Anambra Assembly votes for additional state - Orimili State

The Anambra State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, threw its weight behind the clamour for the creation of Orimili State out of the present Anambra.

Passing the motion sponsored by Hon. Tony One week Muonagor and seconded by Emeka Idu, the House urged Governor Peter Obi, National Assembly members from the state, and Anambra indigenes within and outside the country to support the demand for the new state.

Do we need more states in Nigeria? Our Naija government and their priorities. Continue reading..

"Anambra State House of Assembly hereby pledges its total support for the creation of Orimili State. We also commend the Ohaneze Ndigbo for setting up a committee headed by the traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, on the creation of Orimili state," said the Speaker of Anambra House, Chinwe Nwebili, while reading the resolution of the House on the matter.

According to Nwebili, the new state being demanded would comprise of the Ogbaru, Anambra East and West, Onitsha North and South, Idemili North and South, Dunukofia, Oyi and Ayamelum Local Government Areas of the state.

In the various contributions, the state lawmakers said there was dire need for the creation of Orimili State because it would fast-track development in the 10 Local Government Areas which, according to them, had not felt much of government’s presence.

"It is only fair that one additional state is created in the South East, particularly from Anambra State, because other states have benefited in state creation. Besides, the Igbo people are at disadvantaged position in the scheme of things and that is why we need a new state to correct the imbalance," the sponsor of the motion, Muonagor, said.

He added that the demand for the creation of the state was in pursuit of equity because the south east zone had been marginalised, and the state was qualified to be given a new state because of its population of four million people.

  20. We av nt been able to manage the states already in existence n they want to create more states. Dis" our own"," our own" mentality in nigeria is d major cause of disunity in dis country. If they are talking about development which of dem has had d nerve to bring auditors to check d states account n see if all dats been spent is commensurate to d amount of money already spent. They shuld learn from foreign countries cos when they av issues they identify n they tackle it from d root. How many times do u hear America or britain clamouring for more states? D money already givne hw adequately has it been used. We already av ebuf of mismanagement in government n creating more states is nt d solution to d problems in anambara state.

  29. In all fairness the igbos deserve and additional state to bring equity to the zone...being 5 states in the SE limits d nummber of senators they can hv to 15 as against 18 and 21 from other zones and their contribution to national isues can't be effective enough

The Niger economy is nothing compared to that of an average southern state. Size is not everything. If u know how to read and comprehend, u wuld understand that this agitation is based on equity and not infighting like the request for 10 new states in the south west.
We do not need more states but Nigeria has encouraged this. The other regions that have more states get more oil money allocations and govt representation. Let us have real fiscal federalism and autonomy and you would have almost no requests for new states. I am from one of the local govts and will always consider myself an Anambrarian whatever happens.
All in all, we are great Biafrans and God is with us.

  36. Its very sad reading the comments of people here with Linda included. I still cannot believe the ignorance amongst our people especially the young folks. What do you understand about the politics of a nation and state creation is not necessarily marginalization but a means of more revenue and development for NDIGBO. Linda, you are doing good as a young woman but endervour to educate your mind on issues going on in the world you live in. In the South East, how many states do we have as per other regions in the country and learn how that could affect Igbos. Read! my people. Read and get off FAcebbok and other social media. Educate yourselves folks!!!

  37. This local govt mentioned are the core of anambra, the river that the state was named after lies within the local govt. Other local govt should form their own orimili and live the core anambra alone

  38. So Linda you don't know about the panel that was set up a while ago during Obasanjo's tenure that decided the south eastern zone was a state less than the north, south west and other zones and the recommendation was to great a state to make all the zones equal? Try and research a topic before you publish (Though I know Nigeria does not update much info on the internet unlike other countries).

I am from Dunukofia; Ummunnachi to be precise. No doubt, the Orimili zone as the describe lacks adequate government presence and I gat mix feelings about the dividing Anambra via state creation. I do not know, but I think that the Nsukka people of Enugu state should be given priority in matters that that has to do with state division in Igbo land.
