lesbians is what they are chasing. All I can say is may a man that prefers men not marry their daughter as theyll be forced to pretend and carry on gay sex behind closed doors. Maybe don't legalise gay marriage but to make the act illegal is just stupid. Whereas there's plenty men molesting underage girls that's the real tragic crime chase those people and leave grown adults to do what they want with their private life.

  66. As a man, I will never marry a girl that looks like a man, same will apply to my sisters not marrying men that look or behave like women. If we all refused to marry these people, who may never get satisfied in bed, who will marry them? It is more sensible to allow nature's ways rather than the will of men otherwise nature always have a way of fighting back, for instance, research has shown that societies with more "boys only" or "girls only" schools tend to have greater number of gays and lesbians, which is mostly learnt behavior, those that aren't learnt are clearly biological. And i tell you that it is partly the reason why there are many gays and lesbians in western world today.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm a very straight guy but I find this new law highly counter productive. Gay is a natural thing nd it can never be wished away from the world even through ill advised Laws. What 2 consenting People do in the privacy of their bedrooms should have nothing to do with Government nd Religion. People are born gay just as people are born straight nd asexual. It is not a Perference to have a sexuality, its an Orientation. Nd its not anyone's fault what sexual Orientation they found themselves to be. Its in their DNA. Its totally unalterable nd Irrevocable to change it. Denying these people love nd the right to feel nd love who they want to is denying them the power to be who they are nd what u expect them to be. There are bigger problems in this Country we should throw our weight nd interest on. This is cleary missplaced priority.

Hw many years for political thieves... Those of u saying this laudable say it cos u re nt gay or lesbian... EVEN GIRLS THAT HAVE ABORTED 20 TIMES CASTIGATE GAYS.. is it not funny dat a murderer can call anyone gay a sinner.... Nigeria will be the best country in the world if the only sin we have down hear is that some people love people of their sex ...misplaced priorities... Na God go judge all of una

    ReplyDelete
  69. really? Clap for yourselves!!

So, you can jail someone, who is possibly an adult, for 14 years because s/he is in love with someone of the same gender, but you fail to see the psychological damage done to another person who might be raped, abused or violated. How is that fair? How??

These gay and lesbian couples or partners agree to have sex because they love each other; therefore, sexual intercourse is consensual. How about a young woman or man that does not consent to sex? What are we doing to protect them and help them regain their sense of belonging and become very active participants in our society ? How do we punish the perpetrators? And spare me that very recycled "God will punish them" or "eh ya" "chai" "sorry"

    Pathetic!!!!

Wake up, Nigeria. Life is not always black and white!! This shows how very far away we are in touch with tolerance and diversity!!

It's okay for people to think differently from us as long as they don't physically harm us or intrude in our personal space. If we all had one face, one life journey and one goal, death would rather be explored than living because the latter would be boring. When we are different, we can wonder, admire, think, and do more.

And no, this isn't my two cents; this is a highly valued opinion. You're welcome.

Besides it is way too harsh 14 years in jail or 10 years for same sex pda. I wish we could have this type of law for corruption a crime that actually affects every Nigerian.

    ReplyDelete
  88. This law provides evidence pertaining to how luckless the government of Nigeria is. Once again, our leaders are focusing their time and resources on irrelevant issues and laws not in the best interest of the nation. Let there be free will, for those who want to be gay, let them be gay. Nigerians, please let us abstain from encouraging and praising our government when they pass such deficient laws. Instead, let us spur them into passing congruous laws such as those that ensure the salaries of politicians and top civil servants (who continue to embezzle) are slashed effective immediately. Our funds can be put to better use.

  92. Linda, if u like make u no post my comment!!!!!!

First of all, am a very straight guy..i love Women like crazy and I would never even consider looking @ another guy…that’s repulsive 2 me personally...BUT , I am extremely disappointed with these stupid, selfish, corrupt politicians who call themselves Members of the House of Representatives. Idiot people. They kind of laws passed by a country’s Law Makers are a reflection of the Priorities and level of stupidity of that country’s Law Makers!
All those in favor of this Bill, can I ask y’all a few questions?
    1. What do u know about Same Sex Relationships?

Who created all things in this world?....Who created man?.....who created woman?....who created the air that we breathe and who created the thoughts that we think?.....so before you go about judging others due to their sexual orientation/preference, remember that they were created by God. If u know u cannot create a human being, shut up n rest your case already.

    2. In our local parlance, “E CONCERN U?”

Yes, e concern u?...how does someone else’s sexual preference concern you?....does it add value to your life?....does it put food on your table?....does it put Naira or Dollars into your account?....Yes, I don’t like Fag’s either but I respect their preference….As far as no one is getting hurt and no one’s being forced…Fine by me…Knock yourselves out….If ur a guy n u prefer guys, Fine…carry on…its ur life….If ur a woman and you prefer women, fine…Carry on…its your life…it’s none of my business.

    3. Is it Nigeria’s highest Priority @ the moment?

Nigeria is the one of the World’s largest oil producers, we are blessed with incredible Human and Natural Resources yet we are one of the poorest countries in the world. We are a nation of Unbelievable Ironies: We have one of the highest levels of Corruption in the world, we have one of the highest levels of unemployment (75%...thats 7 out of every 10 Nigerian is unemployed), Our Educational System is full of shit….We have one of the highest pump price of Fuel: N96/litre (I thought we were oil producers….abbi are we not?)….We live in fear of Terrorist: Boko Haram bombing and killing innocent people (let them bomb Aso Rock joor)….Our Hospitals r shit (our President, Governors, their wives n children go overseas 4 treatment)…Our Roads nko?....I see no further need in giving more vivid examples of our failure as a nation…and What is our Government doing about all these herculean problems that we bear as a nation: Simple, they pass a bill outlawing Same Sex Relationship….NIGERIANS, WHICH WAY NA??????

    4. Are we not Hypocrites? Who are we deceiving?

Look at the number of churches that we have per street in Nigeria. if that were an indicator for National Development, Nigeria would be one of the Most Developed countries in the world. But what do we have?......Also, look at our Government (remember that Govt is a reflection of the nature of citizens of that country) ……what do we have?......Also look @ our National identity, if ur in Lagos, n u don’t speak Yoruba, ur considered an outsider…same as the North, if u don’t speak hausa, ur considered an Outsider….Religion nko?.....it begs the question, ARE WE NOT HYPOCRITES?.....Lets Learn to love our neighbors as ourselves regardless of place of origin, religion or sexual preference.

  97. Thank God they finally passed the Law. Such relationships are against nature. All those defending gays in d name of human rights are only living in self denial. The most sickening aspect is allowing same sex couples to adopt kids. Imagine!! They want the benefits of a heterosexual union in a same sex union. Idiots!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. LOL Nigerians make me laugh

Even though i dont agree with the lifestyle, i find it funny we are bothering ourselves with choices 2 consenting adults make, Do they want to marry you? are they toasting you??

On a bid to show say nah dem HOLY pass, or nah dem represent the family institution pass, they give 14yrs for same sex marriage (and we all shout YES in collective agreement).

Meanwhile these same leaders of ours steal BILLIONS of Naira from us and spending it on cars, houses, girlfriends...AND boyfriends (and animals sef, as i have heard lol). What do we all do about it? We all collectively say "it is well" or "God they" and go on to attend another redeem convention to pray for our own portion.

This is a distraction. Our leaders that steal the lively hood of our pensioners should get 14yrs, not some people who never did anything to you.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Being gay or lesbian should have nothing to do with the government. I don't see how it affects you or you life. Why cant we face our own lives and leave other people to do what makes them happy. I don't see how them getting married will affect you life. even if they don't say their lesbian, they will still be in a relationship but secret. Being gay is a sin, as some say it is in the bible, but isn't fornicating, getting a tattoo also part of it? Abeg we should leave them. I support same sex marriage as most outlive normal marriage. besides you have to know what is against you before you come out and say you're gay.

    ReplyDelete
  100. People should be free to do wat dey wanna......seriously....

    ReplyDelete
  101. "God hates the sin,and not the sinner..let he who is without sin cast the first stone."If there is an anti-sodomy law then there should be an anti-adultery law so that we can all live under biblical rules and principles. Those fat ugly thieves and adulterers passing such laws won't look at the log in their own eye, but they are quick to point out the speck in another person's eye.

  103. Nice decision buh we have more challenginG issue dat Nigeria as a country is facing.like boko ham they should do somfin abt it.

    ReplyDelete
  104. I need to just make this point. 10 years for "public show of amorous same sex relationship" abi? CAN 2 FEMALES HOLD HANDS IN PUBLIC OR HUG IN PUBLIC? CAN 2 FEMALES GREET ONE ANOTHER WITH A PECK ON THE CHEEK? You see there are acts that are innocent on their own that can be misconstrued to mean something else especially with the kind of corrupt policemen that we have. Like my father says," be careful about placing stones on peoples path. It may become a stumbling block for you."

  111. Unfortunately, it looks like only one person on the comments I've read thus far seems to understand the import of misplaced priorities. I'm not in any way supporting gay marriage but we have much bigger issues and they can begin to put laws in place that will make crimes in public offices difficult to commit. So that you must be raving mad to steal or misuse public funds. Security issues, power and so on need urgent attention and our lawmakers are giving 14 years to gay people. Make laws that make the likes of Alamesiagha unpardonable. Its hypocrisy. Has it not been rumored that some ex heads of state, VPs and some of the richest men in Nigeria have been involved in same sex sexual gratification? Let us get our priorities straight.

  114. Beautiful news, its good to know our leaders will not follow the West(devils), their mission is to abolish everything Godly on earth and to turn the world upside down, Nigeria will not conform! God destroyed a whole nation due to homosexuality, homosexuality breeds natural disasters, immorality n more to a higher decay. I do not condone anything immoral but homosexuality it at its peak of ungodliness, period! God bless our leaders and may they sit up regarding others critical areas in our beautiful underdeveloped nation. Bad Nigerians copy everything immoral from the west and it gets saturated then they try to make it the "norm", no way, I hail Nigeria, kudos mate!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Stupid people. Lol you think gay people are interested in marriage in Nigeria. This law had nothing to do with relationships. If gauss decide to have a relationship they won't be imprisoned because by law this bill applies to marriage. In the meantime you all keep marrying in your straight failures of relationships. Give it 5 years and this law will be repealed when the face of Nigeria changes.

In the meantime go and high a transformer.

  116. This is a step in the right direction. Personally, 14 years is too soft for these animals in human skin. Come to think of it, since I was born till date, I have never seen or heard that a COCK is mating with a COCK or HEN mating with HEN or any other animal after their kinds but human beings have relegated themselves to ANIMALS. What a shame.

  123. IGNORANCE is the down fall of nigeria...religiously it is wrong for same sex marriage but morally i dont see anything wrong. everyone is differnent how is this right in away. i believe everyone should be allowed to love who or whatever... not trying to be strained by a law.

  125. I pity for these oyibo people that believe that same sex marriage is a civil rights issue. if everyone had the right to marry whoever they wanted to, then paedophiles, incest and polygamy should also be allowed. Their society is turning upside down because now they teach that same sex couples are Okay to small children in school. I pity for them. gay people should be helped just like paedophiles. The end of the world is coming. Its not even human nature!!!!!!!!!!

  127. Nigeria,so full of hypocrites!!most of the people that were part of this 'epoch making law' are themselves bisexuals who still carry out their shoddy acts in secret;we have more serious life threatening as well as security issues affecting us as a nation that they should concern themselves with, than such issues of imprisonment for same sex people...I am totally against homosexuality mind you but i am of the opinion that a law should have been passed against the marriage act itself and possible adoption of children by these people, rather than a prison sentence...i mean are we in the dark ages??!we never ever seem to see the bigger picture of issues as Nigerians!most of the European countries like France(which unfortunately has joined the league of countries permitting same sex marriages)know the future implications of allowing this trend and that is why the citizenry protest and engage in serious manifestations and fight continuously to see that this plague does not come to stay but what do we have in my dearly beloved Nigeria? prison sentence?...and then what if i may ask these 'Wise men and women' wiser than d biblical Solomon ever was;na only God fit help our government.Na real wa!

    ReplyDelete
  128. it is against human nature, I actually pity for these oyibo people that think that same sex marriage is a civil issue. if homosexuality is allowed, then incest, bestiality, paedophilism and polygamy should also be allowed since everyone has a right to their sexuality. 30 years from now, a bestiality organization would fight for equal rights. Would you really want your children to be associated with children whose parents tell them that they can fall in love with anybody or anything .I pity for them. at least Nigeria has gotten something right. UP!!!!!!!!!!!!! house of reps

  131. i am so disgusted at this(and before y'all get on my case,i am a full fledged heterosexual)like someone rightly pointed out, shouldn't these men and women who like another person said are upholding the moral values of Nigeria(are they really?) be concerning themselves with more threatening issues?issues that border on the peace, security and general well being of her nation's people????the other day i saw a post of the woman killed by her partner, others use acid like wedding confetti on the women in their lives and much more.....and what is the house of reps doing about such issues and others in this country???how many shelters for battered women can the federal government boast of apart from those run by private NGO's? i really do think we have misplaced priorities in this country and until we start dealing with issues that require the most attention in the appropriate manner, the better for us as a country. Let us first remove the grain of garri in our eyes before we remove the plank in other people's eyes please!
