'My husband was always beating and maltreating me' - TV presenter, Juliet Ojukwu

Juliet Ojukwu is a former Soundcity presenter, actress and model. In September 2011, Juliet met US based Chima Ojukwu and within a week, they were engaged. Less than three weeks after they met, Juliet and Chima had their introduction - on the 29th of September 2011, which was followed by a traditional wedding on Oct 4th. The white wedding was scheduled to take place in January in the US but it never held. A few months later, Juliet changed her FB status from married to single. After months of keeping mum about what really happened, Juliet gave an interview recently revealing that her marriage ended a while back after just a few months. What she said after the cut...

"We parted ways over irreconcilable differences. We were incompatible. At a point, being in the marriage became life threatening. If I was still in it, my enemy may have been dead by now, all in the name of trying to make it work and to avoid what people will say. I had to cancel the wedding in America because here in Nigeria where my family and his family are, there were verbal and domestic abuse. Going to a foreign land where I knew no one would have been worse. So, there was no need for the American wedding since it was already failing in Nigeria."
Chima's friends alleged that Juliet cancelled the wedding not because she was abused in the short-lived marriage but because she found out Chima wasn't as rich as he claimed. Juliet says the allegation is completely false.

I didn't marry him for money and I don't know where people got that perception from. Maybe because I am an attractive lady, people assume I will only date for money but that's not true. What matters to me is love. If I was going to get married because of money, I would have been married to other men far richer than Chima long ago. But I turned down a lot of offers because I wanted to love and be loved. I am comfortable with the money I make from my job, so money wasn't the deciding factor in that marriage.

Nne, thank God u took a walk rather than die in the name of 'MRS' when its obviously not working.
Women should shun abusive relationships and speak out rather than die in silence.

  4. How sensible was it to run to the altar in such a short period of meeting the guy? Was she actually hurting that bad for love?

I cant wrap my head around her stupidity. That it why it is called a marriage! You take time to know the person because you live together forever! She was clearly desperate. Not impressed.

  5. Thank God for you, it is hard to survive a verbally, emotional and physically abusive marriage. May God bless you with a kind and good man. I wish you well and thank God you were strong and bold enough to take the decision to leave.

  11. I don't mean to sound judgemental, but I don't know why my generation seem not to value patience before marriage. Why the rush these days??? It doesn't appear as though we understand that marriage is meant to be a LIFE-LONG commitment and not some contractual arrangement. I always tell all who care to listen that though love is fundamental to marital success its not the only factor needed. For instance, no matter how much you love someone, if you both ain't compatible (e.g. if he/she doesn't see your importance in achieving his/her life goals), its only a matter of time before you call it quits.

Its my earnest prayer that our youths would commit more time seeking God's face not only in their relationships but also in their entire lives, before taking any action. Believe me, it pays, both on the short and long run!

  26. sorry but i think she is lying to get sympathy, because she went after him for the money, the list of things she wanted for the white wedding was just too much, including things she wanted chima to do for her family, too expensive. And by the way by igbo tradition, juliet you are still marriedooooo, abi he drank the wine and paid your bride price, because your family has not returned the bride price and other things that was given. Please Linda learn not to just post anything on your site, please do your research and hear from both parties. She wanted a lifestyle chima couldnt provide and her reasoning that if she was in the usa that chima would abuse her physically is flawed, because if she doesnt know usa is not nigeria where men get away for it, the law here actually favors the woman in most domestic violence cases. So am sorry tell you this bleached out diva wanna be is lying through her teeth.imagine how fast she agreed to marry him just because she thought he was money bag. I beg tell another story.

How can you be engaged with someone you don't even know. I think your friends are right in saying that you wanted to marry him because you think he has money. When you found out that there is no money there you decided to breakup the engagment. Your eye too open lol! I don't know what the guy see in you self.... Go dey look for d one wey get moni. Remember time is not in your side ooo.

  69. Gold-digger like you deserve worse, how could you meet someone and just because he lives in U.S,you just jumped into a marriage with him?

    ReplyDelete
  70. U didn't marry him for money, but you did introduction three weeks after meeting him and then traditional marriage. And he is US-based. People like you do not know what love is and are just hypocrites. Now you now know what this so-called love has gotten you into. Not supporting the man anyway that is if your sotry is true. But men, you need to think carefully before making any decision. Dont do things cos others are doing it. Ojukokoro, anya-ukwu

  77. Being a person who have witnessed some of these nigerian marriages, I have to agree with Juliet and as well with Chima's friends. When a nigerian man travel to his village, he never admit that he has been in love with another he met in america, who may not be nigerian. But with pressures from his family, particularly ibo people, he succumbs to their request and marries. Unbeknownst to the woman, his heart belongs somewhere else and that can result in physical and mental abuse. Because no matter what she does, he is not in love with her.

Then on the other hand, nigerian women want to come to america. Most of the nigerian men who are earning their keep the legal way do not have sufficient cash to throw around. But when they travel to the village, with dollars being higher than naira, is party all the time, living la luca, giving the new wife a wrong image of their earning potentials. So when she gets to america, she come to realize, the bobo no get money...divorce is on the corner.

  78. She really is a gold digger, this is the answer to your post in which you asked if long term relationship was the best, how do you accept a proposal in 1 week, and married in three weeks, this is laughable and it smacks of desperation, since she is not old,age approximately 25-27yrs,then it has to be the lure of visiting the USA[bragging rights]or the perceived money she thought lover boy has, since he did abracadabra with a few dollars. The easiest way to get a naija girl, give her a few Benjamin Franklin and she looses her senses, also when coming back to the country buy discounted $20-$50 perfumes, have some cheap ladies top,and also shoes of about $25-$50,handy,and you will make love to all the so called big chicks, their naivety is so unbecoming.Let this be a lesson to others.

You say you didn't marry for money yet you got engaged to a man only after knowing him a week????? Why wouldn't he domestically abuse you when you didn't take out the time to know each other. If you were 'actually in love' with him and lets assume it was a love at first sight type situation then you will still be married to him...... right?

I consider this as 'gold digging act gone wrong'. It was only after you got married to him you discovered he wasn't as rich and you decided to get your gold digging ass self out of the marriage.

    ReplyDelete
  107. With all due respect, the lady met the guy and in a week got engaged and married in one month and she is lamenting at the abuse? Haven’t all the stories and lessons from others taught us better.
If she does not have the fear of God, she should have relied on common sense and wisdom to have studied the man first she met before embarking on a life with him. I shake my head…

  108. MY DEAR YOU DO WELL, IS BETTER YOU DID NOT GO AHEAD FOR THE WHITE WEDDING, THIS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IS GETTING TOO MUCH, I DON'T KNOW IF OUR MEN THESE DAYS ARE RIPE FOR MARRIAGE BEFORE GOING INTO IT, ANYWAY MY FELLOW WOMAN YOU HAVE YOUR LIFE TO LIVE, JUST BE VERY CAREFUL OK, LOVE YOU

  116. I dont support d idea of a man beatin a woman.... But how come women never tell d world wat dey actually did before a man decided to hit dem..... I dont think a man in his right senses will just wake up and start beatin up a woman for no reason...... No smoke without fire. Always blaming d reason for a divorce on men instead of accept ur own portion of blame for a failed marriage........ All d same... No man should hit a woman........just walk away from her sorry ass..... Danphilip

  117. She got engaged to Chima cos she thought she will be eating money anyhow, was making crazy demands and all, driving his cars and her way no even pure, lagos undercover runs girl, I know Chima and his family personally, has been in the US almost all his life and believe me when I say Yankee life really enter Chima blood, can't say a word without adding "Shit" or "F**K*, Chima was barely 29yrs when he proposed to her, how did they meet, Chima was watching sound city on cable TV in the US, saw her, liked her, contacted the producers and traced her through TV o, came back to Naija, she saw him with all the diamond studs, tattoos and blinks plus hummer jeep and different types of cars he cruises around with and Vuallaaa, she accepted to marry him! Someone you bearly even knew. Chima has a 6yr old daughter from a previous relationship with a white girl and he's engaged to be married to another lady Adaobi and she accepts Chima's daughter like her own, and undergraduate of Madona university and is really crazy about his wife to be plus they've been dating for quite some time now and his family loves and accepts the new bride unlike Juliet, what Chima needs is a good wife that will calm him down from his yankee lifestyle not the one that's after his money alone. I pray his marriage to Adaobi Okeke lasts though cos Chima is a nut case but he's really a good guy. Here are links to Chima and Adaobi facebook page

    2. Girls o. This one comot, another done jump in already. Any wife beater is scum as far as I am concerned. If someone can't make a sentence without cursing, do you need anyone to tell you which part of town he lives in America and what kind of job he does?
Next time, don't wait for a week Juliet, get married the next day k. If its true he was abusive, then its good you took to your heels which shows you are wise. So you knew exactly what u were doing when u married him so quickly and u know it wasn't because of love. No comment is better than cheap lies.

  118. hmmmm, i know a girl that got married in September and she is already out due to beatings at any slight opportunity even to flimsy reasons, are d men loosing their temper of looking for who to bully, na wa oh but seriously time will always tell that y u need to get to know each other, how u handle problems matter a lot, some divorce can be as a result of financial issue, not jst beatings, when u dont talk abt this things before marriage, u will see sugar inside the marriage.........one need to acquire wisdom and knowledge............rushing in and out of marriage isnt the best ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

"'My husband was always beating and maltreating me"..????

    ReplyDelete
  126. I dont believe her story chaa chaa.

First of all, its clear she married him for money/american dreams.

Secondly, many babes like her who already set their mind on marrying a man for visa will go thru it no matter what and then when they come over here, they will leave him and find their own way....I have seen many cases of this. If she was desperate enough to marry in less than a month for visa/money, nothing would have stopped her from atleast using him to enter US; many of them so it. I honestly thing the guy left her, not the other way around.

Thirdly, and for the record, domestic violence in the US is a major deal, and the law usually always sides with the woman, so its uncommon to see men beating us women here.

    1. He obviously came wife shopping. Which responsible and well to do man will come all the way from America to marry a girl in a week unless he has an ulterior motive which for guys frm america, is for u to come n work n pay his bills so they spend heavily to trap a nigerian girl that will come over and become his atm. Know someone that has been battered for years cos she stopped working to raise their kids. The guy will tell her point blank that he only married her to come and make money n pay off his debt in America.

  138. Oh Please! Chima is not a saint. Very cocky, americana-wannabe and arrogant bastard! I agree that he didn't respect her. Can you imagine that Chima posted of FB that he saw a pretty girl acting like she was all that in Nigeria. So he asked his driver to make sure he splashes dirty water on her just to humiliate her? Will you marry such a person?

Now to Juliet, you're one hell of a gold-digger! The chima I know is not marriageable. PERIOD! You saw the signs from the onset and you stupidly jumped in cos' of the money and cars. His parents are trying to help find a Nigerian woman to re-connect him with his roots and change his crazy lifestyle. What a waste of time! No decent Nigerian woman will marry a thug, wannabe gangsta .... That says a lot about you juliet. You're money hungry!!

  141. anon 9:41 it was a mistake, i meant CHIMA ANYASO that allegedly beat up his wife which caused their 6month VERY PUBLICIZED AND LAVISH wedding to crash.
Apparently, Onyeka(his now ex) was his long time gf till he became involved with orji uzor kalu and kalu arranged for chima and his daughter to marry for business progress. He dumped onyeka and got engaged to neya(kalu's daughter)...but neya dumped him saying she didnt wanna be used for her father's business ambition. Well, Chima went right back to onyeka and she took him back after the humiliation....less than 6 months after their marriage, it crashed. And im sure he was beating her prior to the marriage sef cos her people are claiming that after the last beating chima kicked her out (all for asking questions about his cheating). Sigh. What some women will endure sha.

Linda e delete kwana postua ooo seriously. No let me start suspecting you o.lol.

  152. Eziokwu!!!Ladies should understand that marriage is not one of those visits we pay to our boyfriends on weekends. it is forever business, so take time out to know your partner and don't rush into it bkos all your friends are married or bkos of money. Money has wings, it could fly any time. Be warned.....one day now you will tell this one that bought a car for you loves sex and you have to leave him.
