While talking about her new novel Americanah, with Kate Kellaway of
The Observer, award winning author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said black women should embrace their natural hair. When asked
to give an honest description of her hair and what it says about her, Chimamanda replied:
That is the best question! My hair is in tiny cornrows; I have a big
ponytail on the top of my head. I quite like it. It is natural. I am a
bit of a fundamentalist when it comes to black women's hair. Hair is
hair – yet also about larger questions: self-acceptance, insecurity and
what the world tells you is beautiful. For many black women, the idea of
wearing their hair naturally is unbearable.
I don't care what anyone says...weaves for life! Hehe

Now it can be difficult to take care of at first because honestly you have no idea what you're doing but over time, it gets easier. You can do so much with natural hair! Many natural girls wear weaves and wigs to protect their hair so it will grow and grow in peace! I'm about to get me a few wigs sef! LOL! ReplyDeleteAlso i think this age old barbaric practice of shaving girls heads in primary school up to their second to last year in secondary school is barbaric!! Girls grow up not knowing how to take care of their real/natural hair because for about the first 15-16 years of their lives, they continuously shave their heads even before getting an inch of hair. Then as they grow their hair they always perm it or put weaves and wigs because they were never taught at a young age how to take care of their own hair. Its sad and i think the idea that girls in pubic schools should have to cut their hair should be outlawed!

I failed the first time because I did not know how to care for it properly by myself. But now I have committed and I love the freedom, I feel very beautiful with it.

ReplyDeleteWell I am natural as well but I wear weaves on occasion! but I love my natural hair actually I prefer it. and so does my husband. I cut it like a low cut 5 years ago and now my hair is half way down my back. The key is in whatever style you choose you need to take care of your natural hair. get it trimmed and conditioned and you will be great! the less you do the better. and stay away from relaxers they are the devil. They are carcinogenic and break off your hair I know from experience.
ReplyDeleteNamesake I used to have weaves but decided to go the natural route and trust me, my hair is more healthier and I look much younger. Many people here in the states always complement me on how good looking I am and how it gives me that innocent and natural look. Carrying natural hair is very easy. It's just that our society makes it sound like it is hard.

The hair is just one of the things we women copy from the Americana people. Our clothes, jewelries, toileteries, shoes, language, etc! She should make sure she uses leaves for clothes, cowries for jewlery, palm oil or ude nji for creame, black soap for soap and never be caught speaking any language buy Ibo. Msheeeeeew. ReplyDeleteI have been happily married for two years and my husband has been such an amazing person. My hubby is such a supportive husband, we cook together, clean the house together, he even helps me to take out my braids and we have had a wonderful sexual relationship until recently.
My hubby loves to have sex and I have learnt to love it with. Sometimes I even go to his office during my off days for a quickie.
But recently he started having some sick fantasies of him eating chillie (I mean raw nigerian pepper) from my cooooch (vagina).
He says he just wants us to be adventurous and slice chillie there and he'll eat it up and blow me in the process.. Of cos I refused that but my hubby has become a totally different person since then and he is even looking for a young hotter girl that'l agree to this.
I really love him and I don't want Chillie to come between our marrIage.
Pls what should I do.

Personally, i have decided to go on natural hair whilst texturising it once in a while cos all these relaxers end up weakening hair than helping it. We have been so convinced that naturally kinky hair is 'bad', that even children these days wear weaves and perm their hair. It is crazy! And Linda, maybe you need to find out what actually motivates your hairstyle choices before you boldly proclaim 'weaves for life'. You are a blog writer whose words and actions could potentially influence some of your young and impressionable readers. Black people have a long way to go to reclaim their racial pride and self-esteem. I am always amazed at how we as a people, have largely come to believe that the hair God gave us is a mistake and a burden. Also, isn't it sad that black women, who have one of the highest population of poor and vulnerable females among them, are the ones who spend gazillions on hair extensions and hair straightening products; keeping the Asians in business? If I had the power, I would ban the importation of weaves! Finally, I find it really amusing and embarrassing when I see black women trying to flick their fake hair the way white women do ... LWKMD! I though I was the only one sharing this view. Why will a man want to pass his fingers through a fake hair, it's so boring. At some point after the woman leaves your bedroom, pieces of her hair will be flying everywhere in your room. It's filthy and I see this as a complex issue and lack of confidence. Oyinbis have already made them feel that they can never be regarded as pretty until they put on a weave.. We still under mental slavery... Lol

Ms. Adichie is full of her self. Half the time, she doesn't think through what she wants to say before she says it. Being the author of a few half baked novels doesn't make her an authority on every subject. She happens to have long and full hair and not every woman is as lucky as she is. ReplyDeleteIt's not by force to go natural. All these other women who r natural thinks the rest of us are insecure abt ourselves if we choose nt to go natural. They dnt understand that not everyone can go natural n maintain it. I love natural hair n I wld love to go natural but my hair is so coarse it's hard to comb through it. I transitioned for 6months n I was going through hell with my natural hair so I say not everybody can go natural n if we dnt it does not mean we are insecured about ourselves or looks.

It is this kind of complex that makes black ladies to bleach their skin because they feel being white is better than their blackness. Why should you be wearing a white woman's hair? Why must we be like them? Why can't they be like us? We have lost our priorities and that is why we don't achieve anything. I am all for one with Miss Adichie and that is how she has been able to speak and represent us well....Not with weaves of those feeling inferior of their naturalness.

This is why we are considered nothing to them. Unfortunately someone like Linda buys this idea. Yes, she does and that is why you see her in weaves always. ReplyDeleteIt's no brainwash. Ppl who have difficult textures to manage seek to alter them. Blacks with unmanageable texture should not be judged or told they're not embracing their beauty. I'm natural and joined this movement to rediscover my natural texture. After 4 years is been ok because I have a great texture. It's kinky 4c yet for some due to density natural hair may not work. No matter if one is natural or not it has more to do with texture regardless of race. Ppl please ignore the hype out there.

For once I've seen someone who thinks like me. I just don't like them Wigs, weavons etc. Does it ever make them feel like it their real hair? Briades are bit better. I just prefer my woman to make her hair in any other way other than using an artificial hair to to cover fix or cover her real hair.

ReplyDeleteI love Chimamanda but I have to disagree with her here. Wearing weavs is a choice. It is not about insecurity or self-esteem issues. I think long hair is sexy so I wear long weaves. It isn't about what the world says is beautiful but about what I think is beautiful. i have absolutely nothing against girls who keep well-groomed natural hair, they look great. I am a strong, beautiful, smart and very confident Nigerian girl, I like hair that gets to my waist-line so I wear weaves.It is my choice.

There is a fundamental difference between using extentions that mimick your natural hair texture vs extentions that were cut off the head off a Peruvian, Brazillian, or Indian woman's hair. Do you see those women sewing African hair on their heads? No, because they prefer their own hair texture to yours.
2. Every black woman has some sort of course, "hard" hair. That doesn't stop you from learning how to care for it. There are books, blogs, and plethora of resources available to you if you actually care to learn. Your hair doesn't have to be hard or unmanageable if you use the right products and techniques.
You pple are unbelievable. Perhaps you should read what she wrote properly so u can get the message loud and clear.

Try it and see. Look for some of those your beauty of the day and ask them to send you their pictures when they wake up. You can then compare. ReplyDeletePeople asking why she has extensions is stupid! To add more length to her hair not to completely alter her look like a lot of Nigerian women do. They will wear 10 packets of weave while their real hair is as scanty as a new born baby's hair or Ramsey noah's hairline. Even Pete Edochie and Desmond have more hair than a lot of Nigerian women with their bald hair.

Black hair can grow to whatever length you want as long as you understand your hair.
We underestimate the beauty of our hair that's why a lot of us cannot show our real hair in public because we've fucked it up for fake hair.
