Man jailed 45 years for stealing Gov Aregbesola’s N50k phone

A 31 year old named Kevin Ighodalo (pictured above), has been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court for stealing a Sony Ericsson phone said to be worth about N50,000 belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State. Below is how Punch is reporting it
Ighodalo stole the phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27, 2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College, Osogbo.
Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud.
He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion.
Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term, held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor.

The jail term, which Falola pronounced will run concurrently, means that Ighodalo will spend the next 10 years behind bars.

Assistant principal state counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora, told the court that the convict had served six-year imprisonment in Ikoyi prison custody in connection with a murder case in 2005.

Counsel to Ighodalo, Mr. Ameachi Ngwu, prayed the court to commit him to community service, stressing that the convict should not be incarcerated but rather be placed where people could see him as a convict.

Being a nigerian thief, there are two things involved, its either u are a big thief or u are a small thief, if u are a big thief u are safe, but if u are a small thief there are two things involved, its either u steal from the masses or u steal from the politicians, if u steal from the masses u are safe, but if u steal from the politicians there are two things involved, its either u are sent to a prison or shot to death, if u are sent to a prison u are safe, but if u are shot to death, there is only one thing involved, u shall go to hell..Gbam

    4. So now all thieves, rapists, murderers, kidnappers should no longer serve jail terms again for their crimes? Moreover if you read & understood the story, u 'll see that he used the phone to dupe other people while impersonating the governor. Finally the sentences are concurrent, so he serves 10yrs.

Agree,we have lots of corrupt leaders in our system, who haven't faced penalty for their crimes, but that doesnt make this guy's crime justifiable. He's even served 6yrs jail term b4. Dis guy is a die hard unrepentant criminal for Godsake.
Its quite unfortunate our system is so corrupt that if a common man criminal is convicted justly, we cry foul play n talk abt corrupt politicians instead of being happy that we rid d society of one mor criminal. Wat a shame nigeria.

  59. His not going to prison for 45 years. Technically his prison time is only 10 years. It says that the sentence would run concurrently meaning that the prison time for the five counts are running all at the same time. Since the longest sentence is 10 years that is how long he would be in prison.

What I don't get is how the man had been imprisoned for six years in conjunction to a 2005 murder case but stole a cell phone in 2010?

    ReplyDelete
  60. My main issue is he stole the phone in 2010 and he is sentenced in 2013 so between that time what was he doing? Was he in custody or what? Will that time be substracted from his jail time?
I feel sorry for him cos 45 yrs is no joke, but he committed a crime, yeah d phone is worth 50k but he scammed other pple and made more money too...
I wish they could reduce it..
Anyways he committed d crime, he should pay for it, cos those pple he defrauded noone knows what they went thru with d loss of their money..
    Too bad!

  61. Linda ,d guy is an ex-convict who jst got releasd from prison after serving jail term for murder

It very unfair, so should happen to people that steal million in the government, and received state pardon. how much is N50k for such a year prison, how old is the man and let add 45 year to his present age. please let try and speak to this our government to be considerate, and not saying what the man does is very good, but let us be very considerate sometime. 5 year i think is enough for him or even pardon him.

  69. *Steal a phone worth N50k and spend the next 10yrs in jail

*Murder someone and spend the next 6yrs in jail

  72. *Linda, LIBers are oversimplifying the comparison btwn billion naira crimes and thousand naira once. This guy was sentenced based on the law of the land. Remember that he is a repeat offender hence a danger to the society. He not only stole the phone but dupped people with it. You can argue for stiffer penalties for large money criminal but not less once for repeat/ dangerous offenders like this guy. If you've ever been their victim, you will understand what i'm saying

    ReplyDelete
  73. U guys shuld go back n read carefully. Stealing was nt ok for him yet he went on to impersonate wit d gov's phone collecting money frm pple.he deserve wht he got when he is done wit d jail term am sure he will stay away frm crime forever

  112. Quoting Babasola Kuti
"For stealing a N50,000 Sony Ericsson phone belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, a 31-year-old Kelvin Ighodalo has been sentenced to 45-year imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court.

Facebook reporters sensationalising stories but then again punch is guilty of doing the same..any fool who can read knows the following facts were clearly stated..
How can you pretend to have missed the following:

    1. Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud.

    2. He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion.

    4. The jail term, which Falola pronounced will run concurrently, means that Ighodalo will spend the next 10 years behind bars.

    5. Assistant principal state counsel, Mr Biodun Badiora, told the court that the convict had served six-year imprisonment in Ikoyi prison custody in connection with a murder case in 2005.

Please you people should go back to school."

  113. linda dear, the jail term is to run concurrently so why did u say he will spend 45years in jail. nobody can legally spend that amount of years in jail becos even life imprisonment runs for 20years. so this man in question is to spend 10years and not 45yrs and mind u, he still has a right to appeal. linda stop misdirecting pple, abeg

  114. Then all governors and their officials should to jail forever. cos they steal more than that. rubbish

  116. DeMyk Says: Let us not allow our emotions or hatred for the thieving ruling class becloud our logical sense of reasoning. A second time offender is almost going to be a serial offender. What other pardon does this guy need? He has gone to jail before now for murder, he stole this phone and did not sell it for 5k like most petty thieves would but instead was impersonating the governor and swindling people and you think he deserves pity? If a certain James who had been convicted twice in London had been giving 45 years when he also stole building materials in Nigeria, Delta state would have been spared the Ibori menace. The jail term which serves him right is running concurrently so he gets ONLY 10yrs. And a thief is never innocent because a bigger thief was not caught..

  117. Complete BS. The characters in the Nigerian law system are seriously flawed. How much did this useless justice to the society get from this governor and why is this governor allowing such ruling? In America is not 45 years sentence to show you have power(as in the governor) it is an opportunity to learn and improve the security system around the governor.

  118. Dear Linda I will be great full, u can get a reaction from the Nigeria Bar Association in respect to what there colleague did

  119. It is sad in this day that people are only interested in sensationalism aspect of events. The guy sentenced was an ex-convict who was pardon to go and sin no more only for him to steal the Governor's phone and not only that he used the Governor's line to dupe people in the range of millions. For the sake of our children who are being fed half information by the press. I believe Linda and the likes have the responsibility of reporting not only events but the true and details of events as it unfolds.

  121. This crime does not deserve the punishment. A lot high handed I would say. Since they are set on upholding the law, the governor should turn himself in for ....... whatever misappropriation has been done under him

    ReplyDelete
  122. If the jail sentence is carry out for stealing a fone worth 50,000,,,,,,,,,, then there should be a jail sentence of 80yrs for money laundering. May God help us all....

    ReplyDelete
  123. 45 years?????????? is that what I read or my glasses is failing?

    ReplyDelete
  124. He gets such a sentence for stealing a phone.. dont mean to judge, but if Nigerian leaders are corrupt on average, what should the Governors themselves be sentenced to ?

    ReplyDelete
  125. They should fire all the security operatives that allowed him pass through to steal the phone... Flog him please don't jail him naaaah haba

    ReplyDelete
  126. All Nigeria's have the spirit of stealing in them ... how do I know ...from all the comments made on this post ...it confirms all supports corruption and majority are part of the system.

    ReplyDelete
  127. its not 45 years naaa. they said he is serving them togeda....he has 10 years then 5years on five counts....so altogeda serves 10 years for stealing governor fne..na wa...even then for 50 k fone wen others dey still billions....even governors who steal get less

    ReplyDelete
  128. He gets 45 years over a damn phone, yet the governors and other politicians are getting away with murder. The judge is an arse hole, Im not saying the man should not be punished for stealing but 45 years is ridiculous..Thats why Nigeria is failing, lets lock people who commit minor crimes forever and let boko haram and other arse holes politicians in naija get away with murder...come on now 45 over a damn cell phone...The juge can kiss my arse.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Nonsense... foolish people

    ReplyDelete
  130. it is obvious that this guy is wrong and should serve jail time. but i would just like to know how many years all these thieves we have as politicians are going to spend in jail

    ReplyDelete
  131. 45 years, that is too much jare. I read something about it on New24 too. I need to talk to uncle Rauf. 36months is okay jare not 45years. The judge is very silly for saying that, the foolish boy himself is a thief ooo.

    ReplyDelete
  132. i would also like to say that this story sounds rather fake. it has come to my knowledge that anyone can be framed in this life so learn not to judge. any of you on here can wake up to find out that you have been accused of murder or some other crime

    ReplyDelete
  133. 45 years for a phone....what nonsense! The Nigerian judiciary is filled with criminals beacause there is no justice in this ruling not even by any stretch of the imagination....

    ReplyDelete
  134. Uhnmmmm... I wonder what we learn @ school. Its really a shame. Simple English...CONCURRENTLY...please if you do not understand this, ask someone who does.

    ReplyDelete
  139. if u think about it, for him to have been able to get that close to steal a phone he could also have been able to kill the governor.. he deserves 100 yrs sef.. all u people sitting in ur living room chairs and calling politicians rogues, come out and contest, lets vote for u and see if u would do better nah... jonathan was probably calling atiku a rogue before he got into power too...

    ReplyDelete
  140. smh, see our judicial ambition. the whole federal system in Nigeria is just a joke. phone kwa? *hiss*

    ReplyDelete
  141. All i can say is dat i dont think u can quantify the information he stole from the fone and not the cost of d fone it self

people like me keep all personal info , my wife's info, so as my kids info because my fone is d cheapest and most trust worthy PA u can get in the market.

Just imagine the things he'ld have seen there e.g. Daddy d doc found a tumor in my brain. Yet ppl r saying let him go
