Hotelier & politician Prince Buruji Kashamu robbed of $62,000 on Arik flight

On Tuesday May 7th, popular hotelier and politician Prince Buruji Kashamu was on Arik flight no - W3155 from Lagos to Abuja, Time- 15h00. Ticket number 7253293631462-1. Seat no- 4F, when his $62, 000 disappeared from his briefcase. Below is what he said.
"I have never heard of this type of daylight robbery and didn't think I would be the first but the next time it happens to me, Arik Air should be ready for me.
I had $62,000 ( sixty two thousand dollars) in my briefcase and saw the money just before I went through screening. I noticed in the car on my way to the hotel that the money has mysteriously left my suitcase.
Arik air either has a ring of thieves doing this operation in collaboration with the operators of the screening machine or has a spirit that steals from its overhead compartment."
I heard that some people actually buy business class tickets just to steal from the rich men in that section of the plane. This is not the first time we are hearing about people losing things on the plane. The airline companies need to be more vigilant.

Upon getting home in Port Harcourt, I needed some money to pay the cab fare. I looked into my brief case and the entire bundle of 500 naira notes had disappeared.
I'm not surprised because when I told some friends, they said they had experienced same in Arik flights.

  31. That was how that naughty boy called Omojuwa supposedly misplaced his iPad on Arik Flight as he claimed and we didnt hear word on twitter. He referred to Arik Air with all forms of derogatory words until he was called to meet the Chairman of Arik and was rewarded handsomely then he kept quiet...Forget all the rantings and insults he dishes on GEJ on twitter, every one has a price. Arik bought Omojuwa's conscience and he stopped insulting them because he earlier vowed never to stop exposing the ills in Arik.

  49. I am neither an Arik staff nor have I got any stakes in Arik, but somethings shouldn't be take at face value. Just because this man claims he lost that amount of money doesn't make it true. For God sakes, he had the money in his brief case, which I presume must have being in the over head compartment of the seat where he sat. How can someone tamper with the brief case without his knowledge or is he trying to say he fell asleep on just a one hour's flight? And there is no possibility that the money was taken during the screening, it takes just under two minutes to screen passengers, so if it was at that point, how come he didn't see the act being committed? And moreover, for a business man, I will expect he knows better than traveling around with that king of physical cash, we have easier access to money and very efficient and fast cash transfers now. I am not ruling out the truth of this story but it doesn't add up in my opinion. For all that it is worth, he might not have lost that money on the plane, just my opinion.

How do we even know, sir that you HAD that amount of money on your person? Could you be saying that in order to DEFRAUD Arik air of that amount of money? What is your proof that you had that amount of money on your person? Where is your withdrawal slip from the bank?

I ain't no friend of ARIK, I am sure there are people working for them that are less than honest BUT at the same time, you no sabi sey NA NAIJA YOU DEY? VIGILANCE AT ALL TIME EVEN IF NA BAG OF GROUNDNUT YOU DEY CARRY! PERSIN DEY HUNGRY WEY GO STEAL AM!

There was a lady screaming bloody hell about a laptop she left in her suitcase that was lifted and later discovered in a back room there in airport. IF she hadn't made such a huge fuss, she wouldn't have seen her computer and as much as I felt bad for her and don't think it is right that these baggage claim employees steal from passengers, at the same time I wanted to ask her if she was stupid? WHO puts their laptop in a suitcase in NIGERIA land of crooks?

I don't even do it and I live in the States. I will NOT put my computer in my suitcase from Dallas to Houston airport and this is just within Texas not to talk of LA to South Carolina.

People are more angry at their stupidity when things like this happen than they are at the stuff being stolen because they could have taken better care of their property especially knowing where they LIVE.

  68. Funny enough, my Arik flight was canceled Lagos - New York by a single note on the counter in Lagos and I flew from Enugu, with the same Arik and they didn't feel like telling me dey canceled the flight. It took them 12hrs to get me a hotel room and dat was because I wanted to call the American Embassy to tell them I was stranded by my air line. On the day I was suppose to fly back, I packed my boxes and instead of sending a bus to pick me up, a truck came, I didn't want to use that but my flight was leaving in 2hrs and I can't miss dat. So I put my box in the truck and by the time we got to de Airport, my box was cut open and lucky enough I had most of my money on me, so the few in my box was missing. I don't know what to say to de Arik driver cause we never stopped and when we stopped at the Airport nobody was at the back of the truck. I was confused to be honest..!

And for those who don't know Buruji, dude actually didn't make his money from politics but investing his money in politics by sponsoring candidates and probably getting returns...
Basically, Buruji himself has got mad as in madding money, so him carrying such cash ain't something new, $62k is change to what this guy controls... y'all know the hotel in front of bar beach??? his the owner!

  76. Look, boarding an Arik flight is almost the same as entering Molue. You have to constantly check your luggage.

A while back, I took a flight from Lagos to Benin. I put my backpack (containing my laptop and other valuables including 2 3kg dumbbells)in the overhead compartment.

When we landed, I waited for the passage to clear since my seat was by the window. When I got up, my backpack was gone!

I ran out of the plane and headed for the arrival lounge, scanning the passengers as I past. The guy was just strolling with my bag on his back and He was about to enter the arrival lounge!

If you see how I grabbed him? He said he thought it was his bag apologised and vanished. I was so glad to have my bag I didn't even bother to make a case of it.

There's no way he thought my bag was his. That backpack weighed no less than 12kg! He was thief.

Later, A friend who worked at Arik told me that Arik management knows that they have a syndicate robbing passengers. They have been doing it for at least 3 years now.

  78. Cashless society; no man is allowed to carry such amount of money physically. it is already bad enough that he changed Nigerian currency to dollars- thus devaluing our currency. He should be sued for such misconduct.

  81. stealing of passenger items from their luggage is a common thing with arik air, it has happen to me and my friend before. I am sure some of the senior officials are aware or do get their own share from the stolen items.

I advise arik management to look into this matter.

  86. Somethings strike me from this story and various complaints...first - why should a nigerian be moving around with 10million naira cash!!!!! its jst crap...he should be thoroughly investigated..Isn't Nigeria supposed to be going cashless??? what happened to wiring the money, use of ATM's etc??Abi ATM's don't exist in some states ni??? and for the people complaining, why should you carry 2000 dols in ur wallet and forget it?? owo ee ti po niyen naau...OR why shuld ur fone get stolen? u no get pocket and BIG handbag?? Beta just follow these Rules for boarding Arik Flights:

YOUR phones must be in ur pocket or handbag
Your ipad must be in ur hand
You must carry your laptop bag with your laptop...NEVER EVER check it in
if its a domestic flight, you dont need more than N10,000 to get you to the nearest ATM, Bank or home...Make your further withdrawals on your way to wherever
If its an international flight dnt carry more than $500 or 300 pounds in ur wallet safely tucked in ur pocket..that should get you safely home or the closest bank
If you're gonna check in any expensive stuff, wrap it in a white cloth, and dab it with black spots and attach a paper saying 'if u steal this, u will die die in 3days -try it'
Keep ur eyes wide open while the cabin crew peeps r shutting the overhead cabin.
Since we know they're thieves lerrus be armed and ready for dem too...if its pant and toothbrush they wnt to be stealing; lerrus pity them and dash dem....it only means poverty has eaten deep into their bone marrow.....*LINLIN love u mwaaaaah!! post my comment oooo!!!!

  88. Sir,you are welcome to club.Just last year March I was on my way from the UK enroute Turkey and when I landed Muritala airport I and many other passengers noticed that our bags were opened and items missing. This came just after we waited like forever for our luggage to arrive that night.I even have a video of the pandemonium that occurred.Security operatives seemed to be hiding something.I understand there is a ring of thieves at the airport and they also include security operatives.I had a new shirt and a phone stolen from my luggage. The government should look into it.

  94. Well, i am a close friend to Prince Buruji and his family. Prince is a man of INTEGRITY, he will not say what is not. $62k is a small money compare to what he moves around with. i don't know how is happened but one thing i know for sure is that there are lot of thieves in ARIK airline. it has happened to me before. =N= 350k was stolen from my luggage December last year. they are all thieves!!!! however, hes not saying this to get pity from people of get publicity but to inform his fellow Nigerians about what is going on in that airline. A lot of people has been robbed and nobody has come out to say it publicly because nobody whats to be put in the spot.
i respect the man for his courage. we all should learn from this. May God continue to be his strength.

  97. Reading through some of the comments here, I found some highly educating while others are outrightly childish and ridiculous.

First, some say because the victim was described as a politician then it serves him right. But pray, which public office has he held or failed contract was he awarded?

Others talk about cashless society and all that but the fact is: most of us are pretenders. Tell me which one which one you would prefer if someone were to transact a business with you between cash and cheque?

For anyone who knows Prince Kashamu N10 million in not too much an amount for him to have in his bag. He could see someone in need here and give N500,000; another person there and give N1million, and before you know it the money is gone.

Morever, he had with him his children and other members of the family. All the talks about FBI and the like are all balderdash. If anyone has any score to settle with him, he should go to the appropriate quarters and not hide behind an unfortuante incident such as this that should be randomly condemned and internet to cast aspersion on a hard-working businessman!

  98. Yes, Arik have a syndicate of thieves right from the counter through the checking, to the screening up to flight attendants yet they charge exorbitantly.
If you are flying Arik thief~line, be sure to never let valuables out of your sight, don't even keep them in luggage compartment. You all stand advised.

  99. Last time I checked, carrying $62,000 in cash is Money Laundry which is a criminal offence. Arik can't be held responsible for that.

  100. I was on an Arik flight to Benin, landed, while waiting to leave d plane a guy discovered his 500,000k was missing,he raised alarm and they decided to start screening all passengers, while waiting on the line to be checked,a small black bag was discovered in the over head locker with the 500,000 naira, the bag had nothing inside except the money....the question was,who does the bag belong to,who has access to the over head locker after passengers have left......Arik has to work on this before all credibility is lost

The guy dressed well, looked so smart but got caught by hostess when he was moving up and down, stealing from white men's luggages in the air, about 28,000 feet above sea level. I suspect the guys at screening.

The security thieves scaning d bags are the one robbers, they tell whatever they see to those belgium rats loading bags. I almost lost close to 3m to them,if not that my bag was so strong,I guess they must have used the biggest plier in their possession but my bag zip was just out ofthis world. I didn't knw till I got to my boss's house to deliver the money only to see the harm they did to my box. I flee frm Abj to Benin and I got to knw when I got to Asb.my boss won't have beleived me if those animals had succeded.

  108. Stealing happens on all airlines, it is the airlines response that makes the difference. I flew in from U.S two years ago on Delta Airlines, I noticed that my box was broken into & the new IPad I bought for my husband had been stolen, after mourning my fate I just sent an e-mail to Delta, surprisingly they responded after various communications they refunded my money with apologies. I was pleasantly surprised, b/c I thought that the IPad was gone. Since then I promised myself that i will never fly any other Airline to the U.S except Delta.
Arik you have a lot to learn.

  115. Baggage handlers, passengers, airport screeners and touts who must have helped him carry his bags are not Arik staff but had some sort of access to his bags. Why have folks assumed its Arik staff that stole the money? Una too jump to conclusions Kate, time to be more objective.

Secondly why is he moving around with such cash? Yes, there is no law preventing you from carrying such cash, but must it be legislated before seine uses common sense? There are much easier and safer ways to move such large volumes of money. Sorry for his loss sha.

  116. Let Arik ask other airline how they have bn catching thiefs on their local flights, Arik is not just organise and staff are not happy b cos their so called chairman have no respect for his black staff so he shldnt expect them to put in their best to d work.

  118. I m an ex staff who worked in Arik Air. Two years ago an Arik Air Aircraft cleaner while cleaning the cabin for one of the aircraft positioned at the hanger found a large sum of money and handed it over to the General manager of the security department in Arik Air. We all though that the money will be given back to the owner after he had come to ask for it at the airline. But guess what the General manager left the country with the money and never returned till date. Of course Arik Air Mgt had to lie to him that the money was never found in the first place, case was closed. We all need to be very careful with our valuables when flying Arik air.
