    2. You assholes have started to look for trouble again! You cause trouble and when people talk back you scream victim or jealousy. You see how quickly u people insult the yorubas. Is tonto or rukky sanda yoruba? Foolish illiterates. Linda please post my comment. Secondly, you people should stop being hypocrites. Nobody looks at dark skinned girls anymore. It has almost become a crime to be dark skinned. In the entertainment world or even to get a job as a woman, those are underlining criterias. In some cultures especially igbos, u people equate been dark as "dirtyness", black people are dirty. When my mum was marrying my dad, their neighbour then who is an igbo woman "that was in the 50's" told my mum that she would have married a yellow man, that where she is from, if u are dark u marry a yellow person so your children will not look too black and dirty. So u see how almost every igbo girl or boy is light skinned! It is an unspoken practise in your culture. I happen to be dark skinned. All my friends are very light and are igbos for that matter. They are naturally light but still bleach till they "look like ghost" when we go out together, nobody looks at me, because am the dark one or d devil in the midst of yellow angels. If not because I have a strong heart and I no who I am. I would have started bleaching cus my friends advised me to bleach. Truth is I don't get noticed as much as they do. I don't get compliments when am around them. Only very few times would someone tell me that my skin is good even though I know am pretty. Don't preach about lowself esteem or validation. Everybody needs a little validation or assurance sometimes. You foolish men! Men that don't think beyond their pants are the major problem. Because u love flashy things. So don't come here talking about how good black skin is!. How many of u is dating a dark skinned girl? Rubbish! Don't mind my english! Am sleep-typing.

    5. @12:15,Sorry to say but you have a very low self esteem, but then again maybe you have just be hanging around the wrong crowd,am chocolate skinned and have never used any cream on my body not even vasline, and still my skin is flawless and trust me nor be mouth anywhere I go,I turn heads even when I hang out with girls who are light skinned I always get the first toaster(and God is my witness to that)its not about ur skin color its about how you carry yourself as a woman, personally I don't think most fair girls are pretty, majority of them are just attractive and look pretty from afar, but when they move closer to you, most of them are so not pretty, mind you my elder sister is light skinned, but when we traveled out of the country to go mark my aunts 50th birthday,we where having dinner and a white woman walked up to our table just to compliment my look,I remember a whole lot of pop corn popping out of my head that day(lol)PS sometimes when you go out with ur friend and she gets all the attention sometimes its not ordinary if you know what some girls do just to attract men you will be amazed(I mean spiritual stuff)I have a friend who was always complaining about how her friend gets all the attention when ever they go out,and they later found out the babe is into heavy JAZZ so she ditched the bitch(lol)so my dear stop looking down on urself just cos you feel ur complexion is not good enough, instead learn how to carry your self with grace and you will be amazed the kind of attention you will get.

    7. This is a very interesting subject matter ohhh. However, this light skin dark skin syndrome doesnt only existbin Africa, but in America and south America. I have had numerous conversations with women in America, who refuse to date a dark skinned man. Some even insist on having babies with worthless bums as long as their complexion is on the light side. This stupid as social epidemic dates back to colonia l days, slavery and the civil rights movement. The black man has always been taught to hate himself. Made to believe that anything white is perfect, while being black is negative and wrong. Ps see oxfords dictionary defination of black. Black women and men allover the world alter their complexion, distroying their skin. We have been programmed and brain washed to believe that this self repudiation. This is a major issue. Its amazing now how caucasians all over the world tan rigorously to get a darker skin tone. This life nah wah. Black is beautiful.

LMAO! I love your guts, mama 3. You surely chose the "right" time to ask. @ the boss: my dear I feel you madly and badly! A lot of people are hypocrites to the core! Personally, I'm yet to understand why people, especially women, as sooooo emotional about people who bleach! How is it any of your concern? From the vemonous comments people throw at ladies who bleach/lighten their skin, it's clear you don't know them enough to care so why all the anger? If you get so upset over someone else's skin, doesn't that show you too have some underlining issues? Please some of you need to mind your own business, hypocrites! Can you imagine a lady(not a man ohhh!) bending over backwards to befriend me because am bi-racial? I know the unfair advantages I have over my friends just because of my complexion, it's so sad! Let's be honest, only very few people still think black is beautiful. A case in point is Mercy Johnson's baby and Osaze Odewinge's baby(not sure of the spelling). There were enough "awwwwww"s for the latter but some very uncomplimentary comments about the former and the sad part is if you look beyond skin colour, you'll notice the beautiful features Purity has. She has lovely eyes and adorable cheeks but her offense is her dark skin yet some people who blasted the sweet child will come here now and blast women who bleach??? Oh puleaseeee! Give yourselves a break joooor!

    10. Don't mind these hypocrites!!! Men encourage it!!! I had a friend once that told me that I needed to bleach that I'll be more beautiful if I'm lighter that don't I c hw guys love fair gals??That day he regretted the day he was born!Guys even go ahead to buy these creams and drugs 4 the gals and nw they are complaining!!! The white's,indians, latinos and black americans that bleach,we hail them as being so beautiful.

    1. Asians bleach mannnnn!!! They bleach. There was even a BBC morning dedicated to this in 2008. When darker Indians were mad about a bleaching advert on TV. Imagine they even have an association for darker skinned Indians??!!??
Then the Jamaicans, the African Americans, rihanna, Kerry hilson, tyra banks, beyonce (my idol) to name a few.

And yes Nigerians bleach too no question about that. Other races tan too which could also be detrimental to health...

So my question is, On whose note is it bad to bleach or tan??? Who sets the rules??? Infact I just ordered a bottle of skin lightening thingy to try, it's in the post now..... Sue me!!!

  11. this is absolute rubbish, 8 in 10 women in Nigeria bleaching their skin is a complete lie, most Nigerian women do NOT bleach their skin, these stupid media bigots and their false and unreliable statistics, have they checked the house of every Nigerian woman to see if she bleaches, in a country where many live in poverty I doubt if the money to buy bleaching products is available and a priority. while a small percent of some Nigerians do bleach, I don't see any media stories concerning bleaching in Asian countries. so 80% of all Nigerian women thats over 40 million women, what a lie

  33. For the 1st time I am going to be very blunt on Linda's blog but I hate people that bleach, as in that is really low esteem. The white folks wish they were darker than us cuz light skinned tends to age quickly. I myself I am light skinned by birth but any attempt to bleach or make it brighter na 'afin' confirm.
There are dark beautiful girls out there that don't need bleaching. Oluchi and Abgani(MissWorld) are examples.

Most young girls are doing everything possible to get light, from popping pills to taking injections that slow down melanin production. I rili think more awareness should be created about the dangers of bleaching. Dark skinned girls are also beautiful, very beautiful. I mean look at the likes of oluchi, agbani, genevive these are beautiful women, dark and beautiful. As for the likes of ruki sanda and tonto and ogey okoye, I'm not sure I can say the same. And in a couple of years, their skin will only get worse, dark patches, kidney problems and even cancer. Nigerian girls pls think again about this bleaching thing, the long term side effects out way the benefits pls.

  91. This report is both ignorant and misleading!!

Not all skin bleaching causes health hazards. There are save and natural ingredients that will gradually change your skin tone without all the kidney failure etc being touted in this report.

What NAFDAC needs to do is stop the importation of creams with hydroquinone, Mercury and Steroid as they are the ones dangerous to health.

Lots of celebrities in the USA bleach their skin and you don't see them with multi-colors or green veins.

Bleaching is like sex; you can NEVER successfully stop people from doing it, you can only show them the safe way to.

Cos, I'm like 3 shades darker that before I turned 10 yrs old, not to talk of my toddler pictures. My skin tone was soo creamy. so pls, I tone. And I use natural ingredients like mulberry extract and licorice. And my skin isn't damaged by too much stress from work and harsh harmattan or heat anymore. And pls!! They should have gone to proper cosmetic stores where people who have more knowledge on skin care would have told them the difference btwn altering ur skn tone and maintaining ur natural shade in this hot humid weather. They went to d hood, to talk to illiterates who can't even speak English? And Femi kuti, a musician? Wat kind of info were they expecting? Mscheeeew! I still know a lot of dark skinned pretty girls. So, wrong statistics and really not fair on Nigeria! Do we hv to be everyone's punching bag? Has nicki minaj's skin tone not changed? Beyonce Nko? Is she not lighter that a decade ago? Even Rihanna! So they should spare us d crap.

Some years back Igbo women were leading the bleaching entourage until according to Warri people, they called themselves to order nationwide in their townhall meetings( Chineke God, Biko nyem one pathfinder and a yellow babe to match). Yorubas took the cue from them and seem to be leading now. Generally, though many female tertiary education students tend to bleach. As for me, I was born light skinned and so I must BRING OUT MY REAL COLOUR.

  101. I am dark skinned and have never felt the urge to bleach my skin. I live in the U.S, black and white people tell me how lovely my skin is. When I was in Nigeria people would tell me how beautiful my skin is, and tell me not to bleach. "Duduyemi" was my name back then :) I must admit, I have a very low self-esteem, but it isn't because of my completion. I get this almost everyday "you're so beautiful, and you have a lovely skin." If anyone feels they need to bleach their skin to look beautiful, I think they have no idea what beauty is. If you don't accept yourself the way you are, no one will. I hope people learn to accept themselves the way they are. Be safe!

  104. Did I hear that reporter say that 8 out of 10 Nigerian women bleach?!! That is inaccurate and absolutely ludicrous data! Where do these international news organisations / bodies get these funny statistics from? I am in my forties and throughout my life, the women around in the places I schooled, worked and lived that used / use skin bleaching / toning products have always been a small minority. Even among the Yorubas that I have noticed a penchant for bleaching among the women (and men), the number of people who actually practice it are no where near 80% of the population. So, where did this reporter get the 8 out of 10 statistics? These international agencies need to start really checking their data sources. This reminds me of the popular one of over 70% of Nigerians living on less than 1$ (about N158) / day. Haba! Even in my fairly poor village, the vast majority of the people live on more than a dollar a day!

    ReplyDelete
  105. Bleaching is a reflection of the widespread low self-esteem that is pervasive in communities of colour. The White colonialists did a number on their colonies, and now everyone believes that White is right and there is some sort of skin colour hierarchy with White at the top of the totem pole and dark skin at the bottom. Black people worship White skin and if you can't access that, any light skin tone. Why do you think the majority of the Nigerian male artistes who have 'made it' have a light skinned wife or significant other? What of the way people go out of their way to admire fair skinned children and ignore dark skinned kids, even in cases where the dark skinned child is actually the beautiful one? In University, an extremely light skinned daughter of an ugly governor of one of the South-Eastern states attended my school. She was the female copy of her father and was just as ugly as he was, but because of her light skin (and probably in conjunction with her father's status) she was considered pretty and was not short of male admirers! Until, we stop seeing White skin as next-to-God, we will continue to have a society that stupidly equates light skin to good looks and hence, we will continue to have young women who risk their health to become 'beautiful'.
